Acts 23
Darby Bible
1And PaulG3972, fixing his eyes on the councilG4892, saidG3004, Brethren, I have walked in all goodG18 conscienceG4893 with 1GodG2316 unto this dayG2250. 2But the highG749 priestG749 AnaniasG367 ordered those standingG3936 by him to smite his mouthG4750. 3Then PaulG3972 saidG3004 to him, 2GodG2316 will smite thee, whited wall. And thou, dost thou sitG2521 judgingG2919 me accordingG2596 to the lawG3551, and breaking the lawG3551 commandest me to be smitten? 4And those that stoodG3936 by saidG3004, Dost thou rail against the highG749 priestG749 of 3GodG2316? 5And PaulG3972 saidG3004, I wasG1510 not conscious, brethren, that he wasG1510 highG749 priestG749; for it isG1510 writtenG1125, Thou shalt not speakG3004 evilly of the rulerG758 of thy peopleG2992. 6But PaulG3972, knowingG1097 that the oneG1520 partG3313 [of them] wereG1510 of the SadduceesG4523 and the otherG2087 of the PhariseesG5330, criedG2896 out in the councilG4892, Brethren, I amG1510 a PhariseeG5330, sonG5207 of PhariseesG5330: I amG1510 judgedG2919 concerningG4012 the hopeG1680 and resurrectionG386 of [the] deadG3498. 7And when he had spokenG2980 this, there was a tumult of the PhariseesG5330 and the SadduceesG4523, and the multitudeG4128 was divided. 8For SadduceesG4523 sayG3004 there isG1510 no resurrectionG386, nor angelG32, nor spiritG4151; but PhariseesG5330 confessG3670 both of them. 9And there was a greatG3173 clamour, and the scribesG1122 of the Pharisees' partG3313 risingG450 up contended, sayingG3004, We findG2147 nothing evilG2556 in this manG444; and if a spiritG4151 has spokenG2980 to him, or an angelG32... 10And a greatG4183 tumult having arisen, the chiliarch, fearingG5399 lestG3361 PaulG3972 should have been tornG1288 in pieces by them, commandedG2753 the troop to comeG1096 downG2597 and take him by force from the midstG3319 of them, and to bringG71 [him] into the fortress. 11But the following nightG3571 the LordG2962 stood by him, and saidG3004, Be of good courageG2293; for as thou hast testifiedG3140 the things concerningG4012 me at JerusalemG2419, so thou must bearG3140 witnessG3140 at RomeG4516 alsoG2532. 12And when it was dayG2250, the JewsG2453, having banded together, putG615 themselves under a curse, sayingG3004 that they would neither eatG2068 nor drinkG4095 till they should killG615 PaulG3972. 13And they wereG1510 moreG4183 than fortyG5062 who had joined together in this oath; 14and they went to the chiefG749 priestsG749 and eldersG4245, and saidG3004, We have cursed ourselves with a curse to tasteG1089 nothingG3367 until we killG615 PaulG3972. 15NowG1161 thereforeG3767 do ye with the councilG4892 makeG1718 a representation to the chiliarch so that he may bringG2609 him downG2609 to you, as about to determine more precisely what concerns him, and we, before he draws near, areG1510 readyG2092 to kill him. 16But Paul's sister's sonG5207, having heardG191 of the lying in wait, cameG3854 and enteredG1525 into the fortress and reportedG518 [it] to PaulG3972. 17And PaulG3972, having calledG4341 oneG1520 of the centurionsG1543, saidG5346, Take this youth to the chiliarch, for he has somethingG5100 to reportG518 to him. 18He thereforeG3767, having takenG3880 him with [him], ledG71 him to the chiliarch, and saysG2980, The prisonerG1198 PaulG3972 calledG4341 me to [him] and askedG2065 me to leadG71 this youth to thee, who has somethingG5100 to sayG2980 to thee. 19And the chiliarch having taken him by the handG5495, and having gone apart in private, inquiredG4441, What isG1510 it that thou hast to reportG518 to me? 20And he saidG3004, The JewsG2453 have agreed together to make a request to thee, that thou mayest bringG2609 PaulG3972 downG2609 to-morrow into the councilG4892, as about to inquireG4441 somethingG5100 more precise concerningG4012 him. 21Do not thou then beG1510 persuadedG3982 by them, for there lie in wait for him of them moreG4183 than fortyG5062 menG435, who have put themselves under a curse neither to eatG2068 nor drinkG4095 till they kill him; and nowG3568 they areG1510 readyG2092 waitingG4327 the promiseG1860 from thee. 22The chiliarch thenG3767 dismissedG630 the youth, commandingG3853 [him], Utter to no oneG3367 that thou hast represented these thingsG3778 to me. 23And having called to [him] certainG5100 twoG1417 of the centurionsG1543, he saidG3004, PrepareG2090 twoG1417 hundredG1250 soldiersG4757 that they may goG4198 as farG2193 as CaesareaG2542, and seventyG1440 horsemenG2460, and twoG1417 hundredG1250 light-armed footmen, for the thirdG5154 hourG5610 of the nightG3571. 24And [he ordered them] to provide beasts, that they might set PaulG3972 on them and carry [him] safe through to FelixG5344 the governorG2232, 25having writtenG1125 a letterG1992, couched in this form: 26ClaudiusG2804 LysiasG3079 to the mostG2903 excellentG2903 governorG2232 FelixG5344, greetingG5463. 27This manG435, having beenG1510 taken by the JewsG2453, and beingG1510 about to beG1510 killed by them, I cameG2186 up with the military and took out [of their hands], having learnedG3129 that he wasG1510 a RomanG4514. 28And desiring to knowG1921 the chargeG156 on which they accused him, I broughtG2609 him downG2609 to their councilG4892; 29whom I foundG2147 to be accused of questionsG2213 of their lawG3551, but to have no charge laid against him [making him] worthyG514 of deathG2288 or of bonds. 30But having received information of a plotG1917 about to beG1510 putG3992 in execution against the manG435 [by the Jews], I have immediatelyG1824 sentG3992 him to thee, commandingG3853 alsoG2532 his accusersG2725 to sayG3004 before thee the things that areG1510 against him. [Farewell.] 31The soldiersG4757 thereforeG3767, accordingG2596 to what was ordered them, tookG353 PaulG3972 and broughtG71 him by nightG3571 to Antipatris, 32and on the morrow, having left the horsemenG2460 to goG565 with him, returnedG5290 to the fortress. 33And these, having enteredG1525 into CaesareaG2542, and given up the letterG1992 to the governorG2232, presentedG3936 PaulG3972 alsoG2532 to him. 34And having readG314 [it], and askedG1905 of what eparchy he wasG1510, and learned that [he wasG1510] of CiliciaG2791, 35he saidG5346, I will hear thee fully whenG3752 thine accusersG2725 alsoG2532 are arrived. And he commandedG2753 him to be keptG5442 in Herod's praetoriumG4232.
