John 5
The Healing at Bethesda
1AfterG3326 theseG3778 thingsG3778 there was 1a feastG1859 of the JewsG2453, and JesusG2424 wentG305 upG305 to JerusalemG2414.
2NowG1161 in JerusalemG2414, by 2the SheepG4262 Gate, there is a poolG2861 which 3in 4HebrewG1447 is calledG1951 5BethesdaG964, havingG2192 fiveG4002 6porticoesG4745. 3In theseG3778 porticoes layG2621 a multitudeG4128 of thoseG3588 who were sickG770, blindG5185, limpingG5560, or 7paralyzedG3584.8 5NowG1161 a manG444 was thereG1563 who had beenG2192 9illG769 for thirty-eightG5144G3638 yearsG2094. 6JesusG2424, upon seeingG3708 thisG3778 manG3778 lyingG2621 there and knowingG1097 that he had alreadyG2235 beenG2192 in that condition for a longG4183 timeG5550, saidG3004 to him, “Do you wantG2309 to getG1096 wellG5199?” 7The sickG770 man answeredG611 Him, “SirG2962, I haveG2192 noG3756 manG444 to putG906 me into the poolG2861 whenG3752 the waterG5204 is stirredG5015 up, but whileG1722G3739 I am comingG2064, anotherG243 stepsG2597 downG2597 beforeG4253 me.” 8JesusG2424 saidG3004 to him, “10GetG1453 upG1453, pickG142 upG142 your palletG2895 and walkG4043.” 9ImmediatelyG2112 the manG444 becameG1096 wellG5199, and pickedG142 upG142 his palletG2895 and began to walkG4043.
11NowG1161 it was a SabbathG4521 on that dayG2250. 10SoG3767 12the JewsG2453 were sayingG3004 to the man who was curedG2323, “It is a SabbathG4521, and 13it is not permissibleG1832 for you to carryG142 your palletG2895.” 11But he answeredG611 them, “He who madeG4160 me wellG5199 was the oneG1565 who saidG3004 to me, ‘PickG142 upG142 your palletG2895 and walkG4043.’” 12They askedG2065 him, “WhoG5101 is the ManG444 who saidG3004 to you, ‘PickG142 it upG142 and walkG4043’?” 13But the man who was healedG2390 did not knowG3609 whoG5101 it was, for JesusG2424 had slippedG1593 awayG1593 while there was a crowdG3793 in that placeG5117. 14AfterwardG3326G3778, JesusG2424 foundG2147 him in the templeG2413 and saidG3004 to him, “BeholdG2396, you have becomeG1096 wellG5199; do not 14sinG264 anymoreG3371, 15soG2443 thatG2443 nothingG3361G5100 worseG5501 happensG1096 to you.” 15The manG444 wentG565 awayG565, and informedG3004 16the JewsG2453 that it was JesusG2424 who had madeG4160 him wellG5199. 16For thisG3778 reasonG1223 17the JewsG2453 were persecutingG1377 JesusG2424, becauseG3754 He was doingG4160 theseG3778 thingsG3778 on a SabbathG4521. 17But He answeredG611 them, “My FatherG3962 18is workingG2038 untilG2193 nowG737, and I MyselfG1473 am workingG2038.”
Jesus’ Equality with God
18For thisG3778 reasonG1223 thereforeG3767 19the JewsG2453 20were seekingG2212 all the moreG3123 to killG615 Him, becauseG3754 He not onlyG3440 was breakingG3089 the SabbathG4521, but alsoG2532 was callingG3004 GodG2316 His ownG2398 FatherG3962, 21makingG4160 HimselfG1438 equalG2470 with GodG2316.
19ThereforeG3767 JesusG2424 answeredG611 and was sayingG3004 to them, “TrulyG281, trulyG281, I sayG3004 to you, 22the SonG5207 canG1410 doG4160 nothingG3756G3762 of HimselfG1438, unlessG302G3361 it is somethingG5100 He seesG991 the FatherG3962 doingG4160; for whateverG3739G302 23the FatherG3962 doesG4160, theseG3778 thingsG3778 the SonG5207 alsoG2532 doesG4160 in the sameG3668 wayG3668. 2024For the FatherG3962 lovesG5368 the SonG5207 and showsG1166 Him allG3956 thingsG3956 that He HimselfG846 is doingG4160; and the Father will showG1166 Him 25greaterG3173 worksG2041 than theseG3778, soG2443 thatG2443 you will beG2296 amazedG2296. 21For justG5618 as the FatherG3962 raisesG1453 the deadG3498 and 26givesG2227 them lifeG2227, soG3779 27the SonG5207 alsoG2532 givesG2227 lifeG2227 toG2227 whomG3739 He wishesG2309. 22For not evenG3761 the FatherG3962 judgesG2919 anyoneG3762, but 28He has givenG1325 allG3956 judgmentG2920 to the SonG5207, 23soG2443 thatG2443 allG3956 will honorG5091 the SonG5207 justG2531 asG2531 they honorG5091 the FatherG3962. 29The one who does not honorG5091 the SonG5207 does not honorG5091 the FatherG3962 who sentG3992 Him.
