The Death and Resurrection of Lazarus
1NowG1161 a certainG5100 manG5100 was sickG770: LazarusG2976 of 1BethanyG963, the villageG2968 of MaryG3137 and her sisterG79 2MarthaG3136. 2And it was the MaryG3137 who 3anointedG218 4the LordG2962 with 5ointmentG3464, and wipedG1591 His feetG4228 with her hairG2359, whoseG3739 brotherG80 LazarusG2976 was sickG770. 3SoG3767 the sistersG79 sentG649 word to Him, sayingG3004, “6LordG2962, beholdG2396, 7he whomG3739 You loveG5368 is sickG770.” 4But when JesusG2424 heardG191 this, He saidG3004, “ThisG3778 sicknessG769 is not 8meantG4314 forG4314 deathG2288, but is for 9the gloryG1391 of GodG2316, soG2443 thatG2443 the SonG5207 of GodG2316 may beG1392 glorifiedG1392 by it.” 5(NowG1161 JesusG2424 lovedG25 10MarthaG3136 and her sisterG79, and LazarusG2976.) 6SoG3767 whenG5613 He heardG191 that he was sickG770, He thenG5119 stayedG3306 twoG1417 daysG2250 longer in the placeG5117 whereG3739 He was. 7ThenG1899 afterG3326 thisG3778 He saidG3004 to the disciplesG3101, “11Let’s goG71 to JudeaG2449 againG3825.” 8The disciplesG3101 saidG3004 to Him, “12RabbiG4461, the JewsG2453 were justG3568 nowG3568 seekingG2212 13to stoneG3034 You, and yet You are goingG5217 thereG1563 againG3825?” 9JesusG2424 repliedG611, “14Are thereG1563 not twelveG1427 hoursG5610 in the dayG2250? IfG1437 anyoneG5100 walksG4043 duringG1722 the dayG2250, he does not stumbleG4350, becauseG3754 he seesG991 the lightG5457 of thisG3778 worldG2889. 10But ifG1437 anyoneG5100 walksG4043 duringG1722 the nightG3571, he stumblesG4350, becauseG3754 the lightG5457 is not in 15him.” 11ThisG3778 He saidG3004, and afterG3326 thisG3778 He saidG3004 to them, “Our 16friendG5384 LazarusG2976 17has fallenG2837 asleepG2837; but I am goingG4198 soG2443 thatG2443 I may awakenG1852 him fromG1852 sleepG1852.” 12The disciplesG3101 thenG3767 saidG3004 to Him, “LordG2962, ifG1487 he has fallenG2837 asleepG2837, he will 18comeG4982 outG4982 ofG4982 itG4982.” 13NowG1161 19JesusG2424 had spokenG3004 of his deathG2288, but they thoughtG1380 that He was speakingG3004 aboutG4012 20actualG2838 sleepG5258. 14SoG3767 JesusG2424 thenG3767 saidG3004 to them plainlyG3954, “LazarusG2976 diedG599, 15and I amG5463 gladG5463 for your sakesG1223 that I was not thereG1563, soG2443 thatG2443 you may believeG4100; but let’s goG71 to him.” 1621ThereforeG3767 ThomasG2381, who was calledG3004 2223DidymusG1324, saidG3004 to his fellowG4827 disciplesG4827, “Let’s alsoG2532 goG71, soG2443 thatG2443 we may dieG599 with Him!”
