Luke 23
American Standard Version
1And the whole company of them roseG450 up, and broughtG71 him before PilateG4091. 2And they beganG757 to accuseG2723 him, sayingG3004, We foundG2147 this manG3778 perverting our nationG1484, and forbiddingG2967 to giveG1325 tribute to Cæsar, and sayingG3004 that he himself isG1510 ChristG5547 a kingG935. 3And PilateG4091 askedG2065 him, sayingG3004, Art thou the KingG935 of the JewsG2453? And he answeredG611 him and saidG3004, Thou sayest. 4And PilateG4091 saidG3004 unto the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the multitudesG3793, I findG2147 no fault in this manG444. 5But they were the more urgent, sayingG3004, He stirreth up the peopleG2992, teachingG1321 throughout all Judæa, and beginningG757 from GalileeG1056 evenG2532 unto this place. 6But when PilateG4091 heardG191 it, he askedG1905 whether the manG444 wereG1510 a Galilæan. 7And when he knewG1921 that he wasG1510 of Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him unto HerodG2264, who himself alsoG2532 wasG1510 at JerusalemG2414 in these daysG2250.
8NowG1161 when HerodG2264 sawG3708 JesusG2424, he wasG1510 exceeding gladG5463: for he wasG1510 of a long timeG5550 desirous to seeG3708 him, because he had heardG191 concerningG4012 him; and he hopedG1679 to seeG3708 some miracle done by him. 9And he questionedG1905 him in manyG2425 wordsG3056; but he answeredG611 him nothing. 10And the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the scribesG1122 stoodG2476, vehemently accusingG2723 him. 11And HerodG2264 with his soldiers set him at nought, and mockedG1702 him, and arraying him in gorgeous apparelG2066 sent him backG375 to PilateG4091. 12And HerodG2264 and PilateG4091 becameG1096 friendsG5384 with each other that very dayG2250: for before they wereG1510 at enmity between themselves.
13And PilateG4091 calledG4779 togetherG4779 the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the rulersG758 and the peopleG2992, 14and saidG3004 unto them, Ye broughtG4374 unto me this manG444, as oneG3762 that perverteth the peopleG2992: and beholdG2400, I, having examined him before you, foundG2147 no fault in this manG444 touching those thingsG3778 whereof ye accuseG2723 him: 15no, nor yet HerodG2264: for he sent him backG375 unto us; and beholdG2400, nothing worthyG514 of deathG2288 hath beenG1510 done by him. 16I will thereforeG3767 chastise him, and releaseG630 him. 171 18But they cried out all together, sayingG3004, AwayG142 with this manG3778, and releaseG630 unto us BarabbasG912:— 19oneG5100 who for a certainG5100 insurrectionG4714 made in the cityG4172, and for murderG5408, wasG1510 castG906 into prisonG5438. 20And PilateG4091 spake unto them againG3825, desiringG2309 to releaseG630 JesusG2424; 21but they shouted, sayingG3004, CrucifyG4717, crucifyG4717 him. 22And he saidG3004 unto them the thirdG5154 timeG5154, WhyG5101, what evilG2556 hath this manG3778 done? I have foundG2147 no cause of deathG2288 in him: I will thereforeG3767 chastise him and releaseG630 him. 23But they were urgent with loudG3173 voicesG5456, askingG154 that he might be crucifiedG4717. And their voicesG5456 prevailed. 24And PilateG4091 gave sentence that what they asked for should be done. 25And he releasedG630 him that for insurrectionG4714 and murderG5408 had been castG906 into prisonG5438, whom they askedG154 for; but JesusG2424 he deliveredG3860 up to their will.
26And whenG5613 they ledG520 him awayG520, they laidG2007 holdG1949 upon oneG5100 SimonG4613 of CyreneG2956, comingG2064 from the countryG68, and laidG2007 on him the crossG4716, to bearG5342 it after JesusG2424.
