The Crown of Thorns
1SoG3767 PilateG4091 thenG5119 tookG2983 JesusG2424 and 12had Him floggedG3146. 23And the soldiersG4757 twistedG4120 togetherG4120 a crownG4735 of thornsG173 and placedG2007 it onG2007 His headG2776, and putG4016 a purpleG4210 4cloakG2440 onG4016 Him; 3and they repeatedly cameG2064 up to Him and saidG3004, “5HailG5463, KingG935 of the JewsG2453!” and 6slappedG1325G4475 Him in the faceG4475 again and again. 4And then PilateG4091 7cameG1831 outG1831 againG3825 and saidG3004 to them, “SeeG2396, I am bringingG71 Him out to you soG2443 thatG2443 you will knowG1097 that 8I findG2147 noG3762 groundsG156 atG3762 allG3762 for chargesG156 in 9His case.” 5JesusG2424 thenG3767 cameG1831 outG1831, 10wearingG5409 the crownG4735 of thornsG174 and the purpleG4210 robeG2440. And Pilate saidG3004 to them, “BeholdG2400, the ManG444!” 6SoG3767 whenG3753 the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the 11officersG5257 sawG3708 Him, they shoutedG2905, sayingG3004, “CrucifyG4717, crucifyG4717!” PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “TakeG2983 Him yourselvesG4771 and crucifyG4717 Him; for 12I findG2147 noG3756 groundsG156 forG156 chargesG156 in 13His case!” 7The JewsG2453 answeredG611 him, “14We haveG2192 a lawG3551, and by that lawG3551 He oughtG3784 to dieG599, becauseG3754 He 15madeG4160 HimselfG1438 out to be the SonG5207 of GodG2316!”
8ThereforeG3767 whenG3753 PilateG4091 heardG191 thisG3778 statementG3056, he wasG5399 even moreG3123 afraidG5399; 9and he 16enteredG1525 the 17PraetoriumG4232 againG3825 and saidG3004 to JesusG2424, “WhereG4159 are You from?” But 18JesusG2424 gaveG1325 him noG3756 answerG612. 10SoG3767 PilateG4091 saidG3004 to Him, “Are you not speakingG2980 to me? Do You not knowG3609 that I haveG2192 authorityG1849 to releaseG630 You, and I haveG2192 authorityG1849 to crucifyG4717 You?” 11JesusG2424 answeredG611 him, “19You would haveG2192 noG3756G3762 authorityG1849 20overG2596 Me atG3762 allG3762, ifG1487 it had not beenG1510 givenG1325 to you from aboveG509; for thisG3778 reasonG1223 21the one who handedG3860 Me overG3860 to you hasG2192 the greaterG3173 sinG266.” 12As a resultG1537 of thisG3778, PilateG4091 22madeG2212 effortsG2212 to releaseG630 Him; but the JewsG2453 shoutedG2905, sayingG3004, “23IfG1437 you releaseG630 thisG3778 ManG3778, you are not a friendG5384 of CaesarG2541; everyoneG3956 who makesG4160 himselfG1438 out to be a kingG935 24opposesG483 CaesarG2541!”
13ThereforeG3767 when PilateG4091 heardG191 theseG3778 wordsG3056, he broughtG71 JesusG2424 out, and 25satG2523 downG2523 on the judgmentG968 seatG968 at a placeG5117 calledG3004 26The PavementG3038--but 27in 28HebrewG1447, GabbathaG1042. 14NowG1161 it was 29the dayG3904 ofG3904 preparationG3904 for the PassoverG3957; it was aboutG5613 the 3031sixthG1623 hourG5610. And he saidG3004 to the JewsG2453, “LookG2396, 32your KingG935!” 15SoG3767 they shoutedG2905, “33AwayG142 with Him, awayG142 with Him, crucifyG4717 Him!” PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “Shall I crucifyG4717 your KingG935?” The chiefG749 priestsG749 answeredG611, “We haveG2192 noG3756 kingG935 exceptG1487G3361 CaesarG2541.”
The Crucifixion
16SoG3767 he thenG5119 34handedG3860 Him overG3860 to them to be crucifiedG4717.
1735They tookG3880 JesusG2424, thereforeG3767, and He wentG1831 outG1831, 3637carryingG941 His ownG1438 crossG4716, to the place calledG3004 38the PlaceG5117 of a SkullG2898, whichG3739 39in 40HebrewG1447 is calledG3004, GolgothaG1115. 18ThereG3699 they crucifiedG4717 Him, and with Him 41twoG1417 otherG243 menG243, one onG1782 eitherG1782 sideG1782, and JesusG2424 in betweenG3319. 19NowG1161 PilateG4091 alsoG2532 wroteG1125 an inscriptionG5102 and putG5087 it on the crossG4716. It was writtenG1125: “42JESUSG2424 THE NAZARENEG3480, 43THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453.” 20ThereforeG3767 manyG4183 of the JewsG2453 readG314 thisG3778 inscriptionG5102, becauseG3754 the placeG5117 whereG3699 JesusG2424 was crucifiedG4717 was nearG1451 the cityG4172; and it was writtenG1125 44in 45HebrewG1447, LatinG4515, and in GreekG1676. 21SoG3767 the chiefG749 priestsG749 of the JewsG2453 were sayingG3004 to PilateG4091, “Do not writeG1125, ‘46The KingG935 of the JewsG2453’; ratherG235, write that He saidG3004, ‘I amG1510 47KingG935 of the JewsG2453.’” 22PilateG4091 answeredG611, “48WhatG3739 I have writtenG1125, I have writtenG1125.”
