The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus

1NowG1161 a certainG5100 manG5100 was sickG770, LazarusG2976 of 1BethanyG963, the villageG2968 of MaryG3137 and her sisterG79 2MarthaG3136. 2It was the MaryG3137 who 3anointedG218 4the LordG2962 with ointmentG3464, and wipedG1591 His feetG4228 with her hairG2359, whoseG3739 brotherG80 LazarusG2976 was sickG770. 3SoG3767 the sistersG79 sentG649 word to Him, sayingG3004, “5LordG2962, beholdG2396, 6he whomG3739 You loveG5368 is sickG770.” 4But when JesusG2424 heardG191 this, He saidG3004, “ThisG3778 sicknessG769 is not to endG4314 in deathG2288, but for 7the gloryG1391 of GodG2316, soG2443 that the SonG5207 of GodG2316 may be glorifiedG1392 by it.” 5NowG1161 JesusG2424 lovedG25 8MarthaG3136 and her sisterG79 and LazarusG2976. 6SoG3767 whenG5613 He heardG191 that he was sickG770, He thenG5119 stayedG3306 twoG1417 daysG2250 longer in the placeG5117 whereG3739 He was. 7ThenG1899 afterG3326 thisG3778 He saidG3004 to the disciplesG3101, “9Let us goG71 to JudeaG2453 againG3825.” 8The disciplesG3101 saidG3004 to Him, “10RabbiG4461, the JewsG2453 were justG3568 nowG3568 seekingG2212 11to stoneG3034 You, and are You goingG5217 thereG1563 againG3825?” 9JesusG2424 answeredG611, “12Are thereG1563 not twelveG1427 hoursG5610 in the dayG2250? IfG1437 anyoneG5100 walksG4043 in the dayG2250, he does not stumbleG4350, becauseG3754 he seesG991 the lightG5457 of thisG3778 worldG2889. 10But ifG1437 anyoneG5100 walksG4043 in the nightG3571, he stumblesG4350, becauseG3754 the lightG5457 is not in him.” 11ThisG3778 He saidG3004, and afterG3326 that He saidG3004 to them, “Our 13friendG5384 LazarusG2976 14has fallenG2837 asleepG2837; but I goG4198, soG2443 that I may awakenG1852 him out of sleepG1852.” 12The disciplesG3101 thenG3767 saidG3004 to Him, “LordG2962, ifG1487 he has fallenG2837 asleepG2837, he will 15recoverG4982.” 13NowG1161 16JesusG2424 had spokenG3004 of his deathG2288, but they thoughtG1380 that He was speakingG3004 of 17literalG2838 sleepG5258. 14SoG3767 JesusG2424 thenG3767 saidG3004 to them plainlyG3954, “LazarusG2976 is deadG599, 15and I amG5463 gladG5463 for your sakesG1223 that I was not thereG1563, soG2443 that you may believeG4100; but let us goG71 to him.” 1618ThereforeG3767 ThomasG2381, who is calledG3004 1920DidymusG1324, saidG3004 to his fellowG4827 disciplesG4827, “Let us alsoG2532 goG71, soG3767 that we may dieG599 with Him.”