17SoG3767 when JesusG2424 cameG2064, He foundG2147 that he had alreadyG2235 beenG2192 in the tombG3419 24fourG5064 daysG2250. 18NowG1161 25BethanyG963 was nearG1451 JerusalemG2414, aboutG5613 26fifteenG1178 stadiaG4712 awayG575; 19and manyG4183 of 27the JewsG2453 had comeG2064 to 28MarthaG3136 and MaryG3137, 29to consoleG3888 them aboutG4012 their brotherG80. 20SoG3767 thenG3767 30MarthaG3136, whenG5613 she heardG191 that JesusG2424 was comingG2064, wentG5221 toG5221 meetG5221 Him, but 31MaryG3137 32stayedG2516 in the houseG3624. 21MarthaG3136 thenG3767 saidG3004 to JesusG2424, “33LordG2962, 34ifG1487 You had beenG1510 hereG5602, my brotherG80 would not have diedG599. 22EvenG2532 nowG3568 I knowG3609 that 35whateverG3745G302 You askG154 of GodG2316, GodG2316 will giveG1325 You.” 23JesusG2424 saidG3004 to her, “Your brotherG80 will riseG450 from the dead.” 24MarthaG3136 saidG3004 to Him, “36I knowG3609 that he will riseG450 in the resurrectionG386 on the lastG2078 dayG2250.” 25JesusG2424 saidG3004 to her, “37I amG1510 the resurrectionG386 and the lifeG2222; the one who believesG4100 in Me will liveG2198, evenG2579 ifG2579 he diesG599, 26and everyoneG3956 who livesG2198 and believesG4100 in Me 38will neverG3756G3361G1519G165 dieG599. Do you believeG4100 thisG3778?” 27She saidG3004 to Him, “YesG3483, LordG2962; I have come to believeG4100 that You are 39the 40ChristG5547, the SonG5207 of GodG2316, and 4142He who comesG2064 into the worldG2889.”
28When she had saidG3004 thisG3778, she 43leftG565 and calledG5455 MaryG3137 her sisterG79, sayingG3004 secretlyG2977, “44The TeacherG1320 is hereG3918 and is callingG5455 for you.” 29And whenG5613 she heardG191 this, she gotG1453 upG1453 quicklyG5035 and cameG2064 to Him.
30NowG1161 JesusG2424 had not yetG3768 comeG2064 into the villageG2968, but 45was stillG2089 at the placeG5117 whereG3699 MarthaG3136 metG5221 Him. 3146ThenG3767 the JewsG2453 who were with her in the houseG3614 and were 47consolingG3888 her, when they sawG3708 that MaryG3137 had gottenG450 upG450 quicklyG5030 and leftG1831, they followedG190 her, thinkingG1380 that she was goingG5217 to the tombG3419 to weepG2799 thereG1563. 32SoG3767 whenG5613 MaryG3137 cameG2064 to the place whereG3699 JesusG2424 was, she sawG3708 Him and fellG4098 at His feetG4228, sayingG3004 to Him, “48LordG2962, 49ifG1487 You had beenG1510 hereG5602, my brotherG80 would not have diedG599.” 33ThereforeG3767 whenG5613 JesusG2424 sawG3708 her weepingG2799, and 50the JewsG2453 who cameG4905 with her also weepingG2799, He 51was deeplyG1690 movedG1690 in spiritG4151 and 5253was troubledG5015, 34and He saidG3004, “WhereG4226 have you laidG5087 him?” They saidG3004 to Him, “LordG2962, comeG2064 and seeG3708.” 35JesusG2424 54weptG1145. 36SoG3767 55the JewsG2453 were sayingG3004, “SeeG2396 howG4459 He 56lovedG5368 him!” 37But someG5100 of them saidG3004, “CouldG1410 thisG3778 ManG3778, who 57openedG455 the eyesG3788 of the manG5185 whoG5185 wasG5185 blindG5185, not haveG4160 alsoG2532 58keptG4160 thisG3778 manG3778 from dyingG599?”
