Fate of Ananias and Sapphira

1But a manG435 namedG3686 AnaniasG367, with his wifeG1135 SapphiraG4551, soldG4453 a pieceG2933 of propertyG2933, 2and 1keptG3557 backG3557 some of the priceG5092 for himself, with his wife’sG1135 2fullG4924 knowledgeG4924, and bringingG5342 a portionG3313 of it, he 3laidG5087 it at the apostles’G652 feetG4228. 3But PeterG4074 saidG3004, “AnaniasG367, whyG1223G5101 has 4SatanG4567 filledG4137 your heartG2588 to lieG5574 5to the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 and to 6keepG3557 backG3557 some of the priceG5092 of the landG5564? 4While it remainedG3306 unsold, did it not remainG3306 your own? And after it was soldG4097, was it not 7underG1722 your controlG1849? WhyG5101 is it that you have 8conceivedG5087 thisG3778 deedG4229 in your heartG2588? You have not liedG5574 to menG444 but 9to GodG2316.” 5And as he heardG191 theseG3778 wordsG3056, AnaniasG367 10fellG4098 downG4098 and breathedG1634 his lastG1634; and 11greatG3173 fearG5401 cameG1096 overG1909 allG3956 who heardG191 of it. 6The youngG3501 menG3501 gotG450 up and 12coveredG4958 him up, and after carryingG1627 him out, they buriedG2290 him.

7NowG1161 there elapsedG1096 an intervalG1292 of aboutG5613 threeG5140 hoursG5610, and his wifeG1135 cameG1525 in, not knowingG3609 what had happenedG1096. 8And PeterG4074 respondedG611 to her, “TellG3004 me whetherG1487 you soldG591 the landG5564 1314for suchG5118 and suchG5118 a priceG5118?” And she saidG3004, “YesG3483, 15that was the priceG5118.” 9ThenG1161 PeterG4074 said to her, “WhyG5101 is it that you have agreedG4856 togetherG4856 to 16putG3985 17the SpiritG4151 of the LordG2962 to the testG3985? BeholdG2400, the feetG4228 of thoseG3588 who have buriedG2290 your husbandG435 are at the doorG2374, and they will carryG1627 you out as well.” 10And immediatelyG3916 she 18fellG4098 at his feetG4228 and breathedG1634 her lastG1634, and the youngG3495 menG3495 cameG1525 in and foundG2147 her deadG3498, and they carriedG1627 her out and buriedG2290 her besideG4314 her husbandG435. 11And 19greatG3173 fearG5401 cameG1096 overG1909 the wholeG3650 churchG1577, and overG1909 allG3956 who heardG191 of theseG3778 thingsG3778.

1220At the handsG5495 of the apostlesG652 manyG4183 21signsG4592 and wondersG5059 were takingG1096 placeG1096 amongG1722 the peopleG2992; and they were allG3956 with oneG3661 accordG3661 in 22Solomon’sG4672 porticoG4745. 13But noneG3762 of the restG3062 daredG5111 to associateG2853 with them; howeverG235, 23the peopleG2992 heldG3170 them in highG3170 esteemG3170. 14And allG3123 the moreG3123 24believersG4100 in the LordG2962, multitudesG4128 of menG435 and womenG1135, were constantly 25addedG4369 to their number, 15to suchG5620 an extentG5620 that they evenG2532 carriedG1627 the sickG772 out into the streetsG4116 and laidG5087 them on cotsG2825 and palletsG2895, soG2443 that when PeterG4074 cameG2064 by 26at leastG2579 his shadowG4639 might fallG1982 on anyG5100 oneG5100 of them. 16AlsoG2532 the 27peopleG4128 from the citiesG4172 in the vicinityG4038 of JerusalemG2419 were comingG4905 togetherG4905, bringingG5342 people who were sickG772 28orG2532 afflictedG3791 with uncleanG169 spiritsG4151, and they were allG537 being healedG2323.

Imprisonment and Release

17But the highG749 priestG749 roseG450 up, alongG2532 with allG3956 his associatesG4862 (that is 29the sectG139 of 30the SadduceesG4523), and they were filledG4092 with jealousyG2205. 18They laidG1911 handsG5495 on the apostlesG652 and 31putG5087 them in a publicG1219 jailG5084. 19But duringG1223 the nightG3571 32an angelG32 of the LordG2962 openedG455 the gatesG2374 of the prisonG5438, and takingG1806 them out he saidG3004, 20“GoG4198, standG2476 and 33speakG2980 to the peopleG2992 in the templeG2413 3435the wholeG3956 messageG4487 of thisG3778 LifeG2222.” 21Upon hearingG191 this, they enteredG1525 into the templeG2413 36aboutG5259 daybreakG3722 and began to teachG1321.