23ThenG3767 49the soldiersG4757, whenG3753 they had crucifiedG4717 JesusG2424, tookG2983 His outerG2440 garmentsG2440 and madeG4160 50fourG5064 partsG3313: a partG3313 to eachG1538 soldierG4757, and the 51tunicG5509 also; but the tunicG5509 was seamlessG690, wovenG5307 52in oneG3650 pieceG3650. 24SoG3767 they saidG3004 to oneG240 anotherG240, “53Let’s not tearG4977 it, but castG2975 lotsG2975 for it, to decide whoseG5101 it shall be.” 54This happened soG2443 thatG2443 the ScriptureG1124 would be fulfilledG4137: “They 55dividedG1266 My garmentsG2440 amongG1266 themselves, and they castG906 56lotsG2819 for My clothingG2441.” ThereforeG3767 the soldiersG4757 didG4160 theseG3778 thingsG3778.
2557NowG1161 besideG3844 the crossG4716 of JesusG2424 stoodG2476 58His motherG3384, His mother’sG3384 sisterG79, MaryG3137 the wife of ClopasG2832, and 59MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094. 26SoG3767 when JesusG2424 sawG3708 His motherG3384, and 60the discipleG3101 whomG3739 He lovedG25 standingG3936 nearbyG3936, He saidG3004 to His motherG3384, “61WomanG1135, beholdG2396, your sonG5207!” 27ThenG1534 He saidG3004 to the discipleG3101, “BeholdG2396, your motherG3384!” And from that hourG5610 the discipleG3101 tookG2983 her into 62his ownG2398 household.
28AfterG3326 thisG3778, JesusG2424, 63knowingG3609 that allG3956 thingsG3956 had alreadyG2235 been accomplishedG5055, 64inG2443 orderG2443 thatG2443 the ScriptureG1124 would be fulfilledG5048, saidG3004, “65I amG1372 thirstyG1372.” 29A jarG4632 fullG3324 of sourG3690 wineG3690 was standingG2749 there; soG3767 66they putG4060 a spongeG4699 fullG3324 of the sourG3690 wineG3690 on a branch of hyssopG5301 and broughtG4374 it up to His mouthG4750. 30ThereforeG3767 whenG3753 JesusG2424 had receivedG2983 the sourG3690 wineG3690, He saidG3004, “67It is finishedG5055!” And He bowedG2827 His headG2776 and 68gaveG3860 upG3860 His spiritG4151.
Care of the Body of Jesus
31NowG3767 thenG3767, sinceG1893 it was 69the dayG3904 ofG3904 preparationG3904, to preventG3363 70the bodiesG4983 from remainingG3306 on the crossG4716 on the SabbathG4521 (71for that SabbathG4521 was a 72highG3173 dayG2250), the JewsG2453 requestedG2065 of PilateG4091 that their legsG4628 be brokenG2608, and the bodies be takenG142 awayG142. 32SoG3767 the soldiersG4757 cameG2064 and brokeG2608 the legsG4628 of the firstG4413 manG4413, and of the otherG243 who was 73crucifiedG4957 with Him; 33but after they cameG2064 to JesusG2424, whenG5613 they sawG3708 that He was alreadyG2235 deadG2348, they did not breakG2608 His legsG4628. 34YetG235 oneG1520 of the soldiersG4757 piercedG3572 His sideG4125 with a spearG3057, and immediatelyG2117 74bloodG129 and waterG5204 cameG1831 outG1831. 35And he who has seenG3708 has 75testifiedG3140, and his testimonyG3141 is trueG228; and he knowsG3609 that he is tellingG3004 the truthG227, soG2443 thatG2443 you alsoG2532 may believeG4100. 36For theseG3778 thingsG3778 tookG1096 placeG1096 76soG2443 thatG2443 the ScriptureG1124 would be fulfilledG4137: “77Not a boneG3747 of Him shall be 78brokenG4937.” 37And againG3825 anotherG2087 ScriptureG1124 saysG3004, “79They will lookG3708 at Him whomG3739 they piercedG1574.”
38NowG1161 80afterG3326 theseG3778 thingsG3778 JosephG2501 of ArimatheaG707, beingG1510 a discipleG3101 of JesusG2424, but a 81secretG2928 one for 82fearG5401 of the 83JewsG2453, requestedG2065 of PilateG4091 that he might takeG142 awayG142 the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424; and PilateG4091 grantedG2010 permissionG2010. SoG3767 he cameG2064 and tookG142 awayG142 His bodyG4983. 3984NicodemusG3530, who had firstG4413 comeG2064 to Him by nightG3571, alsoG2532 cameG2064, 85bringingG5342 a 86mixtureG3395 of 87myrrhG4666 and aloesG250, aboutG5613 a 8889hundredG1540 litrasG3046 weight. 40SoG3767 they tookG2983 the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424 and 90boundG1210 it in 91linenG3608 wrappingsG3608 with the spicesG759, as is the burialG1779 customG1485 of the JewsG2453. 41NowG1161 in the placeG5117 whereG3699 He was crucifiedG4717 there was a gardenG2779, and in the gardenG2779 was a 92newG2537 tombG3419 93in whichG3739 noG3762 oneG3762 had yetG3764 beenG1510 laidG5087. 42ThereforeG3767 becauseG1223 of the JewishG2453 dayG3904 ofG3904 94preparationG3904, sinceG3754 the tombG3419 was 95nearbyG1451, they laidG5087 JesusG2424 thereG1563.
