Jonah Chapter 1
Darby Bible
1And the wordH1697 of Jehovah came unto JonahH3124 the sonH1121 of AmittaiH573, sayingH559, 2AriseH6965, goH5927 to NinevehH5210, the greatH1419 cityH5892, and cry against it; for their wickednessH7451 is comeH5927 up before me. 3But JonahH3124 roseH6965 up to fleeH1272 unto TarshishH8659 from the presenceH6440 of Jehovah; and he wentH935 downH3381 to JoppaH3305, and foundH4672 a shipH591 goingH935 to TarshishH8659; so he paid the fare thereof, and wentH935 downH3381 into it, to goH935 with them unto TarshishH8659, from the presenceH6440 of Jehovah. 4But Jehovah sent out a greatH1419 windH7307 upon the seaH3220, and there wasH1961 a mighty tempestH5591 upon the seaH3220, so that the shipH591 wasH1961 like to beH1961 brokenH7665. 5And the mariners were afraidH3372, and criedH2199 every oneH376 unto his 1godH430; and they cast forth the wares that were in the shipH591 into the seaH3220, to be lightened of them. But JonahH3124 had goneH3381 downH3381 into the lower partH3411 of the shipH591; and he layH7901, and was fast asleep. 6And the shipmaster came to him, and saidH559 unto him, What meanest thou, sleeper? ariseH6965, callH7121 upon thy 2GodH430; perhapsH194 3GodH430 will think upon us, that we perishH6 not. 7And they saidH559 each oneH376 to his fellow, Come, and let us castH5307 lotsH1486, that we may knowH3045 for whose cause this evilH7451 is upon us. And they castH5307 lotsH1486, and the lotH1486 fellH5307 upon JonahH3124. 8And they saidH559 unto him, TellH5046 us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evilH7451 is upon us: what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what peopleH5971 art thou? 9And he saidH559 unto them, I am a HebrewH5680, and I fearH3373 Jehovah, the 4GodH430 of the heavensH8064, who hath madeH6213 the seaH3220 and the dryH3004 [landH3004]. 10Then were the menH376 exceedingly afraidH3372, and saidH559 unto him, What is this thou hast done? For the menH376 knewH3045 that he fledH1272 from the presenceH6440 of Jehovah: for he had toldH5046 them. 11And they saidH559 unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the seaH3220 may be calmH8367 unto us? for the seaH3220 grew more and more tempestuous. 12And he saidH559 unto them, TakeH5375 me up, and cast me forth into the seaH3220; so shall the seaH3220 be calmH8367 unto you: for I knowH3045 that because of me this greatH1419 tempestH5591 is upon you. 13But the menH376 rowed hard to regain the landH3004; but they could not; for the seaH3220 grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14And they cried unto Jehovah and saidH559, Ah, Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perishH6 for this man's lifeH5315, and lay not upon us innocentH5355 bloodH1818: for thou, Jehovah, hast done as it pleasedH2654 thee. 15And they tookH5375 up JonahH3124, and cast him forth into the seaH3220: and the seaH3220 ceased from its raging. 16And the menH376 fearedH3372 Jehovah exceedingly, and offeredH2076 a sacrificeH2077 unto Jehovah, and madeH5087 vowsH5088. 17And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