NowG1161 when 37the highG749 priestG749 and his associatesG4862 cameG1525, they calledG4779 38the 39CouncilG4892 togetherG4779, evenG2532 allG3956 the SenateG1087 of the sonsG5207 of IsraelG2274, and sentG649 orders to the prisonG1201 houseG1201 for them to be broughtG71. 22But 40the officersG5257 who cameG3854 did not findG2147 them in the prisonG5438; and they returnedG390 and reportedG518 back, 23sayingG3004, “We foundG2147 the prisonG1201 houseG1201 lockedG2808 quiteG3956 securelyG803 and the guardsG5441 standingG2476 at the doorsG2374; but when we had openedG455 up, we foundG2147 noG3762 oneG3762 insideG2080.” 24NowG1161 whenG5613 41the captainG4755 of the templeG2413 guard and the chiefG749 priestsG749 heardG191 theseG3778 wordsG3056, they were greatlyG1280 perplexedG1280 aboutG4012 them as to whatG5101 42would comeG1096 of thisG3778. 25But someoneG5100 cameG3854 and reportedG518 to them, “The menG435 whomG3739 you putG5087 in prisonG5438 are standingG2476 in the templeG2413 and teachingG1321 the peopleG2992!” 26ThenG5119 43the captainG4755 wentG565 alongG565 with 44the officersG5257 and proceeded to bringG71 them back withoutG3756G3326 violenceG970 (for 45they were afraidG5399 of the peopleG2992, that they might be stonedG3034).

27When they had broughtG71 them, they stoodG2476 them 46beforeG1722 47the CouncilG4892. The highG749 priestG749 questionedG1905 them, 28sayingG3004, “We gaveG3853 you 48strictG3852 ordersG3852 not to continue teachingG1321 in thisG3778 nameG3686, and 49yetG2400, you have filledG4137 JerusalemG2419 with your teachingG1322 and 50intendG1014 to bringG1863 thisG3778 man’sG444 bloodG129 upon us.” 29But PeterG4074 and the apostlesG652 answeredG611, “51We mustG1163 obeyG3980 GodG2316 ratherG3123 thanG2228 menG444. 3052The GodG2316 of our fathersG3962 53raisedG1453 up JesusG2424, 54whomG3739 you had 55putG1315 to deathG1315 by hangingG2910 Him on a 56crossG3586. 3157He is the one whom GodG2316 exaltedG5312 58to His rightG1188 handG1188 as a 5960PrinceG747 and a 61SaviorG4990, to grantG1325 62repentanceG3341 to IsraelG2274, and forgivenessG859 of sinsG266. 32And we are 63witnessesG3144 64of theseG3778 thingsG4487; and 65so is the HolyG40 SpiritG4151, whomG3739 GodG2316 has givenG1325 to thoseG3588 who obeyG3980 Him.”

Gamaliel’s Counsel

33But when they heardG191 this, they were 66cutG1282 67to the quickG1282 and intendedG1014 to killG337 them. 34But a PhariseeG5330 namedG3686 68GamalielG1059, a 69teacherG3547 of the LawG3547, respectedG5093 by allG3956 the peopleG2992, stoodG450 up in 70the CouncilG4892 and gaveG2753 ordersG2753 to putG4160 the menG444 outsideG1854 for a shortG1024 timeG1024. 35And he saidG3004 to them, “MenG435 of IsraelG2475, takeG4337 careG4337 whatG5101 you proposeG3195 to doG4238 with theseG3778 menG444. 36For someG3778 timeG2250 agoG4253 TheudasG2333 roseG450 up, 71claimingG3004 to be somebodyG5100, and a groupG706 of aboutG5613 fourG5071 hundredG5071 menG435 joinedG4346 up with him. 72But he was killedG337, and allG3956 whoG3745 73followedG3982 him were dispersedG1262 and cameG1096 to nothingG3762. 37AfterG3326 thisG3778 manG3778, JudasG2455 of GalileeG1057 roseG450 up in the daysG2250 of 74the censusG582 and drewG868 awayG868 some peopleG2992 afterG3694 him; he tooG2548 perishedG622, and allG3956 those whoG3745 75followedG3982 him were scatteredG1287. 38SoG2532 in the presentG3568 caseG3568, I sayG3004 to you, stayG868 awayG868 from theseG3778 menG444 and letG863 them aloneG863, for ifG1437 thisG3778 planG1012 orG2228 76actionG2041 77is of menG444, it will be overthrownG2647; 39but ifG1487 it is of GodG2316, you will not be ableG1410 to overthrowG2647 them; orG3379 elseG3379 you may evenG2532 be foundG2147 78fightingG2314 againstG2314 GodG2314.”

40They 79tookG3982 his adviceG3982; and after callingG4341 the apostlesG652 in, they 80floggedG1194 them and orderedG3853 them not to 81speakG2980 in the nameG3686 of JesusG2424, and then releasedG630 them. 41SoG3767 they wentG4198 on their wayG4198 from the presenceG4383 of the 8283CouncilG4892, 84rejoicingG5463 that they had been consideredG2661 worthyG2661 to sufferG718 shameG818 85for His nameG3686. 4286And everyG3956 dayG2250, in the templeG2413 and 87from houseG3624 to houseG3624, they 88keptG3756G3973 rightG3756G3973 on teachingG1321 and 8990preachingG2097 JesusG2424 as the 91ChristG5547.
