Acts 18

(1 Corinthians 1:1–3; 2 Corinthians 1:1–2)

1AfterG3326 thisG3778, Paul leftG5563G1537 AthensG116 and wentG2064 toG1519 CorinthG2882. 2There he foundG2147 aG5100 JewG2453 namedG3686 AquilaG207, a nativeG1085 of PontusG4193, who had recentlyG4373 comeG2064 fromG575 ItalyG2482 withG2532 hisG846 wifeG1135 PriscillaG4252 becauseG1223 ClaudiusG2804 had orderedG1299 allG3956 theG3588 JewsG2453 to leaveG5563G575 RomeG4516. Paul wentG4334 to visit themG846, 3andG2532 he stayedG3306 andG2532 workedG2038 withG3844 themG846 becauseG1223 they wereG1510 tentmakersG4635 by tradeG3588G5078, just as he wasG1510.

EveryG3956 SabbathG4521 he reasonedG1256 inG1722 theG3588 synagogueG4864, trying to persuadeG3982 JewsG2453 andG2532 GreeksG1672 alikeG5037. 5AndG1161 whenG5613 SilasG4609 andG2532 TimothyG5095 came downG2718 fromG575 MacedoniaG3109, PaulG3972 devoted himself fullyG4912 to theG3588 wordG3056, testifyingG1263 to theG3588 JewsG2453 that JesusG2424 isG1510 theG3588 ChristG5547. 6ButG1161 when theyG846 opposedG498 andG2532 insultedG987 him, he shook outG1621 his garmentsG2440 and toldG2036G4314 themG846, “YourG4771 bloodG129 be onG1909 yourG4771 own headsG2776! IG1473 am innocentG2513 of it. FromG575 now onG3568 I will goG4198 toG1519 theG3588 GentilesG1484.”

7So Paul leftG3327G1564 theG3588 synagogueG4864 and wentG1525 next doorG4927 toG1519 the houseG3614 ofG5100 TitusG5103 JustusG2459,1 a worshiperG4576 of GodG2316. 8CrispusG2921, theG3588 synagogue leaderG752, andG4862 hisG846 wholeG3650 householdG3624 believedG4100 in theG3588 LordG2962. AndG2532 manyG4183 of theG3588 CorinthiansG2881 who heardG191 the message believedG4100 andG2532 were baptizedG907.

9OneG1161G1722 nightG3571 theG3588 LordG2962 spokeG2036 to PaulG3972 inG1223 a visionG3705: “Do notG3361 be afraidG5399; keep on speakingG2980; do notG3361 be silentG4623. 10ForG1360 IG1473 amG1510 withG3326 youG4771 andG2532 no oneG3762 will lay a hand onG2007G4771G3588G2559 youG4771, becauseG1360 I haveG1510G1473 manyG4183 peopleG2992 inG1722 thisG3778 cityG4172.” 11So Paul stayedG2523 for a yearG1763 andG2532 a half, teachingG1321 theG3588 wordG3056 of GodG2316 amongG1722 the Corinthians.

Paul before Gallio

12While GallioG1058 wasG1510 proconsulG446 ofG3588 AchaiaG882, theG3588 JewsG2453 coordinated anG3661 attackG2721 on PaulG3972 andG2532 broughtG71 himG846 beforeG1909 theG3588 judgment seatG968. 13“ThisG3778 man is persuadingG374 theG3588 people to worshipG4576 GodG2316 in ways contrary toG3844 theG3588 lawG3551,” they saidG3004.

14ButG1161 just as PaulG3972 was aboutG3195 to speakG455G3588G4750, GallioG1058 toldG2036G4314 theG3588 JewsG2453, “IfG1487 this matter involvedG1510 aG5100 wrongdoingG92 orG2228 viciousG4190 crimeG4467, OG5599 JewsG2453, it would be reasonableG2596G3056 for me to hearG302G430 yourG4771 complaint. 15ButG1161 sinceG1487 it isG1510 a disputeG2213 aboutG4012 wordsG3056 andG2532 namesG3686 andG2532 your ownG3588G2596G4771 lawG3551, settleG3708 it yourselvesG846. IG1473 refuseG1014G3756 to beG1510 a judgeG2923 of such thingsG3778.” 16AndG2532 he droveG556 them awayG846 fromG575 theG3588 judgment seatG968.

