Luke 23:16 in other versions
Context of Luke 23:16
14and he said to them, “You brought this Man to me on the ground that He is inciting the people to revolt; and behold, after examining Him before you, I have found no basis at all in the case of this Man for the charges which you are bringing against Him. 15No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.” 17[Now he was obligated to release to them at the feast one prisoner.] 18But they cried out all together, saying, “Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas!”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16I will therefore chastise him - The word “chastise” here means to “scourge or to whip.” This was usually done before capital punishment, to increase the sufferings of the man condemned. It is not easy to see the reason why, if Pilate supposed Jesus to be “innocent,” he should propose publicly to scourge him. It was as “really” unjust to do that as it was to crucify him. But probably he expected by this to conciliate the minds of his accusers; to show them…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-25Verses 13-25 The fear of man brings many into this snare, that they will do an unjust thing, against their consciences, rather than get into trouble. Pilate declares Jesus innocent, and has a mind to release him; yet, to please the people, he would punish him as an evil-doer. If no fault be found in him, why chastise him? Pilate yielded at length; he had not courage to go against so strong a stream. He delivered Jesus to their will, to be crucified.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-18I will punish Him: The Greek verb can mean “instruct,” “punish,” or “discipline.” It refers to a mild whipping for minor offenses. This was different from the severe flogging Romans gave before crucifixion (see Matthew 27:26; Mark 15:15).Read the comment
