Acts 17
Darby Bible
1And having journeyed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they cameG2064 to ThessalonicaG2332, whereG3699 wasG1510 the synagogueG4864 of the JewsG2453. 2And accordingG2596 to Paul's custom he wentG1525 in among them, and on threeG5140 sabbathsG4521 reasonedG1256 with them from the scripturesG1124, 3opening and laying down that the ChristG5547 must have sufferedG3958 and risenG450 up from among the deadG3498, and that this isG1510 the ChristG5547, JesusG2424 whom I announce to you. 4And some of them believed, and joined themselves to PaulG3972 and SilasG4609, and of the GreeksG1672 who worshipped, a greatG4183 multitudeG4128, and of the chief womenG1135 not a fewG3641. 5But the JewsG2453 having been stirred up to jealousy, and taken to [themselves] certainG5100 wickedG4190 menG435 of the lowest rabble, and having got a crowd together, set the cityG4172 in confusion; and having beset the houseG3614 of JasonG2394 soughtG2212 to bringG4254 them out to the people; 6and not having foundG2147 them, dragged JasonG2394 and certainG5100 brethren before the politarchs, cryingG994 out, These [menG3778] that have set the worldG3625 in tumult, are come hereG1759 alsoG2532, 7whom JasonG2394 has received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of CaesarG2541, sayingG3004, that there isG1510 another kingG935, JesusG2424. 8And they troubledG5015 the crowdG3793 and the politarchs when they heardG191 these thingsG3778. 9And having takenG2983 security of JasonG2394 and the restG3062, they let them goG630. 10But the brethren immediatelyG2112 sent away, in the nightG3571, PaulG3972 and SilasG4609 to BereaG960; who, being arrived, went away into the synagogueG4864 of the JewsG2453. 11And these wereG1510 more noble than those in ThessalonicaG2332, receiving the wordG3056 with all readinessG4288 of mind, daily searching the scripturesG1124 if these thingsG3778 wereG1510 soG3779. 12ThereforeG3767 manyG4183 from among them believedG4100, and of Grecian womenG1135 of the upper classes and menG435 not a fewG3641. 13But whenG5613 the JewsG2453 from ThessalonicaG2332 knewG1097 that the wordG3056 of 1GodG2316 was announced in BereaG960 alsoG2532 by PaulG3972, they cameG2064 there alsoG2532, stirring up the crowdsG3793. 14And then immediatelyG2112 the brethren sent awayG1821 PaulG3972 to goG4198 as to the seaG2281; but SilasG4609 and Timotheus abode there. 15But they that conducted PaulG3972 broughtG71 him as farG2193 as AthensG116; and, having receivedG2983 a commandmentG1785 to SilasG4609 and Timotheus, that they should comeG2064 to him as quicklyG5036 as possible, they departed. 16But in AthensG116, while PaulG3972 wasG1510 waiting for them, his spiritG4151 wasG1510 painfully excited in him seeingG2334 the cityG4172 given up to idolatry. 17He reasonedG1256 thereforeG3767 in the synagogueG4864 with the JewsG2453, and those who worshipped, and in the market-place every dayG2250 with those he met with. 18But some alsoG2532 of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers attacked him. And some saidG3004, What would this chatterer sayG3004? and some, He seemsG1380 to beG1510 an announcer of foreign demonsG1140, because he announced the glad tidings of JesusG2424 and the resurrectionG386 [to them]. 19And having taken holdG1949 on him they broughtG71 [him] to Areopagus, sayingG3004, Might we knowG1097 what this newG2537 doctrine which is spokenG2980 by thee [is]? 20For thou bringest certainG5100 strangeG3579 thingsG3778 to our earsG189. We wishG2309 thereforeG3767 to knowG1097 what these thingsG3778 may mean. 21NowG1161 all [the] AtheniansG117 and the strangersG3581 sojourning there spent their time in nothing else than to tellG3004 and to hearG191 the news. 22And PaulG3972 standingG2476 in the midstG3319 of Areopagus saidG5346, AtheniansG117, in every way I seeG2334 you given up to demon worship; 23for, passingG1330 through and beholding your shrines, I foundG2147 alsoG2532 an altar on which was inscribed, To the unknownG50 2GodG2316. Whom thereforeG3767 ye reverence, not knowingG50 [him], him I announce to you. 24The 3GodG2316 who has madeG4160 the worldG2889 and all thingsG3778 which are in it, he, being LordG2962 of heavenG3772 and earthG1093, does not dwellG2730 in templesG3485 madeG4160 with handsG5499, 25nor is served by men's handsG5495 as needing somethingG5100, himself givingG1325 to all lifeG2222 and breath and all thingsG3956; 26and has madeG4160 of oneG1520 blood every nationG1484 of menG444 to dwellG2730 upon the whole faceG4383 of the earthG1093, having determined ordained timesG2540 and the boundaries of their dwellingG2730, 27that they may seekG2212 4GodG2316; if indeed they might feel after him and findG2147 him, although he is not farG3112 from each oneG1520 of us: 28for in him we liveG2198 and moveG2795 and exist; as alsoG2532 some of the poets amongst you have saidG3004, For we areG1510 alsoG2532 his offspringG1085. 29BeingG1510 thereforeG3767 [the] offspringG1085 of 5GodG2316, we oughtG3784 not to thinkG3543 that which isG1510 divineG2304 to beG1510 like goldG5557 or silverG696 or stoneG3037, [the] graven form of man's art and imagination. 306GodG2316 thereforeG3767, having overlooked the timesG5550 of ignoranceG52, nowG3568 enjoins menG444 that they shall all everywhereG3837 repentG3340, 31because he has setG2476 a dayG2250 in which he is going to judgeG2919 the habitable earthG3625 in righteousnessG1343 by [the] manG435 whom he has appointedG3724, giving the proof [of it] to all [in] having raisedG450 him from among [the] deadG3498. 32And when they heardG191 [of the] resurrectionG386 of the deadG3498, some mocked, and some saidG3004, We will hearG191 thee againG3825 alsoG2532 concerningG4012 this. 33ThusG3779 PaulG3972 wentG1831 out of their midstG3319. 34But some menG435 joining themselves to him believedG4100; among whom alsoG2532 was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a womanG1135 by nameG3686 Damaris, and othersG2087 with them.