17At thisG1161, the crowdG39562 seizedG1949 SosthenesG4988 theG3588 synagogue leaderG752 and beatG5180 him in front ofG1715 theG3588 judgment seatG968. But noneG3762 of thisG3778 was of concernG3199 to GallioG1058.

Paul Returns to Antioch

PaulG3972 remainedG4357 in Corinth for quiteG2425 someG2089 timeG2250 before saying goodbyeG657 to theG3588 brothersG80. He hadG3588 his headG2776 shavedG2751 inG1722 CenchreaG2747 to keepG1063 a vowG2171 he hadG2192 made, and then he sailedG1602 forG1519 SyriaG4947, accompanied byG2532G4862 PriscillaG4252 andG2532 AquilaG207.

19When they reachedG2658G1519 EphesusG2181, Paul leftG2641G847 Priscilla and Aquila. He himselfG846 wentG1525 intoG1519 theG3588 synagogueG4864 there and reasonedG1256 with theG3588 JewsG2453. 20When theyG846 askedG2065 him to stayG3306 forG1909 a while longerG4119G5550, he declinedG3756G1962. 21ButG235 as he leftG657, he saidG2036, “I will come backG3825G3443 toG4314 youG4771 if GodG2316 is willingG2309.” And he set sailG321 fromG575 EphesusG2181.

22When Paul had landedG2718 atG1519 CaesareaG2542, he went upG305 andG2532 greetedG782 theG3588 churchG1577 at Jerusalem.4 Then he went downG2597 toG1519 AntiochG490.

Paul’s Third Missionary Journey Begins

(Acts 13:1–3; Acts 15:36–41)

23After Paul had spentG4160 someG5100 timeG5550 in Antioch, he traveledG1831 from place to placeG2517 throughoutG1330 theG3588 regionG5561 of GalatiaG1054 andG2532 PhrygiaG5435, strengtheningG1991 allG3956 theG3588 disciplesG3101.

24MeanwhileG1161 aG5100 JewG2453 namedG3686 ApollosG625, a nativeG1085 of AlexandriaG221, cameG2658 toG1519 EphesusG2181. He wasG1510 an eloquentG3052 manG435, well versedG1415 inG1722 theG3588 ScripturesG1124. 25HeG3778 had beenG1510 instructed inG2727 theG3588 wayG3598 of theG3588 LordG2962 andG2532 was ferventG2204 in spiritG4151. He spokeG2980 andG2532 taughtG1321 accuratelyG199 aboutG4012 JesusG2424,5 though he knewG1987 onlyG3440 theG3588 baptismG908 of JohnG2491. 26AndG5037 heG3778 beganG756 to speak boldlyG3955 inG1722 theG3588 synagogueG4864. When PriscillaG4252 andG2532 AquilaG207 heardG191 himG846, they took him asideG4355G846 andG2532 explainedG1620 to himG846 theG3588 wayG3598 ofG3588 GodG2316 more accuratelyG199.

27When Apollos resolvedG1014 to cross overG1330 toG1519 AchaiaG882, theG3588 brothersG80 encouragedG4389 him and wroteG1125 to theG3588 disciplesG3101 there to welcomeG588 himG846. On his arrivalG3854G3739, he was a greatG4183 helpG4820 to those whoG3588 byG1223 graceG5485 had believedG4100. 28ForG1063 he powerfullyG2159 refutedG1246 theG3588 JewsG2453 in publicG1219 debate, provingG1925 fromG1223 theG3588 ScripturesG1124 that JesusG2424 isG1510 theG3588 ChristG5547.
