1 Samuel Chapter 1

Darby Bible

1And there was a certain manH376 of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount EphraimH669, and his nameH8034 was ElkanahH511, the sonH1121 of JerohamH3395, the sonH1121 of ElihuH453, the sonH1121 of Tohu, the sonH1121 of ZuphH6689, an EphrathiteH673. 2And he had twoH8147 wivesH802: the nameH8034 of the oneH259 was HannahH2584, and the nameH8034 of the other PeninnahH6444; and PeninnahH6444 had childrenH3206, but HannahH2584 had no childrenH3206. 3And this manH376 wentH5927 up out of his cityH5892 from year to year to worship and to sacrificeH2076 to Jehovah of hostsH6635 in ShilohH7887. And the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, the priestsH3548 of Jehovah, were there. 4And it came to pass on the dayH3117 that ElkanahH511 sacrificedH2076, he gaveH5414 to PeninnahH6444 his wifeH802 and to all her sonsH1121 and her daughtersH1323 portionsH4490; 5but to HannahH2584 he used to giveH5414 a double portionH4490, for he lovedH157 HannahH2584; but Jehovah had shutH5462 up her wombH7358. 6And her adversary provokedH3707 her much alsoH1571, to make her fret, because Jehovah had shutH5462 up her wombH7358. 7And [as] he did soH3651 yearH8141 by yearH8141, as oftenH1767 as she wentH5927 up to the houseH1004 of Jehovah, she provokedH3707 her thusH3651; and she weptH1058 and did not eatH398. 8And ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 saidH559 to her, HannahH2584, whyH4100 weepest thou? and whyH4100 eatest thou not? and whyH4100 is thy heartH3824 grieved? Am not I betterH2896 to thee than tenH6235 sonsH1121? 9And HannahH2584 roseH6965 up after they had eatenH398 in ShilohH7887, and after they had drunkH8354; (now EliH5941 the priestH3548 satH3427 upon the seatH3678 by the door-post of the templeH1964 of Jehovah;) 10and she was in bitternessH4751 of soulH5315, and prayedH6419 to Jehovah, and weptH1058 much. 11And she vowedH5087 a vowH5088, and saidH559, O Jehovah of hostsH6635, if thou wilt indeed lookH7200 on the affliction of thy handmaid, and rememberH2142 me, and not forgetH7911 thy handmaid, but wilt giveH5414 unto thy handmaid a manH376 child, then I will giveH5414 him to Jehovah all the daysH3117 of his life, and there shall no razor comeH5927 upon his headH7218. 12And it came to pass as she continued prayingH6419 before Jehovah, that EliH5941 marked her mouthH6310. 13Now HannahH2584 spokeH1696 in her heartH3820; onlyH7535 her lipsH8193 moved, but her voiceH6963 was not heardH8085; and EliH5941 thought she was drunkenH7910. 14And EliH5941 saidH559 to her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put awayH5493 thy wineH3196 from thee. 15And HannahH2584 answered and saidH559, No, my lord, I am a womanH802 of a sorrowful spiritH7307: I have drunkH8354 neither wineH3196 nor strongH7941 drinkH8354, but have pouredH8210 out my soulH5315 before Jehovah. 16Take not thy handmaid for a daughterH1323 of Belial: for out of the abundanceH7230 of my grief and provocation have I spokenH1696 hitherto. 17And EliH5941 answered and saidH559, Go in peaceH7965; and the 1GodH430 of IsraelH3478 grant thee thy petitionH7596 which thou hast askedH7592 of him. 18And she saidH559, Let thy bondwoman findH4672 graceH2580 in thy sight. And the womanH802 went her wayH1870, and did eatH398, and her countenance wasH1961 no more [as before]. 19And they roseH7925 up earlyH7925 in the morningH1242 and worshipped before Jehovah, and returnedH7725 and cameH935 to their houseH1004 at RamahH7414. And ElkanahH511 knewH3045 HannahH2584 his wifeH802; and Jehovah rememberedH2142 her. 20And it came to pass when the time was come about after HannahH2584 had conceivedH2029, that she boreH3205 a sonH1121, and calledH7121 his nameH8034 SamuelH8050, [saying,] Because I have askedH7592 him of Jehovah. 21And ElkanahH511 her husbandH376, and all his houseH1004, wentH5927 up to sacrificeH2077 to Jehovah the yearly sacrificeH2077 and his vowH5088. 22But HannahH2584 did not goH935 up, for she saidH559 to her husbandH376, [I will wait] until the child is weanedH1580; then will I bringH935 him, that he may appearH7200 before Jehovah, and there abide for everH5769. 23And ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 saidH559 to her, Do what is goodH2896 in thy sight: abide until thou hast weanedH1580 him; onlyH389, may Jehovah fulfil his wordH1697. And the womanH802 abode, and gave her sonH1121 suckH3243 until she weanedH1580 him. 24And she took him up with her whenH834 she had weanedH1580 him, with threeH7969 bullocks, and oneH259 ephahH374 of flourH7058, and a flask of wineH3196, and broughtH935 him to the houseH1004 of Jehovah to ShilohH7887; and the boy was youngH5288. 25And they slaughteredH7819 the bullock, and broughtH935 the boy to EliH5941. 26And she saidH559, Oh my lord, [as] thy soulH5315 liveth, my lord, I am the womanH802 that stoodH5324 by thee hereH2088 to prayH6419 to Jehovah. 27For this boy I prayedH6419; and Jehovah has granted me my petitionH7596 which I askedH7592 of him. 28And alsoH1571 I have lent him to Jehovah: all the daysH3117 that he lives, he is lent to Jehovah. And he worshipped Jehovah there.
