Judas Betrays Jesus

1When JesusG2424 had spokenG3004 theseG3778 words, 1He wentG1831 forthG1831 with His disciplesG3101 overG4008 2the 3ravineG5493 of the KidronG2748, whereG3699 there was 4a gardenG2779, in whichG3739 He enteredG1525 5with His disciplesG3101. 2NowG1161 JudasG2455 alsoG2532, who was 6betrayingG3860 Him, knewG3609 the placeG5117, for JesusG2424 had 7oftenG4178 metG4863 thereG1563 with His disciplesG3101. 38JudasG2455 thenG3767, having receivedG2983 9the Roman 10cohortG4686 and 11officersG5257 from the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the PhariseesG5330, cameG2064 thereG1563 with lanternsG5322 and 12torchesG2985 and weaponsG3696. 4SoG3767 JesusG2424, 13knowingG3609 allG3956 the thingsG3956 that were comingG2064 upon Him, wentG1831 forthG1831 and saidG3004 to them, “14WhomG5101 do you seekG2212?” 5They answeredG611 Him, “JesusG2424 the NazareneG3480.” He saidG3004 to them, “I amG1510 He.” And JudasG2455 alsoG2532, who was betrayingG3860 Him, was standingG2476 with them. 6SoG3767 whenG5613 He saidG3004 to them, “I amG1510 He,” they drewG565 backG3694 and fellG4098 to the groundG5476. 7ThereforeG3767 He againG3825 askedG1905 them, “15WhomG5101 do you seekG2212?” And they saidG3004, “JesusG2424 the NazareneG3480.” 8JesusG2424 answeredG611, “I toldG3004 you that I amG1510 He; soG3767 ifG1487 you seekG2212 Me, letG863 theseG3778 goG5217 their wayG5217,” 9to fulfillG4137 the wordG3056 whichG3739 He spokeG3004, “16Of those whomG3739 You have givenG1325 Me I lostG622 not oneG3762.” 10SimonG4613 PeterG4074 thenG3767, 17havingG2192 a swordG3162, drewG1670 it and struckG3817 the highG749 priest’sG749 slaveG1401, and cutG609 offG609 his rightG1188 earG5621; and the slave’sG1401 nameG3686 was MalchusG3124. 11SoG3767 JesusG2424 saidG3004 to PeterG4074, “PutG906 the swordG3162 into the sheathG2336; 18the cupG4221 whichG3739 the FatherG3962 has givenG1325 Me, shall I not drinkG4095 it?”

Jesus before the Priests

1219SoG3767 20the Roman 21cohortG4686 and the 22commanderG5506 and the 23officersG5257 of the JewsG2453, arrestedG4815 JesusG2424 and boundG1210 Him, 13and ledG71 Him to 24AnnasG452 firstG4413; for he was father-in-lawG3995 of 25CaiaphasG2533, whoG3739 was highG749 priestG749 that yearG1763. 14NowG1161 CaiaphasG2533 was the one who had advisedG4823 the JewsG2453 that 26it was expedientG4851 for oneG1520 manG444 to dieG599 on behalfG5228 of the peopleG2992.

1527SimonG4613 PeterG4074 was followingG190 JesusG2424, and so was anotherG243 discipleG3101. NowG1161 that discipleG3101 was knownG1110 to the highG749 priestG749, and enteredG4897 with JesusG2424 into 28the courtG833 of the highG749 priestG749, 1629but PeterG4074 was standingG2476 at the doorG2374 outsideG1854. SoG3767 the otherG243 discipleG3101, who was knownG1110 to the highG749 priestG749, wentG1831 out and spokeG3004 to the doorkeeperG2377, and broughtG1521 PeterG4074 in. 1730ThenG3767 the slave-girlG3814 who keptG2377 the doorG2377 saidG3004 to PeterG4074, “31You are not alsoG2532 one of thisG3778 man’sG444 disciplesG3101, are you?” He saidG3004, “I amG1510 not.” 18NowG1161 the slavesG1401 and the 32officersG5257 were standingG2476 there, having madeG4160 33a charcoalG439 fireG439, for it was coldG5592 and they were 34warmingG2328 themselves; and PeterG4074 was alsoG2532 with them, standingG2476 and warmingG2328 himself.

