The Crown of Thorns

1PilateG4091 thenG3767 tookG2983 JesusG2424 and 12scourgedG3146 Him. 23And the soldiersG4757 twistedG4120 together a crownG4735 of thornsG173 and putG2007 it on His headG2776, and putG2007 a purpleG4210 robeG2440 on Him; 3and they began to comeG2064 up to Him and sayG3004, “4HailG5463, KingG935 of the JewsG2453!” and to 5giveG1325 Him slapsG4475 in the face. 4PilateG4091 6cameG1831 out againG3825 and saidG3004 to them, “BeholdG2396, I am bringingG71 Him out to you soG2443 that you may knowG1097 that 7I findG2147 noG3762 guiltG156 in Him.” 5JesusG2424 thenG3767 cameG1831 out, 8wearingG5409 the crownG4735 of thornsG174 and the purpleG4210 robeG2440. Pilate saidG3004 to them, “BeholdG2400, the ManG444!” 6SoG3767 whenG3753 the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the 9officersG5257 sawG3708 Him, they criedG2905 out sayingG3004, “CrucifyG4717, crucifyG4717!” PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “TakeG2983 Him yourselvesG4771 and crucifyG4717 Him, for 10I findG2147 noG3756 guiltG156 in Him.” 7The JewsG2453 answeredG611 him, “11We haveG2192 a lawG3551, and by that lawG3551 He oughtG3784 to dieG599 becauseG3754 He 12madeG4160 HimselfG1438 out to be the SonG5207 of GodG2316.”

8ThereforeG3767 whenG3753 PilateG4091 heardG191 thisG3778 statementG3056, he was even moreG3123 afraidG5399; 9and he 13enteredG1525 into the 14PraetoriumG4232 againG3825 and saidG3004 to JesusG2424, “WhereG4159 are You from?” But 15JesusG2424 gaveG1325 him noG3756 answerG612. 10SoG3767 PilateG4091 saidG3004 to Him, “You do not speakG2980 to me? Do You not knowG3609 that I haveG2192 authorityG1849 to releaseG630 You, and I haveG2192 authorityG1849 to crucifyG4717 You?” 11JesusG2424 answeredG611, “16You would haveG2192 noG3756G3762 authorityG1849 17overG2596 Me, unlessG1487G3361 it had beenG1510 givenG1325 you from aboveG509; for thisG3778 reasonG1223 18he who deliveredG3860 Me to you hasG2192 the greaterG3173 sinG266.” 12As a resultG1537 of thisG3778 PilateG4091 19madeG2212 effortsG2212 to releaseG630 Him, but the JewsG2453 criedG2905 out sayingG3004, “20IfG1437 you releaseG630 thisG3778 ManG3778, you are noG3756 friendG5384 of CaesarG2541; everyoneG3956 who makesG4160 himselfG1438 out to be a kingG935 21opposesG483 CaesarG2541.”

13ThereforeG3767 when PilateG4091 heardG191 theseG3778 wordsG3056, he broughtG71 JesusG2424 out, and 22satG2523 downG2523 on the judgmentG968 seatG968 at a placeG5117 calledG3004 23The PavementG3038, but 24in 25HebrewG1447, GabbathaG1042. 14NowG1161 it was 26the dayG3904 of preparationG3904 for the PassoverG3957; it was aboutG5613 the 2728sixthG1623 hourG5610. And he saidG3004 to the JewsG2453, “BeholdG2396, 29your KingG935!” 15SoG3767 they criedG2905 out, “30AwayG142 with Him, awayG142 with Him, crucifyG4717 Him!” PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “Shall I crucifyG4717 your KingG935?” The chiefG749 priestsG749 answeredG611, “We haveG2192 noG3756 kingG935 but CaesarG2541.”

The Crucifixion

16SoG3767 he thenG5119 31handedG3860 Him over to them to be crucifiedG4717.

1732They tookG3880 JesusG2424, thereforeG3767, and He wentG1831 out, 3334bearingG941 His ownG1438 crossG4716, to the place calledG3004 35the PlaceG5117 of a SkullG2898, whichG3739 is calledG3004 36in 37HebrewG1447, GolgothaG1115. 18ThereG3699 they crucifiedG4717 Him, and with Him 38twoG1417 otherG243 menG243, one on eitherG1782 sideG1782, and JesusG2424 in betweenG3319. 19PilateG4091 alsoG2532 wroteG1125 an inscriptionG5102 and putG5087 it on the crossG4716. It was writtenG1125, “39JESUSG2424 THE NAZARENEG3480, 40THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453.” 20ThereforeG3767 manyG4183 of the JewsG2453 readG314 thisG3778 inscriptionG5102, for the placeG5117 whereG3699 JesusG2424 was crucifiedG4717 was nearG1451 the cityG4172; and it was writtenG1125 41in 42HebrewG1447, LatinG4515 and in GreekG1676. 21SoG3767 the chiefG749 priestsG749 of the JewsG2453 were sayingG3004 to PilateG4091, “Do not writeG1125, ‘43The KingG935 of the JewsG2453’; but that He saidG3004, ‘I amG1510 44KingG935 of the JewsG2453.’” 22PilateG4091 answeredG611, “45WhatG3739 I have writtenG1125 I have writtenG1125.”

