First Missionary Journey

1NowG1161 there were at 1AntiochG490, in the 2churchG1577 that was there, 3prophetsG4396 and 4teachersG1320: 5BarnabasG921, and SimeonG4826 who was calledG2564 NigerG3526, and LuciusG3066 of 6CyreneG2956, and ManaenG3127 who had been broughtG4939 up with 7HerodG2264 the tetrarchG5068, and SaulG4569. 2While they were ministeringG3008 to the LordG2962 and fastingG3522, 8the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 saidG3004, “SetG873 apartG873 for Me 9BarnabasG921 and SaulG4569 for 10the workG2041 to whichG3739 I have calledG4341 them.” 3ThenG5119, when they had fastedG3522 and 11prayedG4336 and 12laidG2007 their handsG5495 on them, 13they sentG630 them awayG630.

4SoG3767, being 14sentG1599 out by the HolyG40 SpiritG4151, they wentG2718 downG2718 to SeleuciaG4581 and from thereG1564 they sailedG636 to 15CyprusG2954. 5When they reachedG1096 SalamisG4529, they began to proclaimG2605 the wordG3056 of GodG2316 in 16the synagoguesG4864 of the JewsG2453; and they alsoG2532 hadG2192 17JohnG2491 as their helperG5257. 6When they had goneG1330 throughG1330 the wholeG3650 islandG3520 as farG891 as PaphosG3974, they foundG2147 a 18magicianG3097, a JewishG2453 19falseG5578 prophetG5578 whoseG3739 nameG3686 was Bar-JesusG919, 7whoG3739 was with the 20proconsulG446, SergiusG4588 PaulusG3972, a manG435 of intelligenceG4908. ThisG3778 manG3778 summonedG4341 BarnabasG921 and SaulG4569 and soughtG1934 to hearG191 the wordG3056 of GodG2316. 8But ElymasG1681 the 21magicianG3097 (for soG3779 his nameG3686 is translatedG3177) was opposingG436 them, seekingG2212 to turnG1294 the 22proconsulG446 awayG1294 from 23the faithG4102. 9But SaulG4569, whoG3588 was alsoG2532 known as PaulG3972, 2425filledG4092 with the HolyG40 SpiritG4151, fixedG816 his gazeG816 on him, 10and saidG3004, “You who are fullG4134 of allG3956 deceitG1388 and fraudG4468, you 26sonG5207 of the devilG1228, you enemyG2190 of allG3956 righteousnessG1343, will you not ceaseG3973 to makeG1294 crookedG1294 27the straightG2117 waysG3598 of the LordG2962? 11NowG3568, beholdG2400, 28the handG5495 of the LordG2962 is upon you, and you will be blindG5185 and not seeG991 the sunG2246 for a timeG2540.” And immediatelyG3916 a mistG887 and a darknessG4655 fellG4098 upon him, and he wentG4013 aboutG4013 seekingG2212 those whoG5497 would leadG5497 him by the handG5497. 12ThenG5119 the 29proconsulG446 believedG4100 when he sawG3708 what had happenedG1096, being amazedG1605 at 30the teachingG1322 of the LordG2962.

13NowG1161 PaulG3972 and his companionsG3588G4012 putG321 out to seaG321 from 31PaphosG3974 and cameG2064 to 32PergaG4011 in 33PamphyliaG3828; but 34JohnG2491 leftG672 them and returnedG5290 to JerusalemG2414. 14But goingG1330 on from PergaG4011, they arrivedG3854 at 35PisidianG4099 36AntiochG490, and on 37the SabbathG4521 dayG2250 they wentG2064 into 38the synagogueG4864 and satG2523 downG2523. 15AfterG3326 39the readingG320 of the LawG3551 and 40the ProphetsG4396 41the synagogueG752 officialsG752 sentG649 to them, sayingG3004, “BrethrenG435G80, ifG1487 you have anyG5100 wordG3056 of exhortationG3874 for the peopleG2992, sayG3004 it.” 16PaulG3972 stoodG450 up, and 42motioningG2678 with his handG5495 saidG3004,