24“TrulyG281, trulyG281, I sayG3004 to you, the one who hearsG191 My wordG3056, and 30believesG4100 Him who sentG3992 Me, hasG2192 eternalG166 lifeG2222, and 31does not comeG2064 into judgmentG2920, but has 32passedG3327 out of deathG2288 into lifeG2222.
Two Resurrections
25TrulyG281, trulyG281, I sayG3004 to you, 3334a timeG5610 is comingG2064 and 35even nowG3568 has arrivedG1510, whenG3753 36the deadG3498 will hearG191 the voiceG5456 of the SonG5207 of GodG2316, and thoseG3588 who 37hearG191 will liveG2198. 26For justG5618 as the FatherG3962 hasG2192 lifeG2222 in HimselfG1438, soG3779 He 38gaveG1325 to the SonG5207 alsoG2532 to haveG2192 lifeG2222 in HimselfG1438; 27and He gaveG1325 Him authorityG1849 to 39executeG4160 judgmentG2920, becauseG3754 He is 40the SonG5207 of ManG444. 28Do not beG2296 amazedG2296 at thisG3778; for 4142a timeG5610 is comingG2064 whenG1722G3739 43allG3956 whoG3588 are in the tombsG3419 will hearG191 His voiceG5456, 29and will comeG1607 outG1607: 44thoseG3588 who didG4160 the goodG18 deeds to a resurrectionG386 of lifeG2222, thoseG3588 who committedG4238 the badG5337 deeds to a resurrectionG386 of judgmentG2920.
30“45I canG1410 doG4160 nothingG3756G3762 46on My ownG1683. As I hearG191, I judgeG2919; and 47My judgmentG2920 is 48righteousG1342, becauseG3754 I do not seekG2212 My ownG1699 willG2307 but 49the willG2307 of Him who sentG3992 Me.
31“50IfG1437 I alone testifyG3140 aboutG4012 MyselfG1683, My testimonyG3141 is not 51trueG227. 32There is 52anotherG243 who testifiesG3140 aboutG4012 Me, and I knowG3609 that the testimonyG3141 whichG3739 He givesG3140 aboutG4012 Me is trueG227.
Testimony of John the Baptist
33You have sentG649 messengers to JohnG2491, and he 53has testifiedG3140 to the truthG225. 34But 54the testimonyG3141 I receiveG2983 is not from manG444, but I sayG3004 theseG3778 thingsG3778 soG2443 thatG2443 you may be savedG4982. 35He was 55the lampG3088 that was burningG2545 and shiningG5316, and you 56were willingG2309 to rejoiceG21 for 57a whileG5610 in his lightG5457.
Testimony of Works
36But the testimonyG3141 I haveG2192 is greaterG3173 than the testimony of JohnG2491; for 58the worksG2041 whichG3739 the FatherG3962 has givenG1325 Me 59to accomplishG5048--the veryG846 worksG2041 that I doG4160--testifyG3140 aboutG4012 Me, that the FatherG3962 60has sentG649 Me.
Testimony of the Father
37And the FatherG3962 who sentG3992 Me, 61He has testifiedG3140 aboutG4012 Me. You have neitherG3777 heardG191 His voiceG5456 at anyG4455 timeG4455, norG3777 seenG3708 His formG1491. 38AlsoG2532 you do not haveG2192 62His wordG3056 remainingG3306 in you, becauseG3754 you do not believeG4100 Him whomG3739 He 63sentG649.
Testimony of the Scripture
396465You examineG2038 the ScripturesG1124 becauseG3754 you thinkG1380 that in them you haveG2192 eternalG166 lifeG2222; and it is 66thoseG1565 very Scriptures that testifyG3140 aboutG4012 Me; 40and yet you are unwillingG3756G2309 to comeG2064 to Me soG2443 thatG2443 you may haveG2192 lifeG2222. 4167I do not receiveG2983 gloryG1391 from peopleG444; 42but I knowG1097 you, that you do not haveG2192 the loveG26 of GodG2316 in yourselvesG1438. 43I have comeG2064 in My Father’sG3962 nameG3686, and you do not 68receiveG2983 Me; 69ifG1437 anotherG243 comesG2064 in his ownG2398 nameG3686, you will 70receiveG2983 him. 44HowG4459 canG1410 you believeG4100, when you 7172acceptG2983 73gloryG1391 from oneG240 anotherG240 and you do not seekG2212 74the 75gloryG1391 that is from 76the one and onlyG3441 GodG2316? 45Do not thinkG1380 that I will accuseG2723 you beforeG4314 the FatherG3962; the one who accusesG2723 you is 77MosesG3475, in whomG3739 you have putG1679 your hopeG1679. 46For ifG1487 you believedG4100 MosesG3475, you would believeG4100 Me; for 78he wroteG1125 aboutG4012 Me. 47But 79ifG1487 you do not believeG4100 his writingsG1121, howG4459 will you believeG4100 My wordsG4487?”
