Fate of Ananias and Sapphira

1But a manG435 namedG3686 AnaniasG367, with his wifeG1135 SapphiraG4551, soldG4453 a pieceG2933 ofG2933 propertyG2933, 2and 1keptG3557 backG3557 some of the 2proceedsG5092 for himself, with his wife’sG1135 3fullG4924 knowledgeG4924, and bringingG5342 a portionG3313 of it, he 4laidG5087 it at the apostles’G652 feetG4228. 3But PeterG4074 saidG3004, “AnaniasG367, whyG1223G5101 has 5SatanG4567 filledG4137 your heartG2588 to lieG5574 6to the HolyG40 SpiritG4151 and to 7keepG3557 backG3557 some of the 8proceedsG5092 of the landG5564? 4While it remainedG3306 unsold, did it not remainG3306 your own? And after it was soldG4097, was it not 9underG1722 your controlG1849? WhyG5101 is it that you have 10conceivedG5087 thisG3778 deedG4229 in your heartG2588? You have not liedG5574 to menG444, but 11to GodG2316.” 5And as he heardG191 theseG3778 wordsG3056, AnaniasG367 12collapsedG4098 and 13diedG1634; and 14greatG3173 fearG5401 cameG1096 overG1909 allG3956 who heardG191 about it. 6The youngG3501 menG3501 gotG450 upG450 and 15coveredG4958 him upG4958, and after carryingG1627 him outG1627, they buriedG2290 him.

7NowG1161 an intervalG1292 of aboutG5613 threeG5140 hoursG5610 elapsedG1096, and his wifeG1135 cameG1525 inG1525, not knowingG3609 what had happenedG1096. 8And PeterG4074 respondedG611 to her, “TellG3004 me whetherG1487 you soldG591 the landG5564 16for 17thisG5118 priceG5118?” And she saidG3004, “YesG3483, for 18thatG5118 priceG5118.” 9ThenG1161 PeterG4074 said to her, “WhyG5101 is it that you have agreedG4856 togetherG4856 to 19putG3985 20the SpiritG4151 of the LordG2962 toG3985 theG3985 testG3985? BeholdG2400, the feetG4228 of thoseG3588 who have buriedG2290 your husbandG435 are at the doorG2374, and they will carryG1627 you outG1627 as well.” 10And immediatelyG3916 she 21collapsedG4098 at his feetG4228 and 22diedG1634; and the youngG3495 menG3495 cameG1525 inG1525 and foundG2147 her deadG3498, and they carriedG1627 her outG1627 and buriedG2290 her besideG4314 her husbandG435. 11And 23greatG3173 fearG5401 cameG1096 overG1909 the wholeG3650 churchG1577, and overG1909 allG3956 who heardG191 about theseG3778 thingsG3778.

1224At the handsG5495 of the apostlesG652 manyG4183 2526signsG4592 and wondersG5059 were takingG1096 placeG1096 amongG1722 the peopleG2992; and they were allG3956 27togetherG3661 in 28Solomon’sG4672 29porticoG4745. 13But noneG3762 of the restG3062 daredG5111 to associateG2853 with them; howeverG235, 30the peopleG2992 heldG3170 them inG3170 highG3170 esteemG3170. 14And increasinglyG3123 31believersG4100 in the LordG2962, largeG4128 numbersG4128 of menG435 and womenG1135, were being 32addedG4369 to their number, 15toG5620 suchG5620 anG5620 extentG5620 thatG5620 they evenG2532 carriedG1627 the sickG772 outG1627 into the streetsG4116 and laidG5087 them on cotsG2825 and palletsG2895, soG2443 thatG2443 when PeterG4074 cameG2064 by 33atG2579 leastG2579 his shadowG4639 might fallG1982 on anyG5100 of them. 16The 34peopleG4128 from the citiesG4172 in the vicinityG4038 of JerusalemG2419 were comingG4905 togetherG4905 asG2532 wellG2532, bringingG5342 people who were sickG772 35orG2532 tormentedG3791 with uncleanG169 spiritsG4151, and they were allG537 being healedG2323.

Imprisonment and Release

17But the highG749 priestG749 stoodG450 upG450, alongG2532 with allG3956 his associatesG4862 (that is 36the sectG139 of 37the SadduceesG4523), and they were filledG4092 with jealousyG2205. 18They laidG1911 handsG5495 on the apostlesG652 and 38putG5087 them in a publicG1219 prisonG5084. 19But duringG1223 the nightG3571 39an angelG32 of the LordG2962 openedG455 the gatesG2374 of the prisonG5438, and leadingG1806 them outG1806, he saidG3004, 20“GoG4198, standG2476 and 40speakG2980 to the peopleG2992 in the templeG2413 area 4142the wholeG3956 messageG4487 of thisG3778 LifeG2222.” 21Upon hearingG191 this, they enteredG1525 into the templeG2413 area 43aboutG5259 daybreakG3722 and began to teachG1321.

