Acts 13

Paul’s First Missionary Journey Begins

(Acts 15:36–41; Acts 18:23–28)

1NowG1161 inG2596 theG3588 churchG1577 atG1722 AntiochG490 there wereG1510 prophetsG4396 andG2532 teachersG1320: BarnabasG921, SimeonG4826 calledG2564 NigerG3526, LuciusG3066 ofG3588 CyreneG2956, ManaenG3127 (who had been brought up withG4939 HerodG2264 theG3588 tetrarchG5076), andG2532 SaulG4569. 2While theyG846 were worshipingG3008 theG3588 LordG2962 andG2532 fastingG3522, theG3588 HolyG40 SpiritG4151 saidG2036, “Set apartG873 for MeG1473 BarnabasG921 andG2532 SaulG4569 forG1519 theG3588 workG2041 to whichG3739 I have calledG4341 themG846.” 3AndG5119 after they had fastedG3522 andG2532 prayedG4336, they laidG2007 their handsG5495 on themG846 and sent them offG630.

On Cyprus

4SoG3767G3303 Barnabas and Saul, sent forthG1599 byG5259 theG3588 HolyG40 SpiritG4151, went downG2718 toG1519 SeleuciaG4581 andG5037 sailedG636 from thereG1564 toG1519 CyprusG2954. 5When they arrivedG1096 atG1722 SalamisG4529, they proclaimedG2605 theG3588 wordG3056 of GodG2316 inG1722 theG3588 JewishG3588G2453 synagoguesG4864. AndG1161 JohnG2491 was with themG2192 as their helperG5257.

6

They traveled throughG1330 theG3588 wholeG3650 islandG3520 as far asG891 PaphosG3974, where they foundG2147 aG5100 JewishG435G2453 sorcererG3097 and false prophetG5578 namedG3739G3686 Bar-JesusG919, 7an attendantG1510G4862 of theG3588 proconsulG446, SergiusG4588 PaulusG3972. The proconsul, a manG435 of intelligenceG4908, summonedG4341 BarnabasG921 andG2532 SaulG4569 because he wantedG1934 to hearG191 theG3588 wordG3056 of GodG2316. 8ButG1161 ElymasG1681 theG3588 sorcererG3097 (forG1063 that is whatG3779 hisG846 nameG3686 meansG3177) opposedG436 themG846 and triedG2212 to turnG1294 theG3588 proconsulG446 fromG575 theG3588 faithG4102.

9ThenG1161 SaulG4569, whoG3588 was alsoG2532 called PaulG3972, filled withG4130 the HolyG40 SpiritG4151, looked directlyG816 atG1519 ElymasG846 10and saidG2036, “OG5599 childG5207 of the devilG1228 and enemyG2190 of allG3956 righteousnessG1343, you are fullG4134 of all kindsG3956 of deceitG1388 andG2532 trickeryG4468! Will you never stopG3756G3973 pervertingG1294 theG3588 straightG2117 waysG3598 of theG3588 LordG2962? 11NowG2532G3568 lookG2400, the handG5495 of the LordG2962 is againstG1909 youG4771, andG2532 forG891 a timeG2540 you will beG1510 blindG5185 and unable to seeG3361G991 theG3588 light of the sunG2246.” ImmediatelyG3916 mistG887 andG2532 darknessG4655 cameG4098 overG1909 himG846, andG2532 he groped aboutG4013, seekingG2212 someone to lead him by the handG5497.

12When theG3588 proconsulG446 sawG3708 whatG3588 had happenedG1096, he believedG4100, for he was astonishedG1605 atG1909 theG3588 teachingG1322 about theG3588 LordG2962.

In Pisidian Antioch

13After setting sailG321 fromG575 PaphosG3974, PaulG3972 and his companionsG3588G4012 cameG2064 toG1519 PergaG4011 in PamphyliaG3828, where JohnG2491 leftG672G575 themG846 to returnG5290 toG1519 JerusalemG2414. 14AndG1161 fromG575 PergaG4011, theyG846 traveled inlandG1330G3854 toG1519 PisidianG4099 AntiochG490, whereG2532 they enteredG1525G1519 theG3588 synagogueG4864 on theG3588 SabbathG4521G2250 and sat downG2523. 15AfterG3326 theG3588 readingG320 from theG3588 LawG3551 andG2532 theG3588 ProphetsG4396, theG3588 synagogue leadersG752 sent wordG649 toG4314 themG846: “BrothersG435G80, ifG1487 you haveG1510G1722G4771 aG5100 wordG3056 of encouragementG3874 forG4314 theG3588 peopleG2992, please speakG3004.”

