Ecclesiastes Chapter 1

Darby Bible

1The wordsH1697 of the Preacher, the sonH1121 of DavidH1732, kingH4428 in JerusalemH3389. 2VanityH1892 of vanitiesH1892, saith the Preacher, vanityH1892 of vanitiesH1892! all is vanityH1892. 3What profitH3504 hath manH120 of all his labour wherewith he laboureth under the sunH8121? 4[One] generationH1755 passeth away, and [another] generationH1755 cometh, but the earthH776 standeth for everH5769. 5The sunH8121 also riseth, and the sunH8121 goeth down, and hasteth to its placeH4725 where it ariseth. 6The windH7307 goeth towards the southH1864, and turneth about towards the northH6828: it turneth about continually, and the windH7307 returneth again to its circuits. 7All the rivers run into the seaH3220, yet the seaH3220 is not fullH4392: unto the placeH4725 whither the rivers goH1980, thither they goH1980 again. 8All thingsH1697 are fullH4390 of toil; none can express it. The eyeH5869 is not satisfiedH7646 with seeingH7200, nor the earH241 filledH4390 with hearing. 9That which hath beenH1961 is that which shall beH1961; and that which hath beenH1961 done is that which will beH1961 done: and there is nothingH369 newH2319 under the sunH8121. 10Is there a thingH1697 whereof it may beH1961 saidH559, SeeH7200, this is newH2319? It hath beenH1961 alreadyH3528 in the ages which were before us. 11There is no remembranceH2146 of formerH7223 thingsH7223; neither shall there beH1961 remembranceH2146 of thingsH7223 that are to come with those who shall live afterwards. 12I, the Preacher, wasH1961 kingH4428 over IsraelH3478 in JerusalemH3389. 13And I applied my heartH3820 to seekH1875 and searchH1875 out by wisdomH2451 concerning all that is done under the heavensH8064: this grievous occupation hath 1GodH430 givenH5414 to the children of menH120 to weary themselves therewith. 14I have seenH7200 all the worksH4639 that are done under the sunH8121, and behold, all is vanityH1892 and pursuit of the windH7307. 15That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numberedH4487. 16I communed with mine own heartH3820, sayingH559, Lo, I have becomeH1961 greatH1431 and have acquired wisdomH2451 more than all they that have beenH1961 before me over JerusalemH3389; and my heartH3820 hath seenH7200 muchH7235 of wisdomH2451 and knowledgeH1847. 17And I applied my heartH3820 to the knowledge of wisdomH2451, and to the knowledge of madnessH1947 and follyH5531: I perceived that this alsoH1571 is a striving after the windH7307. 18For in much wisdomH2451 is much vexation, and he that increaseth knowledgeH1847 increaseth sorrow.
