Luke Chapter 1

Darby Bible

1Forasmuch as manyG4183 have undertaken to draw up a relation concerningG4012 the matters fullyG4135 believed among us, 2as those who from the beginning were eye-witnesses of and attendants on the WordG3056 have deliveredG3860 them to us, 3it has seemedG1380 goodG1380 to me also, accurately acquainted from the origin with all thingsG3956, to writeG1125 to thee with method, mostG2903 excellentG2903 TheophilusG2321, 4that thou mightest knowG1921 the certainty of those thingsG3739 in which thou hast been instructedG2727. 5There was in the daysG2250 of HerodG2264, the kingG935 of Judaea, a certainG5100 priestG2409, by nameG3686 Zacharias, of the course of Abia, and his wifeG1135 of the daughtersG2364 of AaronG2, and her nameG3686 ElizabethG1665. 6And they wereG1510 both justG1342 before 1GodG2316, walkingG4198 in all the commandmentsG1785 and ordinances of the LordG2962 blamelessG273. 7And they had no childG5043, because ElizabethG1665 wasG1510 barrenG4723, and they wereG1510 both advanced in years. 8And it cameG1096 to passG1096, as he fulfilled his priestly service before 2GodG2316 in the orderG5010 of his course, 9it fell to him by lot, accordingG2596 to the customG1485 of the priesthood, to enterG1525 into the templeG3485 of the LordG2962 to burn incense. 10And all the multitudeG4128 of the peopleG2992 wereG1510 prayingG4336 without at the hourG5610 of incenseG2368. 11And an angelG32 of [the] LordG2962 appeared to him, standingG2476 on the rightG1188 of the altarG2379 of incenseG2368. 12And Zacharias was troubledG5015, seeingG3708 [him], and fearG5401 fell upon him. 13But the angelG32 saidG3004 to him, FearG5399 not, Zacharias, because thy supplicationG1162 has been heard, and thy wifeG1135 ElizabethG1665 shall bearG1080 thee a sonG5207, and thou shalt callG2564 his nameG3686 JohnG2491. 14And he shall beG1510 to thee joyG5479 and rejoicingG5463, and manyG4183 shall rejoiceG5463 at his birth. 15For he shall beG1510 greatG3173 before [the] LordG2962, and he shall drinkG4095 no wineG3631 nor strong drinkG4095; and he shall beG1510 filledG4130 with [the] HolyG40 SpiritG4151, evenG2532 from his mother's wombG2836. 16And manyG4183 of the sonsG5207 of IsraelG2474 shall he turnG1994 to [the] LordG2962 their 3GodG2316. 17And he shall goG4281 before him in [the] spiritG4151 and powerG1411 of Elias, to turnG1994 heartsG2588 of fathersG3962 to childrenG5043, and disobedientG545 ones to [the] thoughts of justG1342 [menG1342], to makeG2090 readyG2090 for [the] LordG2962 a preparedG2090 peopleG2992. 18And Zacharias saidG3004 to the angelG32, How shall I knowG1097 this, for I amG1510 an old manG3778, and my wifeG1135 advanced in years? 19And the angelG32 answeringG611, saidG3004 to him, I amG1510 GabrielG1043, who standG3936 before 4GodG2316, and I have beenG1510 sentG649 to speakG2980 to thee, and to bringG2097 these glad tidings to thee; 20and beholdG2400, thou shalt beG1510 silentG4623 and not ableG1410 to speakG2980, till the dayG2250 in which these thingsG3778 shall take placeG1096, because thou hast not believedG4100 my wordsG3056, the which shall beG1510 fulfilled in their timeG2540. 21And the peopleG2992 wereG1510 awaiting Zacharias, and they wonderedG2296 at his delayingG5549 in the templeG3485. 22But when he cameG1831 out he could not speakG2980 to them, and they recognised that he had seenG3708 a visionG3701 in the templeG3485. And he wasG1510 making signs to them, and continued dumb. 23And it cameG1096 to passG1096, whenG5613 the daysG2250 of his serviceG3009 were completed, he departedG565 to his houseG3624. 24NowG1161 after these daysG2250, ElizabethG1665 his wifeG1135 conceived, and hid herself fiveG4002 monthsG3376, sayingG3004, 25ThusG3779 has [the] LordG2962 done to me in [these] daysG2250 in which he looked upon [me] to takeG851 awayG851 my reproach among menG444. 