“MenG435 of IsraelG2475, and 43you who fearG5399 GodG2316, listenG191: 17The GodG2316 of thisG3778 peopleG2992 IsraelG2274 44choseG1586 our fathersG3962 and 4546madeG5312 the peopleG2992 greatG5312 duringG1722 their stayG3940 in the landG1093 of EgyptG125, and with an upliftedG5308 armG1023 47He ledG1806 them out from it. 18For 48a periodG5550 of aboutG5613 fortyG5066 yearsG5066 49He putG5159 up with them in the wildernessG2048. 1950When He had destroyedG2507 51sevenG2033 nationsG1484 in the landG1093 of CanaanG5477, He 52distributedG2624 their landG1093 as an inheritanceG2624--all of which took 53aboutG5613 fourG5071 hundredG5071 and fiftyG4004 yearsG2094. 20AfterG3326 theseG3778 thingsG3778 He 54gaveG1325 them judgesG2923 untilG2193 55SamuelG4545 the prophetG4396. 21ThenG2532 they 56askedG154 for a kingG935, and GodG2316 gaveG1325 them 57SaulG4549 the sonG5207 of KishG2797, a manG435 of the tribeG5443 of BenjaminG958, for fortyG5065 yearsG2094. 22AfterG2596 He had 58removedG3179 him, He raisedG1453 up DavidG1160 to be their kingG935, concerning whomG3739 He alsoG2532 testifiedG3140 and saidG3004, ‘59I have foundG2147 DavidG1160 the son of JesseG2421, a manG435 afterG2596 My heartG2588, whoG3739 will doG4160 allG3956 My 60willG2307.’ 2361From the descendantsG4690 of thisG3778 manG3778, 62accordingG2596 to promiseG1860, GodG2316 has broughtG71 to IsraelG2274 63a SaviorG4990, JesusG2424, 24after 64JohnG2491 had proclaimedG4296 beforeG4253 65His comingG4383G1529 a 66baptismG908 of repentanceG3341 to allG3956 the peopleG2992 of IsraelG2274. 25And whileG5613 JohnG2491 67was completingG4137 his courseG1408, 68he kept sayingG3004, ‘WhatG5101 do you supposeG5282 that I amG1510? I amG1510 not He. But beholdG2400, one is comingG2064 afterG3326 me the sandalsG5266 of whoseG3739 feetG4228 I amG1510 not worthyG514 to untieG3089.’

26“BrethrenG435G80, sonsG5207 of Abraham’sG11 familyG1085, and thoseG3588 amongG1722 you who fearG5399 GodG2316, to us the messageG3056 of 69thisG3778 salvationG4991 has been sentG1821. 27For thoseG3588 who liveG2730 in JerusalemG2419, and their 70rulersG758, 71recognizingG50 neither Him norG2532 the 72utterancesG5456 of 73the prophetsG4396 which are 74readG314 everyG3956 SabbathG4521, fulfilledG4137 these by condemningG2919 Him. 28And though they foundG2147 noG3367 groundG156 for putting Him to death, they 75askedG154 PilateG4091 that He be 76executedG337. 29WhenG5613 they had 77carriedG5055 out allG3956 that was writtenG1125 concerningG4012 Him, 78they tookG2507 Him downG2507 from 79the 80crossG3586 and 81laidG5087 Him in a tombG3419. 30But GodG2316 82raisedG1453 Him from the deadG3498; 31and for manyG4183 daysG2250 83He appearedG3708 to thoseG3588 who cameG4872 up with Him from GalileeG1056 to JerusalemG2419, the very onesG3748 whoG3748 are nowG3568 84His witnessesG3144 to the peopleG2992. 32And we 85preachG2097 to you the goodG2097 newsG2097 of 86the promiseG1860 madeG1096 to the fathersG3962, 33that GodG2316 has fulfilledG1603 thisG3778 promise 87to our childrenG5043 in that He 88raisedG450 up JesusG2424, as it is alsoG2532 writtenG1125 in the secondG1208 PsalmG5568, ‘89You are My SonG5207; todayG4594 I have begottenG1080 You.’ 34As for the fact that He 90raisedG450 Him up from the deadG3498, noG3371 longerG3371 to returnG5290 to decayG1312, He has spokenG3004 in thisG3779 wayG3779: ‘91I will giveG1325 you the holyG3741 and 92sureG4103 blessings of DavidG1160.’ 35ThereforeG1360 He alsoG2532 saysG3004 in anotherG2087 Psalm, ‘93You will not 94allowG1325 Your 95HolyG3741 OneG3741 to 96undergoG3708 decayG1312.’ 36For 97DavidG1160, after he had 98servedG5256 99the purposeG1012 of GodG2316 in his ownG2398 generationG1074, 100fellG2837 asleepG2837, and was laidG4369 amongG4314 his fathersG3962 and 101underwentG3708 decayG1312; 37but He whomG3739 GodG2316 102raisedG1453 did not 103undergoG3708 decayG1312. 38ThereforeG3767 let it be knownG1110 to you, brethrenG435G80, that 104throughG1223 105Him forgivenessG859 of sinsG266 is proclaimedG2605 to you, 39and 106throughG1722 Him 107everyoneG3956 who believesG4100 is 108freedG1344 109from allG3956 thingsG3956, from whichG3739 you couldG1410 not be 110freedG1344 111throughG1722 the LawG3551 of MosesG3475. 40ThereforeG3767 takeG991 heedG991, soG3361 that the thingG3004 spokenG3004 of 112in the ProphetsG4396 may not comeG1904 upon you:41‘113BeholdG3708, you scoffersG2707, and marvelG2296, and 114perishG853; For I am accomplishingG2038 a workG2041 in your daysG2250, A workG2041 whichG3739 you will neverG3756G3361 believeG4100, thoughG1437 someoneG5100 should describeG1555 it to you.’”

