Acts 27
Paul Sails for Rome
WhenG5613 it was decidedG2919 that weG1473 would sailG636 forG1519 ItalyG2482, PaulG3972 andG2532 someG5100 otherG2087 prisonersG1202 were handed overG3860 to a centurionG1543 namedG3686 JuliusG2457, who belonged to the ImperialG45751 RegimentG4686. 2We boardedG1910 an AdramyttianG98 shipG4143 aboutG3195 to sailG4126 forG1519 portsG5117 alongG2596 the coast of AsiaG773,2 and we put out to seaG321. AristarchusG708, a MacedonianG3110 from ThessalonicaG2331, wasG1510 withG4862 usG1473.
TheG3588 nextG2087 day we landedG2609 atG1519 SidonG4605, andG5037 JuliusG2457 treatedG5530 PaulG3972 with considerationG5364, allowingG2010 him to visitG4198G4314 hisG3588 friendsG5384 and receiveG5177 their careG1958. 4After putting outG321 from thereG2547, we sailed to the leeG5284 of CyprusG2954 becauseG1223 theG3588 windsG417 wereG1510 against usG1727. 5AndG5037 when we had sailed acrossG1277 the open seaG3989 off the coastG2596 of CiliciaG2791 andG2532 PamphyliaG3828, we cameG2718 toG1519 MyraG3460 in LyciaG3073. 6ThereG2546 theG3588 centurionG1543 foundG2147 an AlexandrianG222 shipG4143 sailingG4126 forG1519 ItalyG2482 and putG1688 usG1473 onG1519 board.
7After sailing slowlyG1020G2532G3433 forG1722 manyG2425 daysG2250, we arrivedG1096 offG2596 CnidusG2834. When theG3588 windG417 impededG3361G4330 usG1473, we sailed to the leeG5284 of CreteG2914, oppositeG2596 SalmoneG4534. 8After we had moved along the coastG3881G846 with difficultyG3433, we cameG2064 toG1519 aG5100 placeG5117 calledG2564 FairG2570 HavensG3040, nearG1451 the townG4172 of LaseaG2996.
9By nowG1161 muchG2425 timeG5550 had passedG1230, andG2532 theG3588 voyageG4144 had already becomeG2235G1510 dangerousG2000 becauseG1223 it was afterG3928 theG3588 FastG3521.3 So PaulG3972 advisedG3867 them, 10“MenG435, I can seeG2334 thatG3754 our voyageG4144 willG3195 beG1510 filled withG3326 disasterG5196 andG2532 greatG4183 lossG2209, notG3756 onlyG3440 toG3588 shipG4143 andG2532 cargoG5413, butG235 to ourG1473 own livesG5590 as wellG2532.”
11ButG1161 contrary toG3123G2228 Paul’sG3972 adviceG3004, theG3588 centurionG1543 was persuadedG3982 by theG3588 pilotG2942 andG2532 by theG3588 owner of the shipG3490. 12SinceG1161 theG3588 harborG3040 wasG5225 unsuitableG428 toG4314 winter inG3915, theG3588 majorityG4119 decidedG5087G1012 to sailG321 onG1564, hoping thatG1487 somehowG4459 they couldG1410 reachG2658G1519 PhoenixG5405 to winterG3914 there. Phoenix was a harborG3040 in CreteG2914 facingG991 both southwestG3047 andG2532 northwestG5566.
The Storm at Sea
(Jonah 1:4–10)
13When a gentle south windG3558 began to blowG5285, they thoughtG1380 they hadG2902 their opportunityG4286. So they weighedG142 anchor and sailed alongG3881, hugging the coastG788 of CreteG2914. 14ButG1161 it was notG3756 longG4183 before a cycloneG5189G417 calledG2564 the NortheasterG2148 sweptG906 down acrossG2596 the island. 15UnableG3361G1410 to head intoG503 theG3588 windG417, theG3588 shipG4143 was caught upG4884. So we gave wayG1929 and let ourselves be driven alongG5342.
Passing to the leeG5295 of a smallG5100 islandG3519 calledG2564 CaudaG2802,4 we barely managedG2480G3433 to secureG1096G4031 theG3588 lifeboatG4627. 17After hoisting it upG142, the crew usedG5530 ropesG996 to undergirdG5269 theG3588 shipG4143. AndG5037 fearingG5399 thatG3361 they would run agroundG1601 onG1519 theG3588 sandbars of SyrtisG4950, they loweredG5465 theG3588 sea anchorG46325 and were driven alongG5342.
WeG1473 were tossed soG5492 violentlyG4971 that theG3588 nextG1836 day the men beganG4160 to jettison the cargoG1546. 19On theG3588 thirdG5154 day, they threwG4496 theG3588 ship’sG3588G4143 tackle overboardG4631 with their own handsG849. 20When neitherG3383 sunG2246 norG3383 starsG798 appearedG2014 forG1909 manyG4119 daysG2250 andG5037 the great stormG5494 continued to batter usG1945, we abandonedG4014 allG3956 hopeG1680 ofG1473 being savedG4982.
