Context of Matthew 10:33
31So do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows. 32“Therefore, everyone who confesses Me before people, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before people, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. 34“Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I came to turn a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

Commentaries on Matthew 10:33
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 33Whosoever shall deny me - Whosoever prefers his worldly interest to his duty to God, sets a greater value on earthly than on heavenly things, and prefers the friendship of men to the approbation of God. Let it be remembered, that to be renounced by Christ is to have him neither for a Mediator nor Savior. To appear before the tribunal of God without having Christ for our Advocate, and, on the contrary, to have him there as our Judge, and a witness against…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-42Verses 16-42 Our Lord warned his disciples to prepare for persecution. They were to avoid all things which gave advantage to their enemies, all meddling with worldly or political concerns, all appearance of evil or selfishness, and all underhand measures. Christ foretold troubles, not only that the troubles might not be a surprise, but that they might confirm their faith. He tells them what they should suffer, and from whom. Thus Christ has dealt fairly…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-33God accepts those who publicly acknowledge Jesus in times of trial and persecution (Matthew 10:16–25). These verses describe a person’s overall way of life, not just a single confession or denial (see 7:13–27). For example, Judas sometimes acknowledged Jesus but was still condemned (26:23–24). Peter denied Jesus (see 26:69–75), but he was restored and saved.Read the comment