NowG1161 when 44the highG749 priestG749 and his associatesG4862 cameG1525, they calledG4779 45the 46CouncilG4892 togetherG4779, that is, allG3956 the SenateG1087 of the sonsG5207 of IsraelG2474, and sentG649 orders to the prisonG1201 for them to be broughtG71. 22But 47the officersG5257 who cameG3854 did not findG2147 them in the prisonG5438; and they returnedG390 and reportedG518, 23sayingG3004, “We foundG2147 the prisonG1201 lockedG2808 quiteG3956 securelyG803 and the guardsG5441 standingG2476 at the doorsG2374; but when we openedG455 them, we foundG2147 noG3762 oneG3762 insideG2080.” 24NowG1161 whenG5613 48the captainG4755 of the templeG2413 guard and the chiefG749 priestsG749 heardG191 theseG3778 wordsG3056, they were greatlyG1280 perplexedG1280 aboutG4012 them as to whatG5101 49would comeG1096 of thisG3778. 25But someoneG5100 cameG3854 and reportedG518 to them, “The menG435 whomG3739 you putG5087 in prisonG5438 are standingG2476 in the templeG2413 area and teachingG1321 the peopleG2992!” 26ThenG5119 50the captainG4755 wentG565 alongG565 with 51the officersG5257 and proceeded to bringG71 them back withoutG3756G3326 violenceG970 (for 52they wereG5399 afraidG5399 of the peopleG2992, that they might be stonedG3034).

27When they had broughtG71 them, they had them standG2476 53beforeG1722 54the CouncilG4892. The highG749 priestG749 interrogatedG1905 them, 28sayingG3004, “We gaveG3853 you 55strictG3852 ordersG3852 not to continue teachingG1321 in thisG3778 nameG3686, and 56yetG2400, you have filledG4137 JerusalemG2419 with your teachingG1322 and 57intendG1014 to bringG1863 thisG3778 Man’sG444 bloodG129 upon us.” 29But PeterG4074 and the apostlesG652 answeredG611, “58We mustG1163 obeyG3980 GodG2316 ratherG3123 thanG2228 menG444. 3059The GodG2316 of our fathersG3962 60raisedG1453 upG1453 JesusG2424, whomG3739 you 61putG1315 toG1315 deathG1315 by hangingG2910 Him on 6263a crossG3586. 3164He is the One whom GodG2316 exaltedG5312 65to His rightG1188 handG1188 as a 6667PrinceG747 and a 68SaviorG4990, to grantG1325 69repentanceG3341 to IsraelG2474, and forgivenessG859 of sinsG266. 32And we are 70witnessesG3144 71of theseG3778 thingsG4487; and 72so is the HolyG40 SpiritG4151, whomG3739 GodG2316 has givenG1325 to thoseG3588 who obeyG3980 Him.”

Gamaliel’s Counsel

33But when they heardG191 this, they becameG1282 73infuriatedG1282 and nearly decidedG1011 to executeG337 them. 34But a PhariseeG5330 namedG3686 74GamalielG1059, a 75teacherG3547 ofG3547 theG3547 LawG3547, respectedG5093 by allG3956 the peopleG2992, stoodG450 upG450 in 76the CouncilG4892 and gaveG2753 ordersG2753 to putG4160 the menG444 outsideG1854 for a shortG1024 timeG1024. 35And he saidG3004 to them, “MenG435 of IsraelG2475, beG4337 carefulG4337G1438 as to whatG5101 you areG3195 aboutG3195 toG3195 doG4238 with theseG3778 menG444. 36For, someG3778 timeG2250 agoG4253 TheudasG2333 appearedG450, 77claimingG3004 to be somebodyG5100, and a groupG706 of aboutG5613 fourG5071 hundredG5071 menG435 joinedG4346 him. 78But he was killedG337, and allG3956 whoG3745 followedG3982 him were dispersedG1262 and cameG1096 to nothingG3762. 37AfterG3326 thisG3778 manG3778, JudasG2455 of GalileeG1057 appearedG450 in the daysG2250 of 79the censusG582 and drewG868 awayG868 some peopleG2992 afterG3694 him; he alsoG2548 perishedG622, and allG3956 those whoG3745 followedG3982 him were scatteredG1287. 38And so in the presentG3568 caseG3568, I sayG3004 to you, stayG868 awayG868 from theseG3778 menG444 and leaveG863 them aloneG863, for ifG1437 the sourceG1537 of thisG3778 planG1012 orG2228 80movementG2041 81is menG444, it will be overthrownG2647; 39but ifG1487 the sourceG1537 is GodG2316, you will not be ableG1410 to overthrowG2647 them; orG3379 elseG3379 you may evenG2532 be foundG2147 82fightingG2314 againstG2314 GodG2314.”

40They followedG3982 his adviceG3982; and after callingG4341 the apostlesG652 in, they 83floggedG1194 them and orderedG3853 them not to 84speakG2980 in the nameG3686 of JesusG2424, and then releasedG630 them. 41SoG3767 they wentG4198 onG4198 their wayG4198 from the presenceG4383 of the 8586CouncilG4892, 87rejoicingG5463 that they had been consideredG2661 worthyG2661 to sufferG818 shameG818 88for His nameG3686. 4289And everyG3956 dayG2250, in the templeG2413 and 90from houseG3624 to houseG3624, they did not stopG3973 teachingG1321 and 91preachingG2097 the goodG2097 newsG2097 of JesusG2424 as the 92ChristG5547.