16

PaulG3972 stood upG450, motionedG2678 withG3588 his handG5495, and began to speakG2036: “MenG435 of IsraelG2475 andG2532 you Gentiles whoG3588 fearG5399 GodG2316, listenG191 to me! 17TheG3588 GodG2316 ofG3778 theG3588 peopleG2992 of IsraelG2474 choseG1586 ourG1473 fathersG3962. He made them into a greatG5312 peopleG2992 duringG1722 their stayG3940 inG1722 EgyptG125, andG2532 withG3326 an upliftedG5308 armG1023 He ledG1806 themG846 out ofG1537 that land. 18He endured their conductG5159G846 forG5550 aboutG5613 forty yearsG5063 inG1722 theG3588 wildernessG2048. 19AndG2532 having vanquishedG2507 sevenG2033 nationsG1484 inG1722 CanaanG5477, He gave theirG846 landG1093 to His people as an inheritanceG2624. 20All this took about 450G5071G2532G4004 yearsG2094.

AfterG3326 thisG3778, God gaveG1325 them judgesG2923 until the timeG2193 of SamuelG4545 theG3588 prophetG4396. 21ThenG2547 the people asked forG154 a kingG935, andG2532 GodG2316 gaveG1325 themG846 SaulG4549 sonG5207 of KishG2797, fromG1537 the tribeG5443 of BenjaminG958, who ruled fortyG5062 yearsG2094. 22After removingG3179 Saul, He raised upG1453 DavidG1138 asG1519 theirG846 kingG935 andG2532 testifiedG2036G3140 about him: ‘I have foundG2147 DavidG1138 son of JesseG2421 a manG435 afterG2596 MyG1473 own heartG2588; he will carry outG4160 MyG1473 willG2307 in its entiretyG3956.’1

23FromG575 theG3588 descendantsG4690 of thisG3778 man, GodG2316 has broughtG71 to IsraelG2474 the SaviorG4990 JesusG2424, asG2596 He promisedG1860. 24BeforeG4253G4383 theG3588 arrivalG1529 ofG846 Jesus, JohnG2491 preachedG4296 a baptismG908 of repentanceG3341 to allG3956 theG3588 peopleG2992 of IsraelG2474. 25AsG5613 JohnG2491 was completingG4137 his courseG1408, he saidG2036, ‘WhoG5101 do you supposeG5282 IG1473 amG1510? IG1473 amG1510 notG3756 that One. ButG235 there isG2400 One comingG2064 afterG3326 meG1473 whoseG3739 sandalsG5266G3588G4228 I amG1510 notG3756 worthyG514 to untieG3089.’2

26BrothersG435G80, childrenG5207 of AbrahamG11G1085, andG2532 you Gentiles whoG4771 fearG5399 GodG2316, it is to usG1473 that thisG3778 messageG3056 ofG3588 salvationG4991 has been sentG1821. 27TheG3588 people ofG1722 JerusalemG2419 andG2532 theirG846 rulersG758 did not recognizeG50 Jesus, yetG2532 in condemningG2919 Him they fulfilledG4137 theG3588 wordsG5456 of theG3588 prophetsG4396 thatG3588 are readG314 everyG3956 SabbathG4521. 28AndG2532 though they foundG2147 noG3367 groundG156 for a death sentenceG2288, they askedG154 PilateG4091 to have Him executedG337G846.

29

WhenG5613 they had carried outG5055 allG3956 thatG3588 was writtenG1125 aboutG4012 HimG846, they took Him downG2507 fromG575 theG3588 treeG3586 and laidG5087 Him inG1519 a tombG3419. 30ButG1161 GodG2316 raisedG1453 HimG846 fromG1537 the deadG3498, 31and forG1909 manyG4119 daysG2250 He was seenG3708 by those whoG3588 had accompaniedG4872 HimG846 fromG575 GalileeG1056 toG1519 JerusalemG2419. They areG1510 nowG3568 HisG846 witnessesG3144 toG4314 our peopleG2992.

32And nowG2532 weG1473 proclaim to you the good newsG2097G4771: What God promisedG1860G1096 our fathersG3962 33He has fulfilledG1603 forG3588 usG1473, theirG846 childrenG5043, by raising up JesusG450G2424. AsG2532G5613 it is writtenG1125 inG1722 theG3588 secondG1208 PsalmG5568:

‘YouG4771 areG1510 MyG1473 SonG5207;todayG4594 IG1473 have become Your FatherG1080G4771.’3

34

In factG3754, God raisedG450 HimG846 fromG1537 the deadG3498, neverG3371 to seeG3195G5290G1519 decayG1312. As He has saidG2046G3779:

‘I will giveG1325 youG4771 theG3588 holyG3741 and sureG4103 blessings promised to DavidG1138.’4

35SoG1360 alsoG2532, He saysG3004 inG1722 anotherG2087 Psalm:

‘You will not letG3756G1325 YourG4771 Holy OneG3741 seeG3708 decayG1312.’5

36ForG1063 when DavidG1138 had servedG5256 God’sG3588G2316 purposeG1012 in his ownG2398 generationG1074, he fell asleepG2837. His body was buriedG4369 withG4314 hisG846 fathersG3962 andG2532 sawG3708 decayG1312. 37ButG1161 theG3739 One whomG3588 GodG2316 raised from the deadG1453 did not seeG3756G3708 decayG1312.

