Paul at Ephesus
1It happenedG1096 that whileG1722 1ApollosG625 was at 2CorinthG2882, PaulG3972 passedG1330 throughG1330 the 3upperG510 countryG3313 and cameG2064 to 4EphesusG2181, and foundG2147 someG5100 disciplesG3101. 2He saidG3004 to them, “5Did you receiveG2983 the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 when you believedG4100?” And they said to him, “NoG3761, 6we have not evenG3761 heardG191 whetherG1487 7there is a HolyG40 SpiritG4151.” 3And he saidG3004, “Into whatG5101 thenG3767 were you baptizedG907?” And they saidG3004, “8Into John’sG2491 baptismG908.” 4PaulG3972 saidG3004, “9JohnG2491 baptizedG907 with the baptismG908 of repentanceG3341, tellingG3004 the peopleG2992 10to believeG4100 in Him who was comingG2064 afterG3326 him, that is, in JesusG2424.” 5When they heardG191 this, they were 11baptizedG907 12in the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 JesusG2424. 6And when PaulG3972 had 13laidG2007 his handsG5495 upon them, the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 cameG2064 on them, and they began 14speakingG2980 with tonguesG1100 and 15prophesyingG4395. 7There were in allG3956 aboutG5616 twelveG1427 menG435.
8And he enteredG1525 16the synagogueG4864 and continued speakingG3955 out boldlyG3955 for threeG5140 monthsG3376, reasoningG1256 and persuadingG3982 them 17aboutG4012 the kingdomG932 of GodG2316. 9But whenG5613 18someG5100 were becomingG4645 hardenedG4645 and disobedientG544, speakingG2551 evilG2551 of 19the WayG3598 beforeG1799 the 20peopleG4128, he withdrewG868 from them and tookG873 awayG873 21the disciplesG3101, reasoningG1256 dailyG2596G2250 in the schoolG4981 of TyrannusG5181. 10ThisG3778 tookG1096 placeG1096 for 22twoG1417 yearsG2094, soG5620 that allG3956 who livedG2730 in 2324AsiaG773 heardG191 25the wordG3056 of the LordG2962, bothG5037 JewsG2453 and GreeksG1672.
Miracles at Ephesus
11GodG2316 was performingG4160 26extraordinaryG5177 27miraclesG1411 by the handsG5495 of PaulG3972, 1228soG5620 that handkerchiefsG4676 orG2228 apronsG4612 were evenG2532 carriedG667 from his bodyG5559 to the sickG770, and the diseasesG3554 leftG525 them and 29the evilG4190 spiritsG4151 wentG1607 out. 13But alsoG2532 someG5100 of the JewishG2453 30exorcistsG1845, who wentG4022 from placeG4022 to placeG4022, attemptedG2021 to nameG3687 overG1909 thoseG3588 who hadG2192 the evilG4190 spiritsG4151 the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 JesusG2424, sayingG3004, “I adjureG3726 you by JesusG2424 whomG3739 PaulG3972 preachesG2784.” 14SevenG2033 sonsG5207 of oneG5100 ScevaG4630, a JewishG2453 chiefG749 priestG749, were doingG4160 thisG3778. 15And the evilG4190 spiritG4151 answeredG611 and saidG3004 to them, “I recognizeG1097 JesusG2424, and I knowG1987 aboutG1987 PaulG3972, but whoG5101 are you?” 16And the manG444, in whomG3739 was the evilG4190 spiritG4151, leapedG2177 on them and subduedG2634 allG297 of them and overpoweredG2480 them, soG5620 that they fledG1628 out of that houseG3624 nakedG1131 and woundedG5135. 17ThisG3778 becameG1096 knownG1110 to allG3956, bothG5037 JewsG2453 and GreeksG1672, who livedG2730 in 31EphesusG2181; and fearG5401 fellG1968 upon them allG3956 and the nameG3686 of the LordG2962 JesusG2424 was being magnifiedG3170. 18ManyG4183 alsoG5037 of thoseG3588 who had believedG4100 kept comingG2064, confessingG1843 and disclosingG312 their practicesG4234. 19And manyG2425 of thoseG3588 who practicedG4238 magicG4021 broughtG4851 their booksG976 togetherG4851 and began burningG2618 them in the sightG1799 of everyoneG3956; and they countedG4860 up the priceG5092 of them and foundG2147 it 32fiftyG3461G4002 thousandG3461 33piecesG694 of silverG694. 20SoG3779 3435the wordG3056 of the LordG2962 36was growingG837 mightilyG2904 and prevailingG2480.
21NowG1161 afterG5613 theseG3778 thingsG3778 were finishedG4137, PaulG3972 purposedG5087 in the 37SpiritG4151 to 38goG4198 to JerusalemG2414 39after he had passedG1330 throughG1330 40MacedoniaG3109 and 41AchaiaG882, sayingG3004, “AfterG3326 I have beenG1096 thereG1563, 42I mustG1163 alsoG2532 seeG3708 RomeG4516.” 22And having sentG649 into 43MacedoniaG3109 twoG1417 of 44thoseG3588 who ministeredG1247 to him, 45TimothyG5095 and 46ErastusG2037, he himselfG846 stayedG1907 in 4748AsiaG773 for a whileG5550.