27And there followedG190 him a greatG4183 multitudeG4128 of the peopleG2992, and of womenG1135 who bewailed and lamented him. 28But JesusG2424 turningG4762 unto them saidG3004, DaughtersG2364 of JerusalemG2419, weepG2799 not for me, but weepG2799 for yourselves, and for your childrenG5043. 29For beholdG2400, the daysG2250 are comingG2064, in which they shall sayG3004, Blessed are the barrenG4723, and the wombsG2836 that never bare, and the breastsG3149 that never gave suck. 30Then shall they beginG757 to sayG3004 to the mountainsG3735, FallG4098 on us; and to the hills, CoverG2572 us. 31For if they do these thingsG3778 in the green treeG3586, what shall be done in the dryG3584?
32And there were alsoG2532 twoG1417 othersG2087, malefactors, ledG71 with him to be put to death.
33And whenG3753 they cameG2064 unto the placeG5117 which is calledG2564 The skullG2898, there they crucifiedG4717 him, and the malefactors, oneG3739 on the rightG1188 handG1188 and the other on the left. 34And JesusG2424 saidG3004, FatherG3962, forgiveG863 them; for they know not what they do. And parting his garmentsG2440 among them, they castG906 lotsG2819. 35And the peopleG2992 stoodG2476 beholding. And the rulersG758 alsoG2532 scoffed at him, sayingG3004, He savedG4982 othersG243; let him saveG4982 himself, if this isG1510 the ChristG5547 of GodG2316, his chosen. 36And the soldiersG4757 alsoG2532 mockedG1702 him, comingG4334 to him, offeringG4374 him vinegar, 37and sayingG3004, If thou art the KingG935 of the JewsG2453, saveG4982 thyself. 38And there wasG1510 alsoG2532 a superscription over him, THIS ISG1510 THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453.
39And oneG1520 of the malefactors that wereG1510 hangedG2910 railed on him, sayingG3004, Art not thou the ChristG5547? saveG4982 thyself and us. 40But the otherG2087 answeredG611, and rebukingG2008 him saidG5346, Dost thou not evenG3761 fearG5399 GodG2316, seeing thou art in the sameG846 condemnationG2917? 41And we indeed justlyG1346; for we receiveG618 the due reward of our deeds: but this manG3778 hath done nothing amiss. 42And he saidG3004, JesusG2424, rememberG3403 me whenG3752 thou comest in thy kingdomG932. 43And he saidG3004 unto him, Verily I sayG3004 unto thee, To-day shalt thou beG1510 with me in ParadiseG3857.
44And it wasG1510 now about the sixthG1623 hourG5610, and a darknessG4655 cameG1096 over the wholeG3650 landG1093 until the ninth hourG5610, 45the sun’s light failing: and the veilG2665 of the templeG3485 was rent in the midstG3319. 46And JesusG2424, crying with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, saidG3004, FatherG3962, into thy handsG5495 I commend my spiritG4151: and having saidG3004 this, he gave up the ghost. 47And when the centurionG1543 sawG3708 what wasG1510 done, he glorifiedG1392 GodG2316, sayingG3004, CertainlyG3689 this wasG1510 a righteousG1342 manG444. 48And all the multitudesG3793 that cameG1096 together to this sight, when they beheld the thingsG3778 that were done, returnedG5290 smiting their breastsG4738. 49And all his acquaintance, and the womenG1135 that followed with him from GalileeG1056, stoodG2476 afar off, seeingG3708 these thingsG3778.
50And beholdG2400, a manG435 namedG3686 JosephG2501, who was a councillor, a goodG18 and righteousG1342 manG435 51(he had not consented to their counselG1012 and deed), a manG3778 of Arimathæa, a cityG4172 of the JewsG2453, who wasG1510 looking for the kingdomG932 of GodG2316: 52this manG3778 went to PilateG4091, and askedG154 for the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. 53And he took it downG5087, and wrapped it in a linenG4616 clothG4616, and laidG5087 him in a tombG3418 that wasG1510 hewn in stone, whereG3757 never man had yet lain. 54And it wasG1510 the dayG2250 of the PreparationG3904, and the sabbathG4521 drew on. 55And the womenG1135, who had come with him out of GalileeG1056, followed after, and beheld the tombG3419, and howG5613 his bodyG4983 wasG1510 laidG5087. 56And they returnedG5290, and preparedG2090 spices and ointments.
And on the sabbathG4521 they rested accordingG2596 to the commandmentG1785.
