Cornelius’s Vision

1NowG1161 there was a manG435 at 1CaesareaG2542 namedG3686 CorneliusG2883, a centurionG1543 of what was 2calledG2564 the ItalianG2483 3cohortG4686, 2a devoutG2152 manG2152 and 4one who fearedG5399 GodG2316 with allG3956 his householdG3624, and 5gaveG4160 manyG4183 6almsG1654 to the Jewish peopleG2992 and prayedG1189 to GodG2316 continuallyG1223G3956. 3AboutG5616G4012 7the 8ninthG1729 hourG5610 of the dayG2250 he clearlyG5320 sawG3708 9in a visionG3705 10an angelG32 of GodG2316 who had just comeG1525 in and saidG3004 to him, “CorneliusG2883!” 4And 11fixingG816 his gazeG816 on him and beingG1096 muchG1719 alarmedG1719, he saidG3004, “WhatG5101 is it, LordG2962?” And he saidG3004 to him, “Your prayersG4335 and 12almsG1654 13have ascendedG305 14as a memorialG3422 beforeG1715 GodG2316. 5NowG3568 dispatchG3992 some menG435 to 15JoppaG2445 and sendG3343 for a manG5100 named SimonG4613, whoG3739 is also calledG1941 PeterG4074; 6he is stayingG3579 with a tannerG1038 named 16SimonG4613, whoseG3739 houseG3614 is by the seaG2281.” 7WhenG5613 the angelG32 who was speakingG2980 to him had leftG565, he summonedG5455 twoG1417 of his 17servantsG3610 and a devoutG2152 soldierG4757 of thoseG3588 who were his personalG4342 attendantsG4342, 8and after he had explainedG1834 everythingG537 to them, he sentG649 them to 18JoppaG2445.

9On the nextG1887 dayG1887, as they were on their wayG3596 and approachingG1448 the cityG4172, 19PeterG4074 wentG305 up on 20the housetopG1430 aboutG4012 21the 22sixthG1623 hourG5610 to prayG4336. 10But he becameG1096 hungryG4361 and was desiringG2309 to eatG1089; but while they were makingG3903 preparationsG3903, he 23fellG1096 into a tranceG1611; 11and he sawG2334 24the 25skyG3772 openedG455 up, and an 26objectG4632 likeG5613 a greatG3173 sheetG3607 comingG2597 downG2524, loweredG2524 by fourG5064 cornersG746 to the groundG1093, 12and there were in it allG3956 kinds of four-footedG5074 animalsG5074 and 27crawlingG2062 creaturesG2062 of the earthG1093 and birdsG4071 of the 28airG3772. 13A voiceG5456 cameG1096 to him, “GetG450 up, PeterG4074, 29killG2380 and eatG2068!” 14But PeterG4074 saidG3004, “By noG3365 meansG3365, 30LordG2962, for 31I have neverG3763 eatenG2068 anythingG3956 32unholyG2839 and uncleanG169.” 15AgainG3825 a voiceG5456 came to him a secondG1208 timeG1208, “33WhatG3739 GodG2316 has cleansedG2511, noG3361 longer considerG2840 34unholyG2839.” 16ThisG3778 happenedG1096 threeG5151 timesG5151, and immediatelyG2117 the 35objectG4632 was takenG353 up into the 36skyG3772.

17NowG1161 whileG5613 PeterG4074 was greatlyG1280 perplexedG1280 in 37mindG1438 as to whatG5101 38the visionG3705 whichG3739 he had seenG3708 might be, beholdG2400, 39the menG435 who had been sentG649 by CorneliusG2883, having askedG1331 directionsG1331 for Simon’sG4613 houseG3614, appearedG2186 at the gateG4440; 18and callingG5455 out, they were askingG4441 whetherG1487 SimonG4613, who was also calledG1941 PeterG4074, was stayingG3579 thereG1759. 19While PeterG4074 was reflectingG1327 on 40the visionG3705, 41the SpiritG4151 saidG3004 to him, “BeholdG2400, 42threeG5140 menG435 are lookingG2212 for you. 20But getG450 up, goG2597 downstairsG2597 and 43accompanyG4198G4862 them 44withoutG3367 misgivingsG1252, for I have sentG649 them MyselfG1473.” 21PeterG4074 wentG2597 downG2597 to the menG435 and saidG3004, “BeholdG2400, I amG1510 the one you are lookingG2212 for; whatG5101 is the reasonG156 for whichG3739 you have comeG3918?” 22They saidG3004, “CorneliusG2883, a centurionG1543, a righteousG1342 and 45God-fearingG2316 manG435 wellG3140 spokenG3140 of by the entireG3650 nationG1484 of the JewsG2453, 46was divinely directedG5537 by a 47holyG40 angelG32 to sendG3343 for you to come to his houseG3624 and hearG191 4849a messageG4487 from you.”

Peter at Caesarea

23SoG3767 he invitedG1528 them in and gaveG3579 them lodgingG3579.

