Judges Chapter 1
Darby Bible
1And it came to pass after the deathH4194 of JoshuaH3091 that the children of IsraelH3478 askedH7592 Jehovah, sayingH559, Which of us shall goH5927 up against the CanaanitesH3669 firstH8462, to fightH3898 against them? 2And Jehovah saidH559, JudahH3063 shall goH5927 up: behold, I have delivered the landH776 into his handH3027. 3And JudahH3063 saidH559 to SimeonH8095 his brotherH251, ComeH1980 up with me into my lotH1486, and let us fightH3898 against the CanaanitesH3669, and I likewise will goH1980 with thee into thy lotH1486; and SimeonH8095 wentH1980 with him. 4And JudahH3063 wentH5927 up; and Jehovah delivered the CanaanitesH3669 and the Perizzites into their handH3027, and they smote them in BezekH966, tenH6235 thousandH505 menH376. 5And they foundH4672 Adoni-BezekH137 in BezekH966, and foughtH3898 against him, and they smote the CanaanitesH3669 and the Perizzites. 6And Adoni-BezekH137 fledH5127, and they pursuedH7291 after him, and caught him, and cutH7112 off his thumbsH931 and his great toesH931. 7And Adoni-BezekH137 saidH559, SeventyH7657 kingsH4428, with their thumbsH931 and their great toesH931 cutH7112 off, gleanedH3950 under my tableH7979: as I have done, soH3651 1GodH430 has requited me. And they broughtH935 him to JerusalemH3389, and there he diedH4191. 8And the children of JudahH3063 foughtH3898 against JerusalemH3389, and tookH3920 it, and smote it with the edge of the swordH2719, and set the cityH5892 on fireH784. 9And afterwards the children of JudahH3063 wentH3381 downH3381 to fightH3898 against the CanaanitesH3669, that dweltH3427 in the hill-country, and in the southH5045, and in the lowland. 10And JudahH3063 went against the CanaanitesH3669 that dweltH3427 in HebronH2275 — the nameH8034 of HebronH2275 before was Kirjath-Arba; and they slew SheshaiH8344 and AhimanH289 and TalmaiH8526. 11And from there he went against the inhabitantsH3427 of DebirH1688; now the nameH8034 of DebirH1688 before was Kirjath-sepher. 12And CalebH3612 saidH559, He that smites Kirjath-sepher and takesH3920 it, to him will I giveH5414 AchsahH5915 my daughterH1323 as wifeH802. 13And OthnielH6274 the sonH1121 of KenazH7073, Caleb's youngerH6996 brotherH251, tookH3920 it; and he gaveH5414 him AchsahH5915 his daughterH1323 as wifeH802. 14And it cameH935 to pass as she cameH935, that she urged him to askH7592 of her fatherH1 the fieldH7704; and she sprang down from the ass. And CalebH3612 saidH559 to her, What wouldest thou? 15And she saidH559 to him, GiveH5414 me a blessingH1293; for thou hast givenH5414 me a southern landH776; giveH5414 me also springs of waterH4325. And CalebH3612 gaveH5414 her the upperH5942 springs and the lower springs. 16And the children of the KeniteH7017, Moses' father-in-law, had goneH5927 up out of the cityH5892 of palm-trees with the children of JudahH3063 into the wildernessH4057 of JudahH3063, which is in the southH5045 of AradH6166; and they wentH5927 and dweltH3427 with the peopleH5971. 17And JudahH3063 went with SimeonH8095 his brotherH251, and they slew the CanaanitesH3669 that inhabitedH3427 Zephath, and utterly destroyed it; and they calledH7121 the nameH8034 of the cityH5892 HormahH2767. 18And JudahH3063 tookH3920 Gazah and its borderH1366, and AshkelonH831 and its borderH1366, and EkronH6138 and its borderH1366. 19And Jehovah wasH1961 with JudahH3063; and he tookH3423 possessionH3423 of the hill-country, for he did not dispossessH3423 the inhabitantsH3427 of the valleyH6010, because they had chariotsH7393 of ironH1270. 20And they gaveH5414 to CalebH3612 HebronH2275, as MosesH4872 had saidH1696; and he dispossessedH3423 from thence the threeH7969 sonsH1121 of Anak. 21And the children of BenjaminH1144 did not dispossessH3423 the Jebusites, the inhabitantsH3427 of JerusalemH3389; but the Jebusites dwellH3427 with the children of BenjaminH1144 in JerusalemH3389 to this dayH3117. 22And the houseH1004 of JosephH3130, they alsoH1571 wentH5927 up against Bethel; and Jehovah was with them. 23And the houseH1004 of JosephH3130 sent to search out Bethel; now the nameH8034 of the cityH5892 before was LuzH3870. 24And the guardsH8104 sawH7200 a manH376 comeH3318 forthH3318 out of the cityH5892, and saidH559 unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, how [we] may enter into the cityH5892, and we will shew thee kindness. 25And he shewed them how to enter into the cityH5892. And they smote the cityH5892 with the edge of the swordH2719; but they let goH7971 the manH376 and all his familyH4940. 26And the manH376 went into the landH776 of the HittitesH2850, and builtH1129 a cityH5892, and calledH7121 its nameH8034 LuzH3870, which is its nameH8034 to this dayH3117. 27And ManassehH4519 did not dispossessH3423 Beth-sheanH1052 and its dependent villages, nor TaanachH8590 and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitantsH3427 of DorH1756 and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitantsH3427 of IbleamH2991 and its dependent villages, nor the inhabitantsH3427 of MegiddoH4023 and its dependent villages; and the CanaanitesH3669 would dwellH3427 in that landH776. 28And it came to pass when IsraelH3478 becameH1961 strongH2388, that they madeH7760 the CanaanitesH3669 tributary; but they did not utterly dispossessH3423 them. 29And EphraimH669 did not dispossessH3423 the CanaanitesH3669 that dweltH3427 in GezerH1507; but the CanaanitesH3669 dweltH3427 among them in GezerH1507. 30ZebulunH2074 did not dispossessH3423 the inhabitantsH3427 of Kitron, nor the inhabitantsH3427 of Nahalol; but the CanaanitesH3669 dweltH3427 among them, and becameH1961 tributaries. 31AsherH836 did not dispossessH3423 the inhabitantsH3427 of Accho, nor the inhabitantsH3427 of Zidon, nor Ahlab, nor Achzib, nor Helbah, nor Aphik, nor RehobH7340; 32and the Asherites dweltH3427 among the CanaanitesH3669, the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776; for they did not dispossessH3423 them. 33NaphtaliH5321 did not dispossessH3423 the inhabitantsH3427 of Beth-shemeshH1053, nor the inhabitantsH3427 of Beth-anathH1043; and he dweltH3427 among the CanaanitesH3669, the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776, but the inhabitantsH3427 of Beth-shemeshH1053 and of Beth-anathH1043 becameH1961 tributaries to them. 34And the AmoritesH567 forced the children of DanH1835 into the hill-country, for they would not suffer them to comeH3381 down to the valleyH6010. 35And the AmoritesH567 would dwellH3427 on mount HeresH2776, in Ajalon and in ShaalbimH8169; but the handH3027 of the houseH1004 of JosephH3130 prevailed, and they becameH1961 tributaries. 36And the borderH1366 of the AmoritesH567 was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rockH5553, and upwardsH4605.