23ThenG3767 46the soldiersG4757, whenG3753 they had crucifiedG4717 JesusG2424, tookG2983 His outerG2440 garmentsG2440 and madeG4160 47fourG5064 partsG3313, a partG3313 to everyG1538 soldierG4757 and also the 48tunicG5509; nowG1161 the tunicG5509 was seamlessG690, wovenG5307 49in oneG3650 pieceG3650. 24SoG3767 they saidG3004 to oneG240 anotherG240, “50Let us not tearG4977 it, but castG2975 lotsG2975 for it, to decide whoseG5101 it shall be”; 51this was to fulfillG4137 the ScriptureG1124: “They 52dividedG1266 My outerG2440 garmentsG2440 amongG1266 them, and for My clothingG2441 they castG906 53lotsG2819.” 25ThereforeG3767 the soldiersG4757 didG4160 theseG3778 thingsG3778.

54But standingG2476 by the crossG4716 of JesusG2424 were 55His motherG3384, and His mother’sG3384 sisterG79, MaryG3137 the wife of ClopasG2832, and 56MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094. 26When JesusG2424 thenG3767 sawG3708 His motherG3384, and 57the discipleG3101 whomG3739 He lovedG25 standingG3936 nearbyG3936, He saidG3004 to His motherG3384, “58WomanG1135, beholdG2396, your sonG5207!” 27ThenG1534 He saidG3004 to the discipleG3101, “BeholdG2396, your motherG3384!” From that hourG5610 the discipleG3101 tookG2983 her into 59his ownG2398 household.

28AfterG3326 thisG3778, JesusG2424, 60knowingG3609 that allG3956 thingsG3956 had alreadyG2235 been accomplishedG5055, 61to fulfillG5048 the ScriptureG1124, saidG3004, “62I amG1372 thirstyG1372.” 29A jarG4632 fullG3324 of sourG3690 wineG3690 was standingG2749 there; soG3767 63they putG4060 a spongeG4699 fullG3324 of the sourG3690 wineG3690 upon a branch of hyssopG5301 and broughtG4374 it up to His mouthG4750. 30ThereforeG3767 whenG3753 JesusG2424 had receivedG2983 the sourG3690 wineG3690, He saidG3004, “64It is finishedG5055!” And He bowedG2827 His headG2776 and 65gaveG3860 up His spiritG4151.

Care of the Body of Jesus

31ThenG3767 the JewsG2453, becauseG1893 it was 66the dayG3904 of preparationG3904, soG2443 that 67the bodiesG4983 would not remainG3306 on the crossG4716 on the SabbathG4521 (68for that SabbathG4521 was a 69highG3173 dayG3904), askedG2065 PilateG4091 that their legsG4628 might be brokenG2608, and that they might be takenG142 awayG142. 32SoG3767 the soldiersG4757 cameG2064, and brokeG2608 the legsG4628 of the firstG4413 manG4413 and of the otherG243 who was 70crucifiedG4957 with Him; 33but comingG2064 to JesusG2424, whenG5613 they sawG3708 that He was alreadyG2235 deadG2348, they did not breakG2608 His legsG4628. 34But oneG1520 of the soldiersG4757 piercedG3572 His sideG4125 with a spearG3057, and immediatelyG2117 71bloodG129 and waterG5204 cameG1831 out. 35And he who has seenG3708 has 72testifiedG3140, and his testimonyG3140 is trueG228; and he knowsG3609 that he is tellingG3004 the truthG227, soG2443 that you alsoG2532 may believeG4100. 36For theseG3778 thingsG3778 cameG1096 to passG1096 73to fulfillG4137 the ScriptureG1124, “74Not a boneG3747 of Him shall be 75brokenG4937.” 37And againG3825 anotherG2087 ScriptureG1124 saysG3004, “76They shall lookG3708 on Him whomG3739 they piercedG1574.”

3877AfterG3326 theseG3778 thingsG3778 JosephG2501 of ArimatheaG707, beingG1510 a discipleG3101 of JesusG2424, but a 78secretG2928 one for 79fearG5401 of the JewsG2453, askedG2065 PilateG4091 that he might takeG142 awayG142 the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424; and PilateG4091 grantedG2010 permissionG2010. SoG3767 he cameG2064 and tookG142 awayG142 His bodyG4983. 3980NicodemusG3530, who had firstG4413 comeG2064 to Him by nightG3571, alsoG2532 cameG2064, 81bringingG5342 a 82mixtureG3395 of 83myrrhG4666 and aloesG250, aboutG5613 a 84hundredG1540 85poundsG3046 weight. 40SoG3767 they tookG2983 the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424 and 86boundG1210 it in 87linenG3608 wrappingsG3608 with the spicesG759, as is the burialG1779 customG1485 of the JewsG2453. 41NowG1161 in the placeG5117 whereG3699 He was crucifiedG4717 there was a gardenG2779, and in the gardenG2779 a 88newG2537 tombG3419 89in whichG3739 noG3762 oneG3762 had yetG3764 beenG1510 laidG5087. 42ThereforeG3767 becauseG1223 of the JewishG2453 dayG3904 of 90preparationG3904, sinceG3754 the tombG3419 was 91nearbyG1451, they laidG5087 JesusG2424 thereG1563.