21After the men had goneG5225 a longG4183 time without foodG776, PaulG3972 stood upG2476 among themG1722G846G3319 and saidG2036, “MenG435, you should haveG1163 followed my adviceG3980G1473 notG3361 to sailG321 fromG575 CreteG2914. ThenG5037 you would have averted thisG3778 disasterG5196 andG2532 lossG2209. 22But nowG3568 I urgeG3867 youG4771 to keep up your courageG2114, becauseG1063 youG4771 will not experienceG1510G3762 any lossG580 of lifeG5590, but onlyG4133 of theG3588 shipG4143. 23ForG1063 just last nightG3571 an angelG32 of theG3588 GodG2316 to whomG3739 IG1473 belongG1510 andG2532 whomG3739 I serveG3000 stood besideG3936 meG1473 24and saidG3004, ‘Do notG3361 be afraidG5399, PaulG3972; youG4771 mustG1163 stand beforeG3936 CaesarG2541. AndG2532 lookG2400, GodG2316 has grantedG5483 youG4771 the lives of allG3956 whoG3588 sailG4126 withG3326 youG4771.’
25SoG1352 take courageG2114, menG435, forG1063 I believeG4100 GodG2316 thatG3754 it will happenG1510 justG3779G2596 asG3739G5158 He toldG2980 meG1473. 26HoweverG1161, weG1473 mustG1163 run agroundG1601 onG1519 someG5100 islandG3520.”
The Shipwreck
On the fourteenthG5065 nightG3571 weG1473 were still being drivenG1308 acrossG1722 theG3588 Adriatic SeaG99.6 AboutG2596 midnightG3319G3588G3571 theG3588 sailorsG3492 sensedG5282 theyG846 were approachingG4317 landG5100G5561. 28They took soundingsG1001 and found thatG2147 the water was twentyG1501 fathomsG3712 deep.7 GoingG1339 a little fartherG1024, they took another set of soundingsG1001G3825 that readG2147 fifteenG1178 fathomsG3712.8 29Fearing thatG5399G3361 we would run agroundG1601G4225 onG2596 the rocksG5138G5117, they droppedG4496 fourG5064 anchorsG45 fromG1537 the sternG4403 and prayed forG2172 daybreakG2250G1096.
30MeanwhileG1161, theG3588 sailorsG3492 attemptedG2212 to escapeG5343 fromG1537 theG3588 shipG4143. PretendingG4392G5613G3195 to lowerG1614 anchorsG45 fromG1537 the bowG4408, they letG5465 theG3588 lifeboatG4627 down intoG1519 theG3588 seaG2281. 31But PaulG3972 saidG2036 to theG3588 centurionG1543 andG2532 theG3588 soldiersG4757, “UnlessG1437G3361 theseG3778 men remainG3306 withG1722 theG3588 shipG4143, youG4771 cannotG3756G1410 be savedG4982.” 32So theG3588 soldiersG4757 cutG609 theG3588 ropesG4979 to theG3588 lifeboatG4627 andG2532 setG1439 itG846 adriftG1601.
33RightG1161 up toG891 daybreakG2250G3195G1096, PaulG3972 kept urgingG3870 them allG537 to eatG3335G5160: “TodayG4594 is your fourteenthG5065 dayG2250 in constant suspenseG4328, without taking any foodG1300G4355G3367G777. 34SoG1352 forG4314 yourG5212 own preservationG4991, I urgeG3870 youG4771 to eat somethingG3335G5160, becauseG1063 not a singleG3762 hairG2359 ofG575 yourG4771 headG2776 will be lostG622.”
35After he had saidG2036 thisG3778, Paul tookG2983 breadG740 and gave thanksG2168 to GodG2316 in front ofG1799 them allG3956. ThenG2532 he brokeG2806 it and beganG756 to eatG2068. 36They wereG1096 allG3956 encouragedG2115 andG2532 tookG4355 some foodG5160 themselvesG846. 37In allG3956, there wereG1510 276G1250G1440G18039 of usG5590 onG1722 board. 38After the men had eaten their fillG2880G5160, they lightenedG2893 theG3588 shipG4143 by throwingG1544 theG3588 grainG4621 intoG1519 theG3588 seaG2281.
WhenG3753 daylightG2250 cameG1096, they did not recognizeG3756G1921 theG3588 landG1093, butG1161 they sightedG2657 aG5100 bayG2859 withG2192 a sandy beachG123, whereG1519G3739 they decidedG1011 to runG1856 theG3588 ship agroundG4143 ifG1487 they couldG1410. 40Cutting awayG4014 theG3588 anchorsG45, they leftG1439 them inG1519 theG3588 seaG2281 asG260 they loosenedG447 theG3588 ropesG2202 that held theG3588 ruddersG4079. ThenG2532 they hoistedG1869 theG3588 foresailG736 to theG3588 wind and madeG2722 forG1519 theG3588 beachG123. 41ButG1161 theG3588 shipG3491 struckG4045G1519 a sandbarG5117G1337 and ran agroundG2027. TheG3588 bowG4408 stuck fastG2043 and would not moveG3306G761, andG1161 theG3588 sternG4403 was being broken upG3089 byG5259 theG3588 poundingG970 of theG3588 wavesG2949.
TheG3588 soldiersG4757 plannedG1012 toG2443 killG615 theG3588 prisonersG1202 so noneG3361 of themG5100 could swimG1579 to freedomG1309. 43ButG1161 theG3588 centurionG1543, wantingG1014 to spareG1295 Paul’sG3972 life, thwartedG2967 theirG846 planG3588G1013. He commandedG2753 thoseG3588 who couldG1410 swimG2860 to jump overboardG641 firstG4413 and getG1826 toG1909 landG1093. 44TheG3588 restG3062 were to follow onG1909 planksG4548 andG1161 various partsG5100 ofG575 theG3588 shipG4143. In this wayG3779G1096 everyoneG3956 was brought safelyG1295 toG1909 landG1093.
