Luke 23
Darby Bible
1And the whole multitudeG4128 of them, risingG450 up, ledG71 him to PilateG4091. 2And they beganG757 to accuseG2723 him, sayingG3004, We have foundG2147 this [manG3778] perverting our nationG1484, and forbiddingG2967 to giveG1325 tribute to CaesarG2541, sayingG3004 that he himself isG1510 ChristG5547, a kingG935. 3And PilateG4091 demanded of him sayingG3004, Art thou the kingG935 of the JewsG2453? And he answeringG611 him saidG3004, Thou sayest. 4And PilateG4091 saidG3004 to the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the crowdsG3793, I findG2147 no guilt in this manG444. 5But they insisted, sayingG3004, He stirs up the peopleG2992, teachingG1321 throughout all Judaea, beginningG757 from GalileeG1056 evenG2532 on to hereG5602. 6But PilateG4091, having heardG191 Galilee [named], demanded if the manG444 wereG1510 a Galilaean; 7and having learned that he wasG1510 of Herod's jurisdiction, remitted him to HerodG2264, who himself alsoG2532 wasG1510 at JerusalemG2414 in those daysG2250. 8And when HerodG2264 sawG3708 JesusG2424 he greatlyG3029 rejoicedG5463, for he had beenG1510 a long while desirous of seeingG3708 him, because of hearingG191 manyG2425 things concerningG4012 him, and he hopedG1679 to seeG3708 some signG4592 done by him; 9and he questionedG1905 him in manyG2425 wordsG3056, but he answeredG611 him nothing. 10And the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the scribesG1122 stoodG2476 and accusedG2723 him violently. 11And HerodG2264 with his troopsG4753 having set him at nought and mockedG1702 him, having put a splendidG2986 robe upon him, sent him backG375 to PilateG4091. 12And PilateG4091 and HerodG2264 becameG1096 friendsG5384 with oneG240 another the sameG846 dayG2250, for they had beenG1510 at enmity before between themselves. 13And PilateG4091, having calledG4779 togetherG4779 the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the rulersG758 and the peopleG2992, 14saidG3004 to them, Ye have broughtG4374 to me this manG444 as turningG654 awayG654 the peopleG2992 [to rebellion], and beholdG2400, I, having examined him before you, have foundG2147 nothing criminal in this manG444 as to the thingsG3778 of which ye accuseG2723 him; 15nor HerodG2264 either, for I remitted you to him, and beholdG2400, nothing worthyG514 of deathG2288 isG1510 done by him. 16Having chastised him thereforeG3767, I will releaseG630 him. 17(Now he was obliged to release one for them at the feast.) 18But they cried out in a mass sayingG3004, AwayG142 with this [manG3778] and releaseG630 BarabbasG912 to us; 19who wasG1510 oneG5100 who, for a certainG5100 tumult which had taken placeG1096 in the cityG4172, and [for] murderG5408, had beenG1510 castG906 into prisonG5438. 20PilateG4091 therefore, desirous to releaseG630 JesusG2424, againG3825 addressed [them]. 21But they cried out in reply sayingG3004, CrucifyG4717, crucifyG4717 him. 22And he saidG3004 the thirdG5154 timeG5154 to them, What evilG2556 thenG3767 has this [manG3778] done? I have foundG2147 no cause of deathG2288 in him: I will chastise him thereforeG3767 and releaseG630 him. 23But they were urgent with loudG3173 voicesG5456, begging that he might be crucifiedG4717. And their voicesG5456 [and those of the chief priests] prevailed. 24And PilateG4091 adjudged that what they begged should take placeG1096. 25And he releasedG630 him who, for tumult and murderG5408, had been castG906 into prisonG5438, whom they begged for, and JesusG2424 he deliveredG3860 up to their will. 26And as they ledG520 him awayG520, they laidG2007 holdG1949 on a certainG5100 SimonG4613, a Cyrenian, comingG2064 from the fieldG68, and putG2007 the crossG4716 upon him to bearG5342 it behind JesusG2424. 