38SoG3767 JesusG2424, againG3825 being deeplyG1690 movedG1690 withinG1722G1438, cameG2064 to the tombG3419. NowG1161 it was a 59caveG4693, and a stoneG3037 was lyingG1945 againstG1909 it. 39JesusG2424 saidG3004, “RemoveG142 the stoneG3037.” MarthaG3136, the sisterG79 of the deceasedG5053, saidG3004 to Him, “LordG2962, byG2235 thisG2235 timeG2235 60there will be a stenchG3605, for he has beenG1510 dead 61fourG5066 daysG5066.” 40JesusG2424 saidG3004 to her, “62Did I not sayG3004 to you that ifG1437 you believeG4100, you will seeG3708 the gloryG1391 of GodG2316?” 41SoG3767 they removedG142 the 63stoneG3037. And JesusG2424 64raisedG142G507 His eyesG3788, and saidG3004, “65FatherG3962, I thankG2168 You that You have heardG191 Me. 42But I knewG3609 that You alwaysG3842 hearG191 Me; neverthelessG235, 66becauseG1223 of the 67peopleG3793 standingG4026 aroundG4026 I saidG3004 it, soG2443 thatG2443 they may believeG4100 that 68You sentG649 Me.” 43And when He had saidG3004 theseG3778 thingsG3778, He criedG2905 outG2905 with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, “LazarusG2976, comeG1204 outG1854!” 44OutG1831 cameG1831 the manG2348 who had diedG2348, 69boundG1210 handG5495 and footG4228 with wrappingsG2750, and 70his faceG3799 was wrappedG4019 aroundG4019 with a clothG4676. JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “UnbindG3089 him, and letG863 him goG5217.”
4571ThereforeG3767 manyG4183 of the JewsG2453 72who cameG2064 to MaryG3137, and 73sawG2300 whatG3739 He had doneG4160, believedG4100 in Him. 46But someG5100 of them wentG565 to the 74PhariseesG5330 and toldG3004 them the things whichG3739 JesusG2424 had doneG4160.
Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
47ThereforeG3767 75the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the PhariseesG5330 76convenedG4863 a 77councilG4892 meetingG4892, and they were sayingG3004, “WhatG5101 are we 78doingG4160 inG3754 regardG3754 toG3754 theG3754 factG3754 thatG3754 thisG3778 ManG444 is performingG4160 manyG4183 7980signsG4592? 48IfG1437 we letG863 Him go on likeG3779 thisG3779, allG3956 the people will believeG4100 in Him, and the RomansG4514 will comeG2064 and takeG142 overG142 bothG2532 our 8182placeG5117 and our nationG1484.” 49But oneG1520 of them, 83CaiaphasG2533, 84who was highG749 priestG749 that yearG1763, saidG3004 to them, “You knowG3609 nothingG3762 atG3762 allG3762, 50norG3761 are you takingG3049 intoG3049 accountG3049 that 85it isG4851 inG4851 your bestG4851 interestG4851 that oneG1520 manG444 dieG599 for the peopleG2992, and that the wholeG3650 nationG1484 not perishG622 instead.” 51NowG1161 he did not sayG3004 thisG3778 86on his ownG1438, but 87as he was highG749 priestG749 that yearG1763, he prophesiedG4395 that JesusG2424 wasG3195 goingG3195 toG3195 dieG599 for the nationG1484; 52and not for the nationG1484 onlyG3440, but inG2443 orderG2443 thatG2443 He might alsoG2532 88gatherG4863 togetherG4863 into oneG1520 the childrenG5043 of GodG2316 who are scatteredG1287 abroadG1287. 53SoG3767 from that dayG2250 on they 89plannedG1011 togetherG1011 to killG615 Him.
54ThereforeG3767 JesusG2424 90noG3765 longerG3765 continued to walkG4043 publiclyG3954 amongG1722 the JewsG2453, but wentG565 awayG565 fromG1564 thereG1564 to the regionG5561 nearG1451 the wildernessG2048, into a cityG4172 calledG3004 91EphraimG2187; and thereG2546 He stayedG3306 with the disciplesG3101.
55NowG1161 92the PassoverG3957 of the JewsG2453 was nearG1451, and manyG4183 wentG305 upG305 to JerusalemG2414 from the countryG5561 priorG4253 to the PassoverG3957, 93inG2443 orderG2443 toG2443 94purifyG48 themselvesG1438. 56SoG3767 they 95were lookingG2212 forG2212 JesusG2424, and sayingG3004 to oneG240 anotherG240 as they stoodG2476 in the templeG2413 area, “WhatG5101 do you thinkG1380; that He will not comeG2064 to the feastG1859 atG3756G3361 allG3756G3361?” 57NowG1161 96the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the PhariseesG5330 had givenG1325 ordersG1785 that ifG1437 anyoneG5100 knewG1097 whereG4226 He was, he was to reportG3377 it, soG3704 thatG3704 they might arrestG4084 Him.