42As 115Paul and Barnabas were goingG1826 out, the people kept beggingG3870 that theseG3778 116thingsG4487 might be spokenG2980 to them the nextG3342 117SabbathG4521. 43NowG1161 when the meeting of the synagogueG4864 had brokenG3089 up, manyG4183 of the JewsG2453 and of the 118God-fearingG4576 119120proselytesG4339 followedG190 PaulG3972 and BarnabasG921, whoG3748, speakingG4354 to them, were urgingG3982 them to continueG4357 in 121the graceG5485 of GodG2316.

Paul Turns to the Gentiles

44The nextG2064 122SabbathG4521 nearlyG4975 the wholeG3956 cityG4172 assembledG4863 to hearG191 the wordG3056 of 123the LordG2316. 45But when 124the JewsG2453 sawG3708 the crowdsG3793, they were filledG4092 with jealousyG2205 and began contradictingG483 the thingsG2980 spokenG2980 by PaulG3972, and were 125blasphemingG987. 46PaulG3972 and BarnabasG921 spokeG3955 out boldlyG3955 and saidG3004, “It was necessaryG316 that the wordG3056 of GodG2316 be spokenG2980 to you 126firstG4413; sinceG1894 you repudiateG683 it and judgeG2919 yourselvesG1438 unworthyG3756G514 of eternalG166 lifeG2222, beholdG2400, 127we are turningG4762 to the GentilesG1484. 47For soG3779 the LordG2962 has commandedG1781 us, ‘128I have placedG5087 You as a 129lightG5457 for the GentilesG1484, That You may 130bringG1510G1519 salvationG4991 to the endG2078 of the earthG1093.’”

48When the GentilesG1484 heardG191 this, they began rejoicingG5463 and glorifyingG1392 131the wordG3056 of 132the LordG2962; and as manyG3745 as 133had beenG1510 appointedG5021 to eternalG166 lifeG2222 believedG4100. 49And 134the wordG3056 of the LordG2962 was being spreadG1308 throughG1223 the wholeG3650 regionG5561. 50But 135the JewsG2453 incitedG3951 the 136137devoutG4576 womenG1135 138of prominenceG2158 and the leadingG4413 menG4413 of the cityG4172, and instigatedG1892 a persecutionG1375 againstG1909 PaulG3972 and BarnabasG921, and droveG1544 them out of their 139districtG3725. 51But 140they shookG1621 offG1621 the dustG2868 of their feetG4228 in protest againstG1909 them and wentG2064 to 141IconiumG2430. 52And the disciplesG3101 were continually 142filledG4137 with joyG5479 and with the HolyG40 SpiritG4151.
