Ruth Chapter 1

Darby Bible

1And it came to pass in the daysH3117 when the judgesH8199 ruled, that there wasH1961 a famineH7458 in the landH776. And a certain manH376 went from Bethlehem-Judah, to sojourn in the country of MoabH4124, he, and his wifeH802, and his twoH8147 sonsH1121. 2And the nameH8034 of the manH376 was ElimelechH458, and the nameH8034 of his wifeH802 NaomiH5281, and the nameH8034 of his twoH8147 sonsH1121 MahlonH4248 and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-Judah. And they cameH935 into the countryH7704 of MoabH4124, and continued there. 3And ElimelechH458 Naomi's husbandH376 diedH4191; and she was leftH7604, and her twoH8147 sonsH1121. 4And they tookH5375 them Moabitish wivesH802; the nameH8034 of the oneH259 was OrpahH6204, and the nameH8034 of the secondH8145 RuthH7327: and they abode there about tenH6235 yearsH8141. 5And MahlonH4248 and Chilion diedH4191 alsoH1571, both of them; and the womanH802 was leftH7604 of her twoH8147 childrenH3206 and of her husbandH376. 6And she aroseH6965, she and her daughters-in-law, and returnedH7725 from the fieldsH7704 of MoabH4124; for she had heardH8085 in the fieldsH7704 of MoabH4124 how that Jehovah had visitedH6485 his peopleH5971 to giveH5414 them breadH3899. 7Wherefore she wentH3318 forthH3318 out of the placeH4725 whereH834 she had beenH1961, and her twoH8147 daughters-in-law with her; and they wentH3318 on the wayH1870 to returnH7725 to the landH776 of JudahH3063. 8And NaomiH5281 saidH559 to her twoH8147 daughters-in-law, GoH7725, returnH7725 each to her mother's houseH1004. Jehovah deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the deadH4191 and with me. 9Jehovah grant you that ye may findH4672 restH4496, each in the houseH1004 of her husbandH376. And she kissedH5401 them; and they liftedH5375 up their voiceH6963 and weptH1058. 10And they saidH559 to her, We will certainly returnH7725 with thee to thy peopleH5971. 11And NaomiH5281 saidH559, ReturnH7725, my daughtersH1323: whyH4100 will ye goH7725 with me? Are there yetH5750 sonsH1121 in my womb, that they could beH1961 your husbandsH376? 12ReturnH7725, my daughtersH1323, goH7725; for I amH1961 too old to have a husbandH376. If I should sayH559, I have hopeH8615, should I even have a husbandH376 to-night, and should I alsoH1571 bearH3205 sonsH1121, 13would ye wait on that account till they were grownH1431? Would ye stay on that account from having husbandsH376? No, my daughtersH1323, for I amH1961 in much moreH4480 bitterness than you; for the handH3027 of Jehovah is goneH3318 out against me. 14And they liftedH5375 up their voiceH6963 and weptH1058 againH5750. And OrpahH6204 kissedH5401 her mother-in-law, but RuthH7327 clave to her. 15And she saidH559, Behold, thy sister-in-law is goneH7725 backH7725 to her peopleH5971 and to her 1godsH430: returnH7725 after thy sister-in-law. 16And RuthH7327 saidH559, Do not intreat me to leaveH5800 thee, to returnH7725 from [following] after thee; for whither thou goest I will goH7725, and whereH834 thou lodgest I will lodge: thy peopleH5971 shall be my peopleH5971, and thy 2GodH430 my 3GodH430; 17whereH834 thou diest will I dieH4191, and there will I be buriedH6912. Jehovah do so to me, and more also, if aught but deathH4191 part me and thee! 18And when she sawH7200 that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left off speakingH1696 to her. 19And they twoH8147 wentH935 until they cameH935 to Bethlehem. And it cameH935 to pass, when they cameH935 to Bethlehem, that all the cityH5892 wasH1961 moved about them, and the [women] saidH559, Is this NaomiH5281? 20And she saidH559 to them, CallH7121 me not NaomiH5281 — callH7121 me Mara; for the AlmightyH7706 has dealt veryH3966 bitterly with me. 21I wentH1980 out fullH4392, and Jehovah has broughtH7725 me home again emptyH7387. WhyH4100 do ye callH7121 me NaomiH5281, seeing Jehovah has broughtH7725 me low, and the AlmightyH7706 has afflicted me? 22So NaomiH5281 returnedH7725, and RuthH7327 the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returnedH7725 out of the fieldsH7704 of MoabH4124; and they cameH935 to Bethlehem in the beginning of the barley-harvest.
