John 9
Healing the Man Born Blind
1As Jesus passedG3855 by, He sawG3708 a manG444 who had been blindG5185 from birthG1079. 2And His disciplesG3101 askedG2065 Him, “1RabbiG4461, whoG5101 sinnedG264, 2thisG3778 manG3778 orG2228 his 3parentsG1118, that he would be bornG1080 blindG5185?” 3JesusG2424 answeredG611, “It was neitherG3777 that thisG3778 manG3778 sinnedG264, norG3777 his parentsG1118; but it was 4soG2443 thatG2443 the worksG2041 of GodG2316 might be displayedG5319 in him. 4We mustG1163 carryG2038 outG2038 the worksG2041 of Him who sentG3992 Me 5asG2193 longG2193 asG2193 it is dayG2250; nightG3571 is comingG2064, whenG3753 noG3762 oneG3762 canG1410 workG2038. 5WhileG3752 I amG1510 in the worldG2889, I amG1510 6the LightG5457 of the worldG2889.” 6When He had saidG3004 thisG3778, He 7spitG4429 on the groundG5476, and madeG4160 mudG4081 from the salivaG4427, and appliedG2007 the mudG4081 to his eyesG3788, 7and saidG3004 to him, “GoG5217, washG3538 in 8the poolG2861 of SiloamG4611” (whichG3739 is translatedG2059, SentG649). SoG3767 he leftG565 and 9washedG3538, and 10cameG2064 back seeingG991. 8SoG3767 the neighborsG1069, and thoseG3588 who previouslyG4387 sawG2334 11him as a beggarG4319, were sayingG3004, “Is thisG3778 not the one who used to 12sitG2521 and begG4319?” 9OthersG243 were sayingG3004, “ThisG3778 is he,” still othersG243 were sayingG3004, “NoG3780, but he is likeG3664 him.” 13The man himself kept sayingG3004, “I amG1510 the one.” 10SoG3767 they were sayingG3004 to him, “HowG4459 thenG3767 were your eyesG3788 openedG455?” 11He answeredG611, “The ManG444 who is calledG3004 JesusG2424 madeG4160 mudG4081, and spreadG2025 it onG2025 my eyesG3788, and saidG3004 to me, ‘GoG5217 to 14SiloamG4611 and washG3538’; soG3767 I wentG565 awayG565 and washedG3538, and I receivedG308 sightG308.” 12And they saidG3004 to him, “WhereG4226 is He?” He saidG3004, “I do not knowG3609.”
Controversy over the Man
13They broughtG71 15the man who was previouslyG4218 blindG5185 to the PhariseesG5330. 1416NowG1161 it was a SabbathG4521 on the dayG2250 that JesusG2424 madeG4160 the mudG4081 and openedG455 his eyesG3788. 1517ThenG3767 the PhariseesG5330 alsoG2532 were askingG2065 him againG3825 howG4459 he receivedG308 his sightG308. And he saidG3004 to them, “He appliedG2007 mudG4081 to my eyesG3788, and I washedG3538, and I seeG991.” 16ThereforeG3767 someG5100 of the PhariseesG5330 were sayingG3004, “ThisG3778 ManG444 is not from GodG2316, becauseG3754 He 18does not keepG5083 the SabbathG4521.” But othersG243 were sayingG3004, “HowG4459 canG1410 a manG444 who is a sinnerG268 performG2038 suchG5108 1920signsG4592?” And 21there was dissensionG4978 amongG1722 them. 17SoG3767 they saidG3004 22againG3825 to the manG5185 whoG5185 wasG5185 blindG5185, “WhatG5101 do you sayG3004 aboutG4012 Him, sinceG3754 He openedG455 your eyesG3788?” And he saidG3004, “He is a 23prophetG4396.”
