Acts 17:4-34
41And someG5100 of them were persuadedG3982 and joinedG4345 2PaulG3972 and SilasG4609, 3alongG5037 withG5037 a largeG4183 numberG4128 of the 4God-fearingG4576 5GreeksG1672 and 6a significantG3756G3641 numberG3756G3641 of the 7leadingG4413 womenG1135. 5But 8the JewsG2453, becomingG2206 jealousG2206 and takingG4355 alongG4355 someG5100 wickedG4190 menG435 from the marketplaceG60, formedG3792 aG3792 mobG3792 and setG2350 the cityG4172 inG2350 anG2350 uproarG2350; and they attackedG2186 the houseG3614 of 9JasonG2394 and were seekingG2212 to bringG4254 them outG4254 to the peopleG1218. 6When they did not findG2147 them, they began 10draggingG4951 JasonG2394 and someG5100 brothersG80 beforeG1909 the cityG4173 authoritiesG4173, shoutingG994, “TheseG3778 menG3778 who have upsetG387 1112the worldG3625 have comeG3918 hereG1759 alsoG2532; 713and JasonG2394 14has welcomedG5264 them, and they allG3956 actG4238 15contraryG561 to the decreesG1378 of CaesarG2541, sayingG3004 that there is anotherG2087 kingG935, JesusG2424.” 8They stirredG5015 up the crowdG3793 and the cityG4173 authoritiesG4173 who heardG191 theseG3778 thingsG3778. 9And when they had receivedG2983 a 16pledgeG2425 from 17JasonG2394 and the othersG3062, they releasedG630 them.
1018The brothersG80 immediatelyG2112 sentG1599 19PaulG3972 and SilasG4609 awayG1599 by nightG3571 to 20BereaG960, 21and when they arrivedG3854, they wentG549 into 22the synagogueG4864 of the JewsG2453. 11NowG1161 theseG3778 peopleG3778 were more noble-mindedG2104 than thoseG3588 in 23ThessalonicaG2332, 24for they receivedG1209 the wordG3056 with 25greatG3956 eagernessG4288, examiningG350 the ScripturesG1124 dailyG2596G2250 to see whetherG1487 theseG3778 thingsG3778 were soG3779. 12ThereforeG3767, 26manyG4183 of them believedG4100, 27alongG2532 with a significantG3756G3641 numberG3756G3641 of 28prominentG2158 GreekG1674 29womenG1135 and menG435. 13But whenG5613 the JewsG2453 of 30ThessalonicaG2332 foundG1097 outG1097 that the wordG3056 of GodG2316 had been proclaimedG2605 by PaulG3972 in 31BereaG960 alsoG2532, they cameG2064 thereG2546 asG2546 wellG2546, agitatingG4531 and stirringG5015 up the crowdsG3793. 14ThenG5119 immediatelyG2112 32the brothersG80 sentG1821 PaulG3972 outG1821 to goG4198 asG2193 farG2193 asG2193 the seaG2281; and 33SilasG4609 and 34TimothyG5095 remainedG5278 thereG1563. 15NowG1161 35thoseG3588 who escortedG2525 PaulG3972 broughtG71 him asG2193 farG2193 asG2193 36AthensG116; and receivingG2983 a commandG1785 for 37SilasG4609 and TimothyG5095 to 38comeG2064 to him as soonG5030 asG5030 possibleG5030, they leftG1826.
16NowG1161 while PaulG3972 was waitingG1551 forG1551 them in 39AthensG116, his spiritG4151 was being provokedG3947 withinG1722 him as he observedG2334 that the cityG4172 was fullG2712 ofG2712 idolsG2712. 17SoG3767 he was reasoningG1256 40in the synagogueG4864 with the JewsG2453 and 41the God-fearingG4576 Gentiles, and in the marketplaceG58 everyG3956 dayG2250 with thoseG3588 who happenedG3909 toG3909 beG3909 presentG3909. 18And someG5100 of the EpicureanG1946 and StoicG4770 philosophersG5386 asG2532 wellG2532 were 42conversingG4820 with him. SomeG5100 were sayingG3004, “WhatG5101 could 43thisG3778 44scavengerG4691 ofG4691 tidbitsG4691 wantG2309 to sayG3004?” OthersG3588G1161, “He seemsG1380 to be a proclaimerG2604 of strangeG3581 deitiesG1140,”--becauseG3754 he was preachingG2097 45JesusG2424 and the resurrectionG386. 19And they 46tookG1949 him and broughtG71 him 47to the 4849AreopagusG697, sayingG3004, “MayG1410 we knowG1097 whatG5101 50thisG3778 newG2537 teachingG1322 is 51which you are proclaimingG2980? 20For you are bringingG1533 someG5100 strangeG3579 thingsG3579 to our earsG189; soG3767 we wantG1014 to knowG1097 whatG5101 theseG3778 thingsG3778 meanG2309G1510.” 21(NowG1161 allG3956 the AtheniansG117 and the strangersG3581 52visitingG1927 there used to spendG2119 their timeG2119 in nothingG3762 otherG2087 thanG2228 tellingG3004 orG2228 hearingG191 somethingG5100 newG2537.)