And on the nextG1887 dayG1887 he gotG450 up and wentG1831 awayG1831 with them, and 50someG5100 of 51the brethrenG80 from 52JoppaG2445 accompaniedG4905 him. 24On the followingG1887 dayG1887 he enteredG1525 53CaesareaG2542. NowG1161 CorneliusG2883 was waitingG4327 for them and had calledG4779 togetherG4779 his relativesG4773 and closeG316 friendsG5384. 25WhenG5613 PeterG4074 enteredG1525, CorneliusG2883 metG4876 him, and fellG4098 at his feetG4228 and 5455worshipedG4352 him. 26But PeterG4074 raisedG1453 him up, sayingG3004, “56StandG450 up; I tooG2532 amG1510 just a manG444.” 27As he talkedG4926 with him, he enteredG1525 and foundG2147 57manyG4183 peopleG4183 assembledG4905. 28And he saidG5346 to them, “You yourselvesG4771 knowG1987 howG5613 58unlawfulG111 it is for a manG435 who is a JewG2453 to associateG2853 with a foreignerG246 orG2228 to visitG4334 him; and yet 59GodG2316 has shownG1166 me that I should not callG3004 anyG3367 manG444 60unholyG2839 orG2228 uncleanG169. 29That is whyG1352 I cameG2064 withoutG369 evenG2532 raisingG369 any objectionG369 when I was sentG3343 for. SoG3767 I askG4441 for whatG5101 reasonG3056 you have sentG3343 for me.”

30CorneliusG2883 saidG5346, “61FourG5067 daysG2250 agoG575 to thisG3778 hourG5610, I was prayingG4336 in my houseG3624 during 62the 63ninthG1729 hourG1729; and beholdG2400, 64a manG435 stoodG2476 beforeG1799 me in shiningG2986 garmentsG2066, 31and he saidG5346, ‘CorneliusG2883, your prayerG4335 has been heardG1522 and your 65almsG1654 have been rememberedG3403 beforeG1799 GodG2316. 32ThereforeG3767 sendG3992 to 66JoppaG2445 and inviteG3333 SimonG4613, whoG3739 is also calledG1941 PeterG4074, to come to you; he is stayingG3579 at the houseG3614 of SimonG4613 the tannerG1038 by the seaG2281.’ 33SoG3767 I sentG3992 for you immediatelyG1824, and you have 67been kindG2573 enoughG2573 to comeG3854. NowG3568 thenG3767, we are allG3956 hereG3918 presentG3918 beforeG1799 GodG2316 to hearG191 allG3956 that you have been commandedG4367 by the LordG2962.”

Gentiles Hear Good News

3468OpeningG455 his mouthG4750, PeterG4074 saidG3004:

“I mostG225 certainlyG1909G225 understandG2638 now that 69GodG2316 is not oneG4381 to showG4381 partialityG4381, 35but 70in everyG3956 nationG1484 the man who 7172fearsG5399 Him and 73doesG2038 what is rightG1343 is welcomeG1184 to Him. 36The wordG3056 whichG3739 He sentG649 to the sonsG5207 of IsraelG2274, 74preachingG2097 7576peaceG1515 throughG1223 JesusG2424 ChristG5547 (He is 77LordG2962 of allG3956)-- 37you yourselvesG4771 knowG3609 the thingG4487 which tookG1096 placeG1096 throughoutG2596 allG3650 JudeaG2453, startingG757 from GalileeG1056, afterG3326 the baptismG908 whichG3739 JohnG2491 proclaimedG2784. 3878You know of 79JesusG2424 of NazarethG3478, howG5613 GodG2316 80anointedG5548 Him with the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 and with powerG1411, 8182and how He wentG1330 aboutG1330 doingG2109 goodG2109 and healingG2390 allG3956 who were oppressedG2616 by the devilG1228, for 83GodG2316 was with Him. 39We are 84witnessesG3144 of allG3956 the thingsG3956 He didG4160 bothG5037 in the 85landG5561 of the JewsG2453 and in JerusalemG2419. They alsoG2532 86putG337 Him to deathG337 by hangingG2910 Him on a 87crossG3586. 4088GodG2316 raisedG1453 Him up on the thirdG5154 dayG2250 and grantedG1325 that He becomeG1096 visibleG1717, 4189not to allG3956 the peopleG2992, but to 90witnessesG3144 who were chosenG4401 beforehandG4401 by GodG2316, that is, to us 91whoG3748 ateG4906 and drankG4844 with Him afterG3326 He aroseG450 from the deadG3498. 42And He 92orderedG3853 us to 93preachG2784 to the peopleG2992, and solemnlyG1263 to 94testifyG1263 that thisG3778 is the One who has been 95appointedG3724 by GodG2316 as 96JudgeG2923 of the livingG2198 and the deadG3498. 43Of Him 97allG3956 the prophetsG4396 bearG3140 witnessG3140 that throughG1223 98His nameG3686 everyoneG3956 who believesG4100 in Him receivesG2983 forgivenessG859 of sinsG266.”

44While PeterG4074 was stillG2089 speakingG2980 theseG3778 wordsG4487, 99the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 fellG1968 upon allG3956 thoseG3588 who were listeningG191 to the 100messageG3056. 45101AllG3745 the 102circumcisedG4061 believersG4103 whoG3745 cameG4905 with PeterG4074 were amazedG1839, becauseG3754 the giftG1431 of the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 had been 103pouredG1632 out on the GentilesG1484 alsoG2532. 46For they were hearingG191 them 104speakingG2980 with tonguesG1100 and exaltingG3170 GodG2316. ThenG5119 PeterG4074 answeredG611, 47“105SurelyG3385 noG3385 oneG5100 canG1410 refuseG2967 the waterG5204 for theseG3778 to be baptizedG907 whoG3748 106have receivedG2983 the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 justG5613 as we did, can he?” 48And he 107orderedG4367 them to be baptizedG907 108in the nameG3686 of JesusG2424 ChristG5547. ThenG5119 they askedG2065 him to stayG1961 on for a fewG5100 daysG2250.