27And a greatG4183 multitudeG4128 of the peopleG2992, and of womenG1135 who wailed and lamented him, followedG190 him. 28And JesusG2424 turningG4762 round to them saidG3004, DaughtersG2364 of JerusalemG2419, do not weepG2799 over me, but weepG2799 over yourselves and over your childrenG5043; 29for beholdG2400, daysG2250 are comingG2064 in which they will sayG3004, Blessed [are] the barrenG4723, and wombsG2836 that have not borne, and breastsG3149 that have not given suck. 30Then shall they beginG757 to sayG3004 to the mountainsG3735, FallG4098 upon us; and to the hills, CoverG2572 us: 31for if these thingsG3778 are done in the green treeG3586, what shall take placeG1096 in the dryG3584? 32NowG1161 twoG1417 othersG2087 alsoG2532, malefactors, were ledG71 with him to be put to death. 33And whenG3753 they cameG2064 to the placeG5117 which is calledG2564 SkullG2898, there they crucifiedG4717 him, and the malefactors, oneG3739 on the rightG1188 handG1188, the other on the left. 34And JesusG2424 saidG3004, FatherG3962, forgiveG863 them, for they know not what they do. And, parting out his garmentsG2440, they castG906 lotsG2819. 35And the peopleG2992 stoodG2476 beholding, and the rulersG758 alsoG2532 [with them] sneered, sayingG3004, He has savedG4982 othersG243; let him saveG4982 himself if this isG1510 the ChristG5547, the chosen one of 1GodG2316. 36And the soldiersG4757 alsoG2532 made game of him, comingG4334 up offeringG4374 him vinegar, 37and sayingG3004, If thou beG1510 the kingG935 of the JewsG2453, saveG4982 thyself. 38And there wasG1510 alsoG2532 an inscriptionG1923 [written] over him in Greek, and Roman, and Hebrew letters: This isG1510 the KingG935 of the JewsG2453. 39NowG1161 oneG1520 of the malefactors who had beenG1510 hangedG2910 spokeG3004 insultingly to him, sayingG3004, Art not thou the ChristG5547? saveG4982 thyself and us. 40But the otherG2087 answeringG611 rebukedG2008 him, saying, Dost thou too not fearG5399 2GodG2316, thou that art under the sameG846 judgmentG2917? 41and we indeed justlyG1346, for we receiveG618 the just recompense of what we have done; but this [manG3778] has done nothing amiss. 42And he saidG3004 to JesusG2424, RememberG3403 me, [Lord,] whenG3752 thou comest in thy kingdomG932. 43And Jesus saidG3004 to him, Verily I sayG3004 to thee, To-day shalt thou beG1510 with me in paradiseG3857. 44And it wasG1510 about [the] sixthG1623 hourG5610, and there cameG1096 darknessG4655 over the wholeG3650 landG1093 until [the] ninth hourG5610. 45And the sunG2246 was darkened, and the veilG2665 of the templeG3485 rent in the midstG3319. 46And JesusG2424, having cried with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, saidG3004, FatherG3962, into thy handsG5495 I commitG3908 my spiritG4151. And having saidG3004 this, he expired. 47NowG1161 the centurionG1543, seeingG3708 what took placeG1096, glorifiedG1392 3GodG2316, sayingG3004, In very deed this manG444 wasG1510 justG1342. 48And all the crowdsG3793 who had comeG1096 together to that sight, having seenG2334 the thingsG3778 that took placeG1096, returnedG5290, beatingG5180 [their] breastsG4738. 49And all those who knew him stoodG2476 afar off, the womenG1135 alsoG2532 who had followed him from GalileeG1056, beholding these thingsG3778. 50And beholdG2400, a manG435 namedG3686 JosephG2501, who was a councillor, a goodG18 manG435 and a justG1342 51(this [manG3778] had not assented to their counselG1012 and deed), of Arimathaea, a cityG4172 of the JewsG2453, who alsoG2532 waited, [himself alsoG2532,] for the kingdomG932 of 4GodG2316 52— he having gone to PilateG4091 begged the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424; 53and having taken it downG5087, wrapped it in fine linenG4616 and placedG5087 him in a tombG3418 hewn in the rock, whereG3757 no oneG3762 had ever beenG1510 laidG5087. 54And it wasG1510 preparationG3904 dayG2250, and [the] sabbathG4521 twilight wasG1510 coming on. 55And womenG1135, who had come along with him out of GalileeG1056, having followed, sawG2300 the sepulchre and howG5613 his bodyG4983 wasG1510 placedG5087. 56And having returnedG5290 they preparedG2090 aromatic spices and ointments, and remained quiet on the sabbathG4521, accordingG2596 to the commandmentG1785.