22SoG1161 PaulG3972 stoodG2476 in the midstG3319 of the 53AreopagusG697 and saidG5346, “MenG435 of 54AthensG117, I seeG2334 that you are veryG1175 55religiousG1175 in allG3956 respectsG3956. 23For while I was passingG1330 throughG1330 and examiningG333 the 56objectsG4574 ofG4574 your worshipG4574, I alsoG2532 foundG2147 an altarG1041 with thisG3739 inscriptionG1924, ‘TO AN UNKNOWNG57 GODG2316.’ ThereforeG3767, whatG3739 57you worshipG2151 in ignoranceG50, thisG3778 I proclaimG2605 to you. 2458The GodG2316 who madeG4160 the worldG2889 and everythingG3956 that is in it, since He is 59LordG2962 of heavenG3772 and earthG1093, does not 60dwellG2730 in templesG3485 madeG5499 byG5499 handsG5499; 25norG3761 is He servedG2323 by humanG442 handsG5495, 61as though He neededG4326 anythingG5100, since He HimselfG846 givesG1325 to allG3956 people lifeG2222 and breathG4157 and allG3956 thingsG3956; 26and 62He madeG4160 from oneG1520 man everyG3956 nationG1484 of mankindG444 to liveG2730 on allG3956 the faceG4383 of the earthG1093, having 63determinedG3724 their appointedG4367 timesG2540 and the boundariesG3734 of their habitationG2733, 27that they would seekG2212 GodG2316, ifG1487 perhapsG686 they might feelG5584 aroundG5584 for Him and findG2147 Him, 64thoughG2532G1065 He is not farG3112 from eachG1538 oneG1520 of us; 28for 65in Him we liveG2198 and moveG2795 and 66existG1510, as evenG2532 someG5100 of your own poetsG4163 have saidG3004, ‘For we alsoG2532 are His descendantsG1085.’ 29ThereforeG3767, sinceG3767 we are the descendantsG1085 of GodG2316, we 67oughtG3784 not to thinkG3543 that the DivineG2304 Nature is likeG3664 goldG5557 orG2228 silverG696 orG2228 stoneG3037, an imageG5480 formedG5480 by humanG444 skillG5078 and thoughtG1761. 30SoG3767 having 68overlookedG5237 69the timesG5550 of ignoranceG52, GodG2316 is 70nowG3568 proclaimingG518 to mankindG444 that allG3956 peopleG3956 everywhereG3837 are to repentG3340, 31becauseG2530 He has setG2476 71a dayG2250 on whichG3739 72He willG3195 judgeG2919 7374the worldG3625 in righteousnessG1343 75throughG1722 a ManG435 whomG3739 He has 76appointedG3724, having furnishedG3930 proofG4102 to allG3956 peopleG3956 77by 78raisingG450 Him from the deadG3498.”
32NowG1161 when they heardG191 of 79the resurrectionG386 of the deadG3498, someG3588G3303 began to scoffG5512, but othersG3588 saidG3004, “We shall hearG191 from you 80againG2532G3825 concerningG4012 thisG3778.” 33SoG3779 PaulG3972 wentG1831 outG1831 from amongG3319 them. 34But someG5100 menG435 joinedG2853 him and believedG4100, amongG1722 whomG3739 alsoG2532 were DionysiusG1354 the 81AreopagiteG698 and a womanG1135 namedG3686 DamarisG1152, and othersG2087 with them.