38ThereforeG3767 let it beG1510 knownG1110 to youG4771, brothersG435G80, thatG3754 throughG1223 Jesus the forgivenessG859 of sinsG266 is proclaimedG2605 to youG4771. 39ThroughG1722 HimG3778 everyoneG3956 whoG3588 believesG4100 is justifiedG1344 fromG575 everythingG3956 from whichG3739 you could notG3756G1410 be justifiedG1344 byG1722 the lawG3551 of MosesG3475. 40Watch outG991, thenG3767, thatG3588 what was spokenG3361G2046 byG1722 theG3588 prophetsG4396 does not happenG1904 to you:

41‘LookG3708, you scoffersG2707,wonderG2296 andG2532 perishG853!ForG3754 IG1473 am doingG2038 a workG2041 inG1722 yourG4771 daysG2250that you would never believeG3756G3361G4100,even ifG1437 someoneG5100 toldG1555 youG4771.’6”

A Light for the Gentiles

(Isaiah 49:1–6)

42As Paul and Barnabas were leavingG1826 the synagogue, the people urgedG3870 themG846 to continueG2980 thisG3778 messageG4487 onG1519 theG3588 nextG3342 SabbathG4521. 43After theG3588 synagogueG4864 was dismissedG3089, manyG4183 of theG3588 JewsG2453 andG2532 devoutG4576 converts to JudaismG4339 followedG190 PaulG3972 andG2532 BarnabasG921, whoG3748 spokeG4354 to themG846 and urgedG3982 themG846 to continueG4357 in theG3588 graceG5485 of GodG2316.

44

On theG3588 followingG2064 SabbathG4521, nearlyG4975 theG3588 wholeG3956 cityG4172 gatheredG4863 to hearG191 theG3588 wordG3056 of the LordG2962. 45ButG1161 when theG3588 JewsG2453 sawG3708 theG3588 crowdsG3793, they were filledG4130 with jealousyG2205, andG2532 they blasphemouslyG987 contradictedG483 whatG3588 PaulG5259G3972 was sayingG2980.

46ThenG5037 PaulG3972 andG2532 BarnabasG921 answered them boldlyG3955: “It wasG1510 necessaryG316 to speakG2980 theG3588 wordG3056 of GodG2316 to youG4771 firstG4412. But sinceG1894 you rejectG683 itG846 andG2532 do not considerG3756G2919 yourselvesG1438 worthyG514 of eternalG166 lifeG2222, we now turnG2400G4762 toG1519 theG3588 GentilesG1484. 47ForG1063 this is whatG3779 theG3588 LordG2962 has commandedG1781 usG1473:

‘I have madeG5087 youG4771 a lightG5457 for the GentilesG1484,to bringG1510G1519 salvationG4991 toG2193 the endsG2078 of theG3588 earthG1093.’7”

48When theG3588 GentilesG1484 heardG191 this, they rejoicedG5463 andG2532 glorifiedG1392 theG3588 wordG3056 of theG3588 LordG2962, andG2532 all whoG3745 wereG1510 appointedG5021 forG1519 eternalG166 lifeG2222 believedG4100. 49AndG1161 theG3588 wordG3056 of theG3588 LordG2962 spreadG1308 throughoutG1223G3650 that regionG5561.

50TheG3588 JewsG2453, howeverG1161, incitedG3951 theG3588 religiousG4576 womenG1135 of prominenceG2158 andG2532 theG3588 leading menG4413 of theG3588 cityG4172. They stirred upG1892 persecutionG1375 againstG1909 PaulG3972 andG2532 BarnabasG921 andG2532 drove them outG1544G846 ofG575 theirG846 districtG3725. 51So they shookG1621 theG3588 dustG2868 offG3588 their feetG4228 in protest againstG1909 themG846 and wentG2064 toG1519 IconiumG2430. 52AndG5037 theG3588 disciplesG3101 were filledG4137 with joyG5479 andG2532 with the HolyG40 SpiritG4151.
