Deuteronomy Chapter 1

Darby Bible

1These are the wordsH1697 which MosesH4872 spokeH1696 to all IsraelH3478 on this sideH5676 the JordanH3383, in the wildernessH4057, in the plainH6160, oppositeH4136 to Suph, between ParanH6290 and Tophel, LabanH3837, HazerothH2698, and Dizahab. 2There are eleven days' journeyH1870 from HorebH2722 by the wayH1870 of mount SeirH8165 to Kadesh-barneaH6947. 3And it came to pass in the fortieth yearH8141, in the eleventh monthH2320, on the first of the monthH2320, that MosesH4872 spokeH1696 to the children of IsraelH3478, according to all that Jehovah had given him in commandH6680 to them; 4after he had smitten SihonH5511 the kingH4428 of the AmoritesH567, who dweltH3427 at HeshbonH2809, and OgH5747 the kingH4428 of BashanH1316, who dweltH3427 at AshtarothH6252 [and] at EdreiH154. 5On this sideH5676 the JordanH3383, in the landH776 of MoabH4124, began MosesH4872 to unfold this lawH8451, sayingH559, 6Jehovah our 1GodH430 spokeH1696 unto us in HorebH2722, sayingH559, Ye have stayed long enoughH7227 in this mountainH2022. 7TurnH6437 and take your journey, and goH935 to the hill-country of the AmoritesH567, and unto all the neighbouring places in the plainH6160, in the mountainH2022, and in the lowland, and in the southH5045, and by the seaside, the landH776 of the CanaanitesH3669, and LebanonH3844, unto the greatH1419 riverH5104, the riverH5104 EuphratesH6578. 8Behold, I have setH5414 the landH776 before you: goH935 in and possessH3423 the landH776 which Jehovah sworeH7650 unto your fathersH1, to AbrahamH85, to IsaacH3327, and to JacobH3290, to giveH5414 unto them and to their seedH2233 after them. 9And I spoke unto you at that timeH6256, sayingH559, I am not ableH3201 to bearH5375 you myself aloneH905. 10Jehovah your 2GodH430 hath multipliedH7235 you, and behold, ye are this dayH3117 as the starsH3556 of heavenH8064 for multitudeH7230. 11Jehovah, the 3GodH430 of your fathersH1, make you a thousandH505 timesH6471 so many more as ye are, and blessH1288 you as he hath saidH1696 unto you! 12HowH349 can I myself aloneH905 sustain your wear, and your burdenH4853, and your strifeH7379? 13ProvideH3051 you wiseH2450 and understandingH995 and knownH3045 menH376, according to your tribesH7626, that I may makeH7760 them your chiefsH7218. 14And ye answered me, and saidH559, The thingH1697 that thou hast spokenH1696 is goodH2896 [for us] to do. 15So I tookH3947 the chiefsH7218 of your tribesH7626, wiseH2450 menH376 and knownH3045, and madeH5414 them chiefsH7218 over you, captains of thousandsH505, and captains of hundredsH3967, and captains of fiftiesH2572, and captains of tensH6235, and officers for your tribesH7626. 16And I commandedH6680 your judgesH8199 at that timeH6256, sayingH559, HearH8085 [the causes] between your brethren, and judgeH8199 righteously between a manH376 and his brotherH251, and him also that sojourneth with him. 17Ye shall not respect personsH376 in judgmentH4941: ye shall hearH8085 the smallH6996 as well as the greatH1419; ye shall not be afraidH1481 of the faceH6440 of manH376, for the judgmentH4941 is 4God's; and the matterH1697 that is too hardH7185 for you shall ye bringH7126 to me, that I may hearH8085 it. 18And I commandedH6680 you at that timeH6256 all the thingsH1697 that ye should do. 19And we departedH5265 from HorebH2722 and wentH935 through all that greatH1419 and terrible wildernessH4057, which ye sawH7200, on the wayH1870 to the mountainH2022 of the AmoritesH567, as Jehovah our 5GodH430 had commandedH6680 us; and we cameH935 to Kadesh-barneaH6947. 20And I saidH559 unto you, Ye are comeH935 unto the mountainH2022 of the AmoritesH567, which Jehovah our 6GodH430 giveth us. 21Behold, Jehovah thy 7GodH430 hath setH5414 the landH776 before thee: goH5927 up, takeH3423 possessionH3423, as Jehovah the 8GodH430 of thy fathersH1 hath saidH1696 unto thee; fearH3372 not, neither be dismayedH2865. 22And ye cameH935 near to me all of you, and saidH559, We will sendH7971 menH376 before us, who shall examine the landH776 for us, and bringH935 us wordH1697 again of the wayH1870 by which we must goH935 up, and of the citiesH5892 to which we shall comeH935. 