1 Thessalonians 2
Paul’s Ministry
1For you yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our 12reception among you 3was not in vain, 2but after we had already suffered and been 4treated abusively in 5Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God 6to speak to you the 7gospel of God 8amid much 910opposition. 3For our 11exhortation does not come from 12error or 13impurity or 14by way of 15deceit; 416but just as we have been approved by God to be 17entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, 18not intending to please people, but to please God, who 1920examines our hearts. 5For we never came 21with flattering speech, as you know, nor with 22a pretext 23for greed--24God is our witness-- 6nor did we 25seek honor from people, either from you or from others, though 26we could have 27asserted our authority as 28apostles of Christ. 7But we 29proved to be 3031gentle 32among you. 33As a nursing mother 34tenderly cares for her own children, 8in the same way we had a fond affection for you and were delighted to 35share with you not only the 36gospel of God, but also our own 37lives, because you had become 38very dear to us.
9For you recall, brothers and sisters, our 39labor and hardship: it was by 40working night and day so as not to be a 41burden to any of you, that we proclaimed to you the 42gospel of God. 10You are witnesses, and so is 43God, of 44how devoutly and rightly and blamelessly we 45behaved toward you 46believers; 11just as you know how we were 47exhorting and encouraging and 48imploring each one of you as 49a father would his own children, 12so that you would 50walk in a manner worthy of the God who 51calls you into His own kingdom and 52glory.
13For this reason we also constantly 53thank God that when you received the 54word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it 55not as the word of mere men, but as what it really is, the word of God, 56which also is at work in you who believe. 14For you, brothers and sisters, became 57imitators of 58the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are 59in Judea, for 60you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, 61even as they did from the Jews, 1562who both killed the Lord Jesus and 63the prophets, and 64drove us out. 65They are not pleasing to God, 66but hostile to all people, 1667hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles 68so that they may be saved; with the result that they always 6970reach the limit of their sins. But 71wrath has come upon them 72fully.
17But we, brothers and sisters, having been orphaned from you by absence for a 73short while--74in 75person, not in 76spirit--were all the more eager with great desire 77to see your face. 1878For 79we wanted to come to you--I, Paul, 8081more than once--and 82Satan 83hindered us. 19For who is our hope, or 84joy or crown of pride, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His 8586coming? Or is it not indeed you? 20For you are 87our glory and joy.