1824The JewsG2453 thenG3767 did not believeG4100 it aboutG4012 him, that he had beenG1510 blindG5185 and had receivedG308 sightG308, untilG2193 they calledG5455 the parentsG1118 of the veryG846 oneG846 who had receivedG308 his sightG308, 19and they questionedG2065 them, sayingG3004, “Is thisG3778 your sonG5207, whoG3739 you sayG3004 was bornG1080 blindG5185? ThenG3767 howG4459 does he nowG737 seeG991?” 20His parentsG1118 thenG3767 answeredG611 and saidG3004, “We knowG3609 that thisG3778 is our sonG5207, and that he was bornG1080 blindG5185; 21but howG4459 he nowG3568 seesG991, we do not knowG3609; orG2228 whoG5101 openedG455 his eyesG3788, we do not knowG3609. AskG2065 him; he is of ageG2244, he will speakG2980 for himselfG1438.” 22His parentsG1118 saidG3004 thisG3778 becauseG3754 they 25wereG5399 afraidG5399 of the 26JewsG2453; for the JewsG2453 27had alreadyG2235 reachedG4934 theG4934 decisionG4934 that ifG1437 anyoneG5100 confessedG3670 Him to be 28ChristG5547, 29he was to be excommunicatedG656 fromG656 theG656 synagogueG656. 23It was for thisG3778 reasonG1223 that his parentsG1118 saidG3004, “30He is of ageG2244; askG2065 him.”
24SoG3767 for a secondG1208 timeG1208 they summonedG5455 the manG444 whoG3739 had beenG1510 blindG5185, and saidG3004 to him, “31GiveG1325 gloryG1391 to GodG2316; we knowG3609 that 32thisG3778 ManG444 is a sinnerG268.” 25He thenG3767 answeredG611, “WhetherG1487 He is a sinnerG268, I do not knowG3609; oneG1520 thingG1520 I do knowG3609, that though I was blindG5185, nowG737 I seeG991.” 26SoG3767 they saidG3004 to him, “WhatG5101 did He doG4160 to you? HowG4459 did He openG455 your eyesG3788?” 27He answeredG611 them, “33I toldG3004 you alreadyG2235 and you did not 34listenG191; whyG5101 do you wantG2309 to hearG191 it againG3825? You do not wantG2309 to becomeG1096 His disciplesG3101 tooG2532, do you?” 28They spokeG3058 abusivelyG3058 to him and saidG3004, “You are His discipleG3101, but 35we are disciplesG3101 of MosesG3475. 29We knowG3609 that GodG2316 has spokenG2980 to MosesG3475, but as for thisG3778 ManG3778, 36we do not knowG3609 whereG4159 He is from.” 30The manG444 answeredG611 and saidG3004 to them, “WellG1063, hereG1722G3778 is the amazingG2298 thingG2298, that you do not knowG3609 whereG4159 He is from, and yet He openedG455 my eyesG3788! 31We knowG3609 that 37GodG2316 does not listenG191 to sinnersG268; but ifG1437 someoneG5100 is 38God-fearingG2318 and doesG4160 His willG2307, He listensG191 to him. 3239SinceG1537 the beginningG165 ofG165 timeG165 it has neverG3756 been heardG191 that anyoneG5100 openedG455 the eyesG3788 of a personG5185 bornG1080 blindG5185. 3340IfG1487 thisG3778 ManG3778 were not from GodG2316, He couldG1410 doG4160 nothingG3756G3762.” 34They answeredG611 him, “41You were bornG1080 entirelyG3650 in sinsG266, and yet you are teachingG1321 us?” SoG2532 they 4243putG1544 him outG1544.
Jesus Affirms His Deity
35JesusG2424 heardG191 that they had 4445putG1544 him outG1544, and upon findingG2147 him, He saidG3004, “Do you believeG4100 in the 46SonG5207 of ManG444?” 36He answeredG611 47by sayingG3004, “And 48whoG5101 is He, 49SirG2962, that I may believeG4100 in Him?” 37JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “You have bothG2532 seenG3708 Him, and 50He is the One who is talkingG2980 with you.” 38And he saidG5346, “I believeG4100, LordG2962.” And he 51worshipedG4352 Him. 39And JesusG2424 saidG3004, “52For judgmentG2917 I cameG2064 into thisG3778 worldG2889, soG2443 thatG2443 53thoseG3588 who do not seeG991 may seeG991, and 54thoseG3588 who seeG991 may becomeG1096 blindG5185.” 40ThoseG3588 who were with Him from the PhariseesG5330 heardG191 theseG3778 thingsG3778 and saidG3004 to Him, “55We are not blindG5185 tooG2532, are we?” 41JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “56IfG1487 you were blindG5185, you would haveG2192 noG3756 sinG266; but nowG3568 that you maintainG3004, ‘57We seeG991,’ your sinG266 remainsG3306.