23And the matterH1697 was goodH3190 in mine eyesH5869; and I tookH3947 twelve menH376 of you, oneH259 manH376 for a tribeH7626. 24And they turnedH6437 and wentH935 up into the mountainH2022, and cameH935 to the valley of EshcolH812, and searched it out. 25And they tookH3947 of the fruitH6529 of the landH776 in their handH3027, and broughtH7725 it downH3381 unto us, and broughtH7725 us answer, and saidH559, The landH776 is goodH2896 that Jehovah our 9GodH430 hath givenH5414 us. 26But ye wouldH14 not goH5927 up, and rebelledH4784 against the word of Jehovah your 10GodH430; 27and ye murmured in your tentsH168, and saidH559, Because Jehovah hated us, he hath broughtH3318 us forthH3318 out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714, to deliver us into the handH3027 of the AmoritesH567, to destroyH8045 us. 28Whither shall we goH5927 up? Our brethren have made our heartsH3824 meltH4549, sayingH559, [They are] a peopleH5971 greaterH1419 and taller than we; the citiesH5892 are greatH1419 and walled up to heavenH8064; and moreover we have seenH7200 the sonsH1121 of the Anakim there. 29And I saidH559 unto you, Be not afraidH3372, neither fearH3372 them; 30Jehovah your 11GodH430 who goeth before you, he will fightH3898 for you, according to all that he did for you in EgyptH4714 before your eyesH5869; 31and in the wildernessH4057 whereH834 thou hast seenH7200 that Jehovah thy 12GodH430 boreH5375 thee, as a manH376 doth bearH5375 his sonH1121, in all the wayH1870 that ye wentH1980, until ye cameH935 to this placeH4725. 32But In this thingH1697 ye did not believeH539 Jehovah your 13GodH430, 33who wentH1980 in the wayH1870 before you, to search you out a placeH4725 for your encamping, in fireH784 by nightH3915, to shew you by what wayH1870 ye should goH1980, and in the cloudH6051 by dayH3119. 34And Jehovah heardH8085 the voiceH6963 of your wordsH1697, and was wroth, and sworeH7650, sayingH559, 35None among these menH376, this evilH7451 generationH1755, shall in any wise seeH7200 that goodH2896 landH776, which I sworeH7650 to giveH5414 unto your fathersH1! 36Except CalebH3612 the sonH1121 of JephunnehH3312, he shall seeH7200 it, and to him will I giveH5414 the landH776 that he hath troddenH1869 upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed Jehovah. 37AlsoH1571 Jehovah was angryH599 with me on your accountH1558, sayingH559, Thou alsoH1571 shalt not goH935 in thither. 38JoshuaH3091 the sonH1121 of NunH5126, who standeth before thee, he shall goH935 in thither: strengthenH2388 him, for he shall cause IsraelH3478 to inheritH5157 it. 39And your littleH2945 onesH2945, of whom ye saidH559, They shall beH1961 a preyH957, and your children, who this dayH3117 knowH3045 neither goodH2896 nor evilH7451, they shall goH935 in thither, and unto them will I giveH5414 it, and they shall possessH3423 it. 40But ye, turnH6437, and take your journeyH1870 into the wildernessH4057 by the wayH1870 of the Red seaH3220. 41— And ye answered and saidH559 unto me, We have sinnedH2398 against Jehovah, we will goH5927 up and fightH3898, according to all that Jehovah our 14GodH430 hath commandedH6680 us. And ye girdedH2296 on every manH376 his weaponsH3627 of warH4421, and ye would goH5927 presumptuously up the hillH2022. 42And Jehovah saidH559 to me, SayH559 unto them, GoH5927 not up, neither fightH3898; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemiesH341. 43And I spokeH1696 unto you, but ye would not hearH8085, and ye rebelledH4784 against the word of Jehovah, and actedH2102 presumptuouslyH2102, and wentH5927 up the hillH2022. 44And the AmoriteH567 that dweltH3427 on that hillH2022 cameH3318 out against you, and chased you, like as beesH1682 do, and cut you in pieces in SeirH8165, as far as HormahH2767. 45And ye returnedH7725 and weptH1058 before Jehovah, but Jehovah would not listenH8085 to your voiceH6963, nor giveH238 earH238 unto you. 46And ye abode in KadeshH6946 manyH7227 daysH3117, according unto the daysH3117 that ye abode [there].