17SoG3767 when JesusG2424 cameG2064, He foundG2147 that he had alreadyG2235 beenG2192 in the tombG3419 21fourG5064 daysG2250. 18NowG1161 22BethanyG963 was nearG1451 JerusalemG2414, aboutG5613 23twoG1178 milesG4712 offG575; 19and manyG4183 of 24the JewsG2453 had comeG2064 to 25MarthaG3136 and MaryG3137, 26to consoleG3888 them concerningG4012 their brotherG80. 2027MarthaG3136 thereforeG3767, whenG5613 she heardG191 that JesusG2424 was comingG2064, wentG5221 to meetG5221 Him, but 28MaryG3137 29stayedG2516 at the houseG3624. 21MarthaG3136 thenG3767 saidG3004 to JesusG2424, “30LordG2962, 31ifG1487 You had beenG1510 hereG5602, my brotherG80 would not have diedG599. 22EvenG2532 nowG3568 I knowG3609 that 32whateverG3745G302 You askG154 of GodG2316, GodG2316 will giveG1325 You.” 23JesusG2424 saidG3004 to her, “Your brotherG80 will riseG450 againG450.” 24MarthaG3136 saidG3004 to Him, “33I knowG3609 that he will riseG450 againG450 in the resurrectionG386 on the lastG2078 dayG2250.” 25JesusG2424 saidG3004 to her, “34I amG1510 the resurrectionG386 and the lifeG2222; he who believesG4100 in Me will liveG2198 evenG2579 ifG2579 he diesG599, 26and everyoneG3956 who livesG2198 and believesG4100 in Me 35will neverG3756G3361 dieG599. Do you believeG4100 thisG3778?” 27She saidG3004 to Him, “YesG3483, LordG2962; I have believedG4100 that You are 3637the ChristG5547, the SonG5207 of GodG2316, even 3839He who comesG2064 into the worldG2889.”

28When she had saidG3004 thisG3778, she 40wentG565 awayG565 and calledG5455 MaryG3137 her sisterG79, sayingG3004 secretlyG2977, “41The TeacherG1320 is hereG3918 and is callingG5455 for you.” 29And whenG5613 she heardG191 it, she gotG1453 up quicklyG5035 and was comingG2064 to Him.

30NowG1161 JesusG2424 had not yetG3768 comeG2064 into the villageG2968, but 42was stillG2089 in the placeG5117 whereG3699 MarthaG3136 metG5221 Him. 3143ThenG3767 the JewsG2453 who were with her in the houseG3614, and 44consolingG3888 her, when they sawG3708 that MaryG3137 gotG450 up quicklyG5030 and wentG1831 out, they followedG190 her, supposingG1380 that she was goingG5217 to the tombG3419 to weepG2799 thereG1563. 32ThereforeG3767, whenG5613 MaryG3137 cameG2064 whereG3699 JesusG2424 was, she sawG3708 Him, and fellG4098 at His feetG4228, sayingG3004 to Him, “45LordG2962, 46ifG1487 You had beenG1510 hereG5602, my brotherG80 would not have diedG599.” 33WhenG5613 JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 sawG3708 her weepingG2799, and 47the JewsG2453 who cameG4905 with her also weepingG2799, He 48was deeplyG1690 movedG1690 in spiritG4151 and 4950was troubledG5015, 34and saidG3004, “WhereG4226 have you laidG5087 him?” They saidG3004 to Him, “LordG2962, comeG2064 and seeG3708.” 35JesusG2424 51weptG1145. 36SoG3767 52the JewsG2453 were sayingG3004, “SeeG2396 howG4459 He 53lovedG5368 him!” 37But someG5100 of them saidG3004, “CouldG1410 not thisG3778 manG3778, who 54openedG455 the eyesG3788 of the blindG5185 manG3778, 55haveG4160 keptG4160 thisG3778 manG3778 alsoG2532 from dyingG599?”

