Paul Is Sent to Rome
1WhenG5613 it was decidedG2919 that 1we 2would sailG636 for 3ItalyG2482, they proceeded to deliverG3860 PaulG3972 and someG5100 otherG2087 prisonersG1202 to a centurionG1543 of the AugustanG4575 45cohortG4686 namedG3686 JuliusG2457. 2And embarkingG1910 in an AdramyttianG98 shipG4143, which was aboutG3195 to sailG4126 to the regionsG5117 alongG2596 the coastG2596 of 67AsiaG773, we putG321 out to seaG321 accompaniedG1510G4862 by 8AristarchusG708, a 9MacedonianG3110 of 10ThessalonicaG2331. 3The nextG2087 day we putG2609 in at 11SidonG4605; and JuliusG2457 12treatedG5530 PaulG3972 with considerationG5364 and 13allowedG2010 him to goG4198 to his friendsG5384 and receiveG5177 careG1958. 4From thereG2547 we putG321 out to seaG321 and sailedG5284 underG5284 the shelterG5284 of 14CyprusG2954 becauseG1223 15the windsG417 were contraryG1727. 5When we had sailedG1277 throughG1277 the seaG3989 alongG2596 the coastG2596 of 16CiliciaG2791 and 17PamphyliaG3828, we landedG2718 at MyraG3460 in LyciaG3073. 6ThereG2546 the centurionG1543 foundG2147 an 18AlexandrianG222 shipG4143 sailingG4126 for 19ItalyG2482, and he putG1688 us aboardG1688 it. 7When we had sailedG1020 slowlyG1020 for a goodG2425 manyG2425 daysG2250, and with difficultyG3433 had arrivedG1096 offG2596 CnidusG2834, 20since the windG417 did not permitG4330 us to go fartherG4330, we sailedG5284 underG5284 the shelterG5284 of 21CreteG2914, offG2596 SalmoneG4534; 8and with difficultyG3433 22sailingG3881 pastG3881 it we cameG2064 to a placeG5117 calledG2564 FairG2568 HavensG2568, nearG1451 whichG3739 was the cityG4172 of LaseaG2996.
9When considerableG2425 timeG5550 had passedG1230 and the voyageG4144 was nowG2235 dangerousG2000, sinceG1223 evenG2532 23the 24fastG3521 was alreadyG2235 overG3928, PaulG3972 began to admonishG3867 them, 10and saidG3004 to them, “MenG435, I perceiveG2334 that the voyageG4144 willG3195 certainlyG3195 be with 25damageG5196 and greatG4183 lossG2209, not onlyG3440 of the cargoG5413 and the shipG4143, but alsoG2532 of our livesG5590.” 11But the centurionG1543 was moreG3123 persuadedG3982 by the 26pilotG2942 and the 27captainG3490 of the shipG3490 thanG2228 by what was being saidG3004 by PaulG3972. 12Because the harborG3040 was not suitableG428 for winteringG3915, the majorityG4183 reachedG5087 a decisionG1012 to putG321 out to seaG321 from thereG1564, ifG1487 somehowG4458 they couldG1410 reachG2658 PhoenixG5405, a harborG3040 of 28CreteG2914, facingG991 southwestG3047 and northwestG5566, and spendG3914 the winterG3914 there.
1329When a moderateG5285 southG3558 windG3558 cameG5285 up, supposingG1380 that they had attainedG2902 their purposeG4286, they weighedG142 anchorG142 and began 30sailingG3881 alongG3881 31CreteG2914, closeG788 inshore.
Shipwreck
14But beforeG3326G3756 veryG4183 longG4183 there 32rushedG906 downG2596 from 33the land a violentG5189 windG417, calledG2564 34EuraquiloG2146; 15and when the shipG4143 was caughtG4884 in it and couldG1410 not faceG503 the windG417, we gaveG1929 wayG1929 to it and let ourselves be drivenG5342 along. 16RunningG5295 underG5295 the shelterG5295 of a smallG3519 islandG3519 calledG2564 ClaudaG2802, we were scarcelyG3433 ableG2480 to getG1096 the ship’s 35boatG4627 underG4031 controlG4031. 17After they had hoistedG142 it up, they usedG5530 36supportingG996 cablesG996 in undergirdingG5269 the shipG4143; and fearingG5399 that they might 37runG1601 agroundG1601 on the shallows of SyrtisG4950, they letG5465 downG5465 the 38seaG4632 anchorG4632 and in thisG3779 wayG3779 let themselves be drivenG5342 along. 18The nextG1836 day as we were being violentlyG4971 storm-tossedG5492, 39they began to 40jettisonG1546 the cargoG1546; 19and on the thirdG5154 day they threwG4496 the ship’sG4143 tackleG4631 overboard with their ownG849 handsG849. 20Since neitherG3383 sunG2246 norG3383 starsG798 appearedG2014 for manyG4183 daysG2250, and noG3756 smallG3641 stormG5494 was assailingG1945 us, from thenG3062 on allG3956 hopeG1680 of our being savedG4982 was gradually abandonedG4014.
