Context of Revelation 6:16
14The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15Then the kings of the earth and the eminent people, and the commanders and the wealthy and the strong, and every slave and free person hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; and they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the sight of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; 17for the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

Commentaries on Revelation 6:16
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Said to the mountains and rocks - Expressions which denote the strongest perturbation and alarm. They preferred any kind of death to that which they apprehended from this most awful revolution. From the face of him that sitteth on the throne - They now saw that all these terrible judgments came from the Almighty; and that Christ, the author of Christianity, was now judging, condemning, and destroying them for their cruel persecutions of his followers.Read the comment

And, lo, there was a great earthquake - Before endeavoring to ascertain to what the sixth seal was designed to refer, it is proper, as in the previous cases, to furnish a particular explanation of the meaning of the symbols. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-17Verses 12-17 When the sixth seal was opened, there was a great earthquake. The foundations of churches and states would be terribly shaken. Such bold figurative descriptions of great changes abound in the prophecies of Scripture; for these events are emblems, and declare the end of the world and the day of judgment. Dread and terror would seize on all sorts of men. Neither grandeur, riches, valour, nor strength, can support men at that time. They would be…Read the comment

They will try to hide in a safe place, but they will not succeed (Isaiah 2:19–21; Ezekiel 38:20; Hosea 10:8; Luke 23:30). The prophets often warned that this great day would bring wrath and judgment (Isaiah 13:6–11; Joel 1:15; Amos 5:18; Zephaniah 1:14–15). The key question about God’s judgment is, who can survive? (Malachi 3:2). God’s children will be…Read the comment