38SoG3767 JesusG2424, againG3825 being deeplyG1690 movedG1690 withinG1722G1438, cameG2064 to the tombG3419. NowG1161 it was a 56caveG4693, and a stoneG3037 was lyingG1945 againstG1909 it. 39JesusG2424 saidG3004, “RemoveG142 the stoneG3037.” MarthaG3136, the sisterG79 of the deceasedG5053, saidG3004 to Him, “LordG2962, by thisG2235 timeG2235 57there will be a stenchG3605, for he has beenG1510 dead 58fourG5066 daysG5066.” 40JesusG2424 saidG3004 to her, “59Did I not sayG3004 to you that ifG1437 you believeG4100, you will seeG3708 the gloryG1391 of GodG2316?” 41SoG3767 they removedG142 the 60stoneG3037. ThenG1161 JesusG2424 61raisedG142 His eyesG3788, and saidG3004, “62FatherG3962, I thankG2168 You that You have heardG191 Me. 42I knewG3609 that You alwaysG3842 hearG191 Me; but 63becauseG1223 of the 64peopleG3793 standingG4026 aroundG4026 I saidG3004 it, soG2443 that they may believeG4100 that 65You sentG649 Me.” 43When He had saidG3004 theseG3778 thingsG3778, He criedG2905 out with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, “LazarusG2976, comeG1204 forthG1854.” 44The man who had diedG2348 cameG1831 forthG1831, 66boundG1210 handG5495 and footG4228 with wrappingsG2750, and 67his faceG3799 was wrappedG4019 aroundG4019 with a clothG4676. JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “UnbindG3089 him, and letG863 him goG5217.”

4568ThereforeG3767 manyG4183 of the JewsG2453 69who cameG2064 to MaryG3137, and 70sawG2300 whatG3739 He had doneG4160, believedG4100 in Him. 46But someG5100 of them wentG565 to the 71PhariseesG5330 and toldG3004 them the things whichG3739 JesusG2424 had doneG4160.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

47ThereforeG3767 72the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the PhariseesG5330 73convenedG4863 a 74councilG4892, and were sayingG3004, “WhatG5101 are we doingG4160? For thisG3778 manG444 is performingG4160 manyG4183 7576signsG4592. 48IfG1437 we letG863 Him go on likeG3779 thisG3779, allG3956 menG3956 will believeG4100 in Him, and the RomansG4514 will comeG2064 and takeG142 awayG142 bothG2532 our 77placeG5117 and our nationG1484.” 49But oneG1520 of them, 78CaiaphasG2533, 79who was highG749 priestG749 that yearG1763, saidG3004 to them, “You knowG3609 nothingG3762 at allG3762, 50norG3761 do you takeG3049 into accountG3049 that 80it is expedientG4851 for you that oneG1520 manG444 dieG599 for the peopleG2992, and that the wholeG3650 nationG1484 not perishG622.” 51NowG1161 he did not sayG3004 thisG3778 81on his ownG1438 initiativeG1438, but 82beingG1510 highG749 priestG749 that yearG1763, he prophesiedG4395 that JesusG2424 was goingG3195 to dieG599 for the nationG1484, 52and not for the nationG1484 onlyG3440, but in orderG2443 that He might alsoG2532 83gatherG4863 togetherG4863 into oneG1520 the childrenG5043 of GodG2316 who are scatteredG1287 abroadG1287. 53SoG3767 from that dayG2250 on they 84plannedG1011 togetherG1011 to killG615 Him.

54ThereforeG3767 JesusG2424 85noG3765 longerG3765 continued to walkG4043 publiclyG3954 amongG1722 the JewsG2453, but wentG565 awayG565 from thereG1564 to the countryG5561 nearG1451 the wildernessG2048, into a cityG4172 calledG3004 86EphraimG2187; and thereG2546 He stayedG3306 with the disciplesG3101.

55NowG1161 87the PassoverG3957 of the JewsG2453 was nearG1451, and manyG4183 wentG305 up to JerusalemG2414 out of the countryG5561 beforeG4253 the PassoverG3957 88to purifyG48 themselvesG1438. 56SoG3767 they 89were seekingG2212 for JesusG2424, and were sayingG3004 to oneG240 anotherG240 as they stoodG2476 in the templeG2413, “WhatG5101 do you thinkG1380; that He will not comeG2064 to the feastG1859 at allG3756G3361?” 57NowG1161 90the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the PhariseesG5330 had givenG1325 ordersG1785 that ifG1437 anyoneG5100 knewG1097 whereG4226 He was, he was to reportG3377 it, soG3704 that they might seizeG4084 Him.