1935The highG749 priestG749 thenG3767 questionedG2065 JesusG2424 aboutG4012 His disciplesG3101, and aboutG4012 His teachingG1322. 20JesusG2424 answeredG611 him, “I 36have spokenG2980 openlyG3954 to the worldG2889; I alwaysG3842 37taughtG1321 in 38synagoguesG4864 and 39in the templeG2413, whereG3699 allG3956 the JewsG2453 comeG4905 togetherG4905; and I spokeG2980 nothingG3762 in secretG2927. 21WhyG5101 do you questionG2065 Me? QuestionG2065 thoseG3588 who have heardG191 whatG5101 I spokeG2980 to them; they knowG3609 whatG3739 I saidG3004.” 22When He had saidG3004 thisG3778, oneG1520 of the 40officersG5257 standingG3936 nearbyG3936 41struckG1325G4475 JesusG2424, sayingG3004, “Is that the wayG3779 You answerG611 the highG749 priestG749?” 2342JesusG2424 answeredG611 him, “IfG1487 I have spokenG2980 wronglyG2560, testifyG3140 of the wrongG2556; but ifG1487 rightlyG2573, whyG5101 do you strikeG1194 Me?” 2443SoG3767 AnnasG452 sentG649 Him boundG1210 to 44CaiaphasG2533 the highG749 priestG749.

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

2545NowG1161 46SimonG4613 PeterG4074 was standingG2476 and warmingG2328 himself. SoG3767 they saidG3004 to him, “47You are not alsoG2532 one of His disciplesG3101, are you?” He deniedG720 it, and saidG3004, “I amG1510 not.” 26OneG1520 of the slavesG1401 of the highG749 priestG749, beingG1510 a relativeG4773 of the one 48whoseG3739 earG5621 PeterG4074 cutG609 offG609, saidG3004, “Did I not seeG3708 you in 49the gardenG2779 with Him?” 27PeterG4074 thenG3767 deniedG720 it againG3825, and immediatelyG2112 50a roosterG220 crowedG5455.

Jesus before Pilate

2851ThenG3767 they ledG71 JesusG2424 from 52CaiaphasG2533 into 53the 54PraetoriumG4232, and it was earlyG4404; and they themselvesG846 did not enterG1525 into 55the 56PraetoriumG4232 soG2443 that 57they would not be defiledG3392, but might eatG2068 the PassoverG3957. 2958ThereforeG3767 PilateG4091 wentG1831 out to them and saidG5346, “WhatG5101 accusationG2724 do you bringG5342 against thisG3778 ManG444?” 30They answeredG611 and saidG3004 to him, “IfG1487 thisG3778 ManG3778 were not an evildoerG2556, we would not have deliveredG3860 Him to you.” 31SoG3767 PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “TakeG2983 Him yourselvesG4771, and judgeG2919 Him accordingG2596 to your lawG3551.” The JewsG2453 saidG3004 to him, “We are not permittedG1832 to putG615 anyoneG3762 to deathG615,” 32to fulfillG4137 59the wordG3056 of JesusG2424 whichG3739 He spokeG3004, signifyingG4591 by whatG4169 kindG4169 of deathG2288 He was aboutG3195 to dieG599.

33ThereforeG3767 PilateG4091 60enteredG1525 againG3825 into the PraetoriumG4232, and summonedG5455 JesusG2424 and saidG3004 to Him, “61Are You the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” 34JesusG2424 answeredG611, “Are you sayingG3004 thisG3778 62on your ownG1438 initiativeG1438, orG2228 did othersG243 tellG3004 you aboutG4012 Me?” 35PilateG4091 answeredG611, “I amG1510 not a JewG2453, am I? Your own nationG1484 and the chiefG749 priestsG749 deliveredG3860 You to me; whatG5101 have You doneG4160?” 36JesusG2424 answeredG611, “63My kingdomG932 64is not of thisG3778 worldG2889. IfG1487 My kingdomG932 were of thisG3778 worldG2889, then My servantsG5257 would be fightingG75 soG2443 that I would not be handedG3860 over to the JewsG2453; but as it is, My kingdomG932 is not 65of thisG1782 realmG1782.” 37ThereforeG3767 PilateG4091 saidG3004 to Him, “SoG3766 You are a kingG935?” JesusG2424 answeredG611, “66You sayG3004 correctly that I amG1510 a kingG935. For thisG3778 I have been bornG1080, and for thisG3778 I have comeG2064 into the worldG2889, 67to testifyG3140 to the truthG225. 68EveryoneG3956 who is of the truthG225 hearsG191 My voiceG5456.” 38PilateG4091 saidG3004 to Him, “WhatG5101 is truthG225?”

And when he had saidG3004 thisG3778, he 69wentG1831 out againG3825 to the JewsG2453 and saidG3004 to them, “70I findG2147 noG3762 guiltG156 in Him. 3971But you have a customG4914 that I releaseG630 someoneG1520 72for you at the PassoverG3957; do you wishG1014 thenG3767 that I releaseG630 73for you the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” 40SoG3767 they criedG2905 out againG3825, sayingG3004, “74Not thisG3778 ManG3778, but BarabbasG912.” NowG1161 BarabbasG912 was a robberG3027.