2141When they had goneG5225 a longG4183 timeG776 withoutG776 foodG776, thenG5119 PaulG3972 stoodG2476 up in their midstG3319 and saidG3004, “42MenG435, you oughtG1163 to have 43followedG3980 my adviceG3980 and not to have setG321 sailG321 from 44CreteG2914 and 45incurredG2770 thisG3778 46damageG5196 and lossG2209. 22Yet nowG3568 I urgeG3867 you to 47keepG2114 up your courageG2114, for there will be noG3762 lossG580 of lifeG5590 amongG1537 you, but only of the shipG4143. 23For thisG3778 very nightG3571 48an angelG32 of the GodG2316 to whomG3739 I belongG1510 and 49whomG3739 I serveG3000 50stoodG3936 beforeG3936 me, 24sayingG3004, ‘Do not be afraidG5399, PaulG3972; 51you mustG1163 standG3936 beforeG3936 CaesarG2541; and beholdG2400, GodG2316 has grantedG5483 you 52allG3956 thoseG3588 who are sailingG4126 with you.’ 25ThereforeG1352, 53keepG2114 up your courageG2114, menG435, for I believeG4100 GodG2316 that 54it will turnG1510 out exactlyG3779G2596G5158 as I have been toldG2980. 26But we mustG1163 55runG1601 agroundG1601 on a certainG5100 56islandG3520.”
27But whenG5613 the fourteenthG5065 nightG3571 cameG1096, as we were being drivenG1308 aboutG1308 in the AdriaticG99 Sea, aboutG2596 midnightG3319G3571 the sailorsG3492 began to surmiseG5282 that 57they were approachingG4317 someG5100 landG5561. 28They tookG1001 soundingsG1001 and foundG2147 it to be twentyG1501 fathomsG3712; and a littleG1024 fartherG1339 on they tookG1001 anotherG3825 soundingG1001 and foundG2147 it to be fifteenG1178 fathomsG3712. 29FearingG5399 that we might 58runG1601 agroundG1601 somewhereG4225 on the 59rocksG5138, they castG4496 fourG5064 anchorsG45 from the sternG4403 and 60wishedG2172 for daybreakG2250. 30But as the sailorsG3492 were tryingG2212 to escapeG5343 from the shipG4143 and had letG5465 downG5465 61the ship’s boatG4627 into the seaG2281, on the pretenseG4392 of intendingG3195 to layG1614 out anchorsG45 from the bowG4408, 31PaulG3972 saidG3004 to the centurionG1543 and to the soldiersG4757, “UnlessG1437G3361 theseG3778 menG3778 remainG3306 in the shipG4143, you yourselvesG4771 cannotG1410G3756 be savedG4982.” 32ThenG5119 the soldiersG4757 cutG609 awayG609 the 62ropesG4979 of the ship’s boatG4627 and letG1439 it fallG1601 awayG1601.
33UntilG891 the dayG2250 was aboutG3195 to dawnG1096, PaulG3972 was encouragingG3870 them allG537 to takeG3335 some foodG5160, sayingG3004, “TodayG4594 is the fourteenthG5065 dayG2250 that you have been constantlyG1300 watchingG4328 and going withoutG777 eatingG777, having takenG4355 nothingG3367. 34ThereforeG1352 I encourageG3870 you to takeG3335 some foodG5160, for thisG3778 is for your preservationG4991, for 63not a hairG2359 from the headG2776 of anyG3762 of you will perishG622.” 35Having saidG3004 thisG3778, he tookG2983 breadG740 and 64gaveG2168 thanksG2168 to GodG2316 in the presenceG1799 of allG3956, and he brokeG2806 it and beganG757 to eatG2068. 36AllG3956 65of them 66were encouragedG2115 and they themselvesG846 also tookG4355 foodG5160. 37AllG3956 of us in the shipG4143 were twoG1250 hundredG1250 and seventy-sixG1440G1803 6768personsG5590. 38When they had eatenG2880 enoughG2880G5160, they began to lightenG2893 the shipG4143 by 69throwingG1544 out the wheatG4621 into the seaG2281.
39WhenG3753 dayG2250 cameG1096, 70they 71could not recognizeG1921 the landG1093; but they did observeG2657 a bayG2859 with a beachG123, and they resolvedG1011 to driveG1856 the shipG4143 ontoG1856 it ifG1487 they couldG1410. 40And castingG4014 offG4014 72the anchorsG45, they leftG1439 them in the seaG2281 while at the sameG260 timeG260 they were looseningG447 the ropesG2202 of the ruddersG4079; and hoistingG1869 the foresailG736 to the windG4154, they were headingG2722 for the beachG123. 41But strikingG4045 a 73reefG5117 whereG1337 twoG1337 seasG1337 metG1337, they ranG1946 the vesselG3491 agroundG1946; and the prowG4408 stuckG2043 fastG2043 and remainedG3306 immovableG761, but the sternG4403 began to be brokenG3089 up by the forceG970 of the waves. 42The soldiers’G4757 planG1012 was to 74killG615 the prisonersG1202, so that noneG3361G5100 of them would swimG1579 awayG1579 and escapeG1309; 43but the centurionG1543, 75wantingG1014 to bringG1295 PaulG3972 safelyG1295 throughG1295, keptG2967 them from their intentionG1013, and commandedG2753 that thoseG3588 who couldG1410 swimG2860 should 76jumpG641 overboardG641 firstG4413 and getG1826 to landG1093, 44and the restG3062 should follow, someG3739G3303 on planksG4548, and othersG3739G1161 on variousG5100 thingsG5100 from the shipG4143. And soG3779 it happenedG1096 that 77they allG3956 were broughtG1295 safelyG1295 to landG1093.