23AboutG2596 that timeG2540 there occurredG1096 noG3756 smallG3641 disturbanceG5017 concerningG4012 49the WayG3598. 24For a manG5100 namedG3686 DemetriusG1216, a silversmithG695, who madeG4160 silverG693 shrinesG3485 of 50ArtemisG735, 51was bringingG3930 noG3756 littleG3641 52businessG2039 to the craftsmenG5079; 25theseG3739 he gatheredG4867 togetherG4867 with the workmenG2040 of similarG5108 trades, and saidG3004, “MenG435, you knowG1987 that our prosperityG2142 53dependsG1510G1537 upon thisG3778 businessG2039. 26You seeG2334 and hearG191 that not onlyG3440 in 54EphesusG2181, but in almostG4975 allG3956 of 5556AsiaG773, thisG3778 PaulG3972 has persuadedG3982 and turnedG3179 awayG3179 a considerableG2425 numberG3793 of peopleG3793, sayingG3004 that 5758gods madeG1096 with handsG5495 are noG3756 godsG2316 at all. 27Not onlyG3440 is there dangerG2793 that thisG3778 tradeG3313 of oursG1473 fallG2064 into disreputeG557, but alsoG2532 that the templeG2413 of the greatG3173 goddessG2299 59ArtemisG735 be regardedG3049 as worthlessG3762 and that she whomG3739 allG3650 of 6061AsiaG773 and 62the 63worldG3625 worshipG4576 will evenG2532 be dethronedG2507 from her magnificenceG3168.”
28When they heardG191 this and were filledG4134 with rageG2372, they began cryingG2896 out, sayingG3004, “GreatG3173 is 64ArtemisG735 of the 65EphesiansG2180!” 29The cityG4172 was filledG4092 with the confusionG4799, and they rushedG3729 66with oneG3661 accordG3661 into the theaterG2302, draggingG4884 alongG4884 67GaiusG1050 and 68AristarchusG708, Paul’sG3972 travelingG4898 69companionsG4898 from 70MacedoniaG3110. 30And when PaulG3972 wantedG1014 to goG1525 into the 71assemblyG1218, 72the disciplesG3101 would not letG1439 him. 31AlsoG2532 someG5100 of the 73AsiarchsG775 who were friendsG5384 of his sentG3992 to him and repeatedly urgedG3870 him not to 74ventureG1325G1438 into the theaterG2302. 3275SoG3767 thenG3767, someG243 were shoutingG2896 oneG3303 thing and someG243 anotherG243, for the 76assemblyG1577 was in confusionG4797 and the majorityG4183 did not knowG3609 77for whatG5101 reasonG1752 they had comeG4905 togetherG4905. 33Some of the crowdG3793 78concludedG4822 it was AlexanderG223, since the JewsG2453 had putG4261 him forwardG4261; and having 79motionedG2678 with his handG5495, AlexanderG223 was intendingG2309 to makeG626 a defenseG626 to the 80assemblyG1218. 34But when they recognizedG1921 that he was a JewG2453, a single outcryG5456 aroseG1096 from them allG3956 as they shoutedG2896 for aboutG5613 twoG1417 hoursG5610, “GreatG3173 is 81ArtemisG735 of the EphesiansG2180!” 35AfterG1063 quietingG2687 the crowdG3793, the townG1122 clerkG1122 saidG5346, “MenG435 of 82EphesusG2181, whatG5101 manG444 is there afterG1063 allG1063 whoG3739 does not knowG1097 that the cityG4172 of the EphesiansG2180 is guardianG3511 of the templeG3511 of the greatG3173 83ArtemisG735 and of the image whichG1356 fellG1356 downG1356 from 84heavenG1356? 36SoG3767, since theseG3778 are undeniableG368 factsG368, you oughtG1189 to keepG2687 calmG2687 and to doG4238 nothingG3367 rashG4312. 37For you have broughtG71 theseG3778 menG435 here who are neitherG3777 85robbersG2417 of templesG2417 norG3777 blasphemersG987 of our goddessG2299. 38SoG3767 thenG3767, ifG1487 DemetriusG1216 and the craftsmenG5079 who are with him haveG2192 a complaintG3056 againstG4314 anyG5100 manG5100, the courtsG60 are in sessionG71 and 8687proconsulsG446 are available; let them bringG1458 chargesG1458 againstG1458 oneG240 anotherG240. 39But ifG1487 you wantG1934 anythingG5100 beyondG4007 this, it shall be settledG1956 in the 88lawfulG1772 89assemblyG1577. 40For indeedG2532 we are in dangerG2793 of being accusedG1458 of a riotG4714 in connectionG4012 with today’sG4594 events, since there is noG3367 real causeG159 for it, and in thisG3739 connectionG4012 we will be unableG3756G1410 to accountG3056G591 for thisG3778 disorderlyG4963 gatheringG4963.” 41After sayingG3004 thisG3778 he dismissedG630 the 90assemblyG1577.