26But in the sixthG1623 monthG3376, the angelG32 GabrielG1043 was sentG649 of 5GodG2316 to a cityG4172 of GalileeG1056, of which [the] nameG3686 [was] NazarethG3478, 27to a virginG3933 betrothedG3423 to a manG435 whose nameG3686 [was] JosephG2501, of the houseG3624 of DavidG1138; and the virgin's nameG3686 [was] MaryG3137. 28And the angelG32 cameG1525 in to her, and saidG3004, HailG5463, [thou] favoured one! the LordG2962 [is] with thee: [blessed art thou amongst women]. 29But she, [seeing] [the angel], wasG1510 troubled at his wordG3056, and reasonedG1260 in her mind what this salutation might beG1510. 30And the angelG32 saidG3004 to her, FearG5399 not, MaryG3137, for thou hast foundG2147 favour with 6GodG2316; 31and beholdG2400, thou shalt conceive in the wombG1064 and bearG5088 a sonG5207, and thou shalt callG2564 his nameG3686 JesusG2424. 32He shall beG1510 greatG3173, and shall beG1510 calledG2564 SonG5207 of [the] HighestG5310; and [the] LordG2962 7GodG2316 shall giveG1325 him the throneG2362 of DavidG1138 his fatherG3962; 33and he shall reignG936 over the houseG3624 of JacobG2384 for the agesG165, and of his kingdomG932 there shall not beG1510 an endG5056. 34But MaryG3137 saidG3004 to the angelG32, HowG4459 shall this beG1510, since I knowG1097 not a manG435? 35And the angelG32 answeringG611 saidG3004 to her, [The] HolyG40 SpiritG4151 shall comeG1904 upon thee, and powerG1411 of [the] HighestG5310 overshadowG1982 thee, wherefore the holyG40 thing alsoG2532 which shall be bornG1080 shall be calledG2564 SonG5207 of 8GodG2316. 36And beholdG2400, ElizabethG1665, thy kinswoman, she alsoG2532 has conceived a sonG5207 in her old age, and this isG1510 the sixthG1623 monthG3376 to her that wasG1510 calledG2564 barrenG4723: 37for nothing shall be impossibleG101 with 9GodG2316. 38And MaryG3137 saidG3004, BeholdG2400 the bondmaid of [the] LordG2962; be it to me accordingG2596 to thy word. And the angelG32 departedG565 from her. 39And MaryG3137, risingG450 up in those daysG2250, wentG4198 into the hillG3714 countryG3714 with haste, to a cityG4172 of JudahG2455, 40and enteredG1525 into the houseG3624 of Zacharias, and saluted ElizabethG1665. 41And it cameG1096 to passG1096, as ElizabethG1665 heardG191 the salutation of MaryG3137, the babe leapedG4640 in her wombG2836; and ElizabethG1665 was filledG4130 with [the] HolyG40 SpiritG4151, 42and cried out with a loudG3173 voice and saidG3004, BlessedG2127 [art] thou amongst womenG1135, and blessedG2127 the fruitG2590 of thy wombG2836. 43And whence [is] this to me, that the motherG3384 of my LordG2962 should comeG2064 to me? 44For beholdG2400, as the voiceG5456 of thy salutation sounded in my earsG3775, the babe leapedG4640 with joy in my wombG2836. 45And blessed [isG1510] she that has believedG4100, for there shall beG1510 a fulfilment of the things spokenG2980 to her from [the] LordG2962. 46And MaryG3137 saidG3004, My soulG5590 magnifies the LordG2962, 47and my spiritG4151 has rejoicedG21 in 10GodG2316 my Saviour. 48For he has looked upon the low estate of his bondmaid; for beholdG2400, from henceforth all generationsG1074 shall call me blessed. 49For the MightyG1415 OneG3588 has done to me greatG3173 things, and holyG40 [is] his nameG3686; 50and his mercyG1656 [is] to generationsG1074 and generationsG1074 to them that fearG5399 him. 51He has wrought strengthG2904 with his armG1023; he has scatteredG1287 haughty [ones] in the thought of their heartG2588. 52He has put down rulers from thronesG2362, and exaltedG5312 the lowly. 53He has filled the hungryG3983 with goodG18 thingsG18, and sent awayG1821 the richG4147 emptyG2756. 54He has helped IsraelG2474 his servantG3816, in order to rememberG3403 mercyG1656, 55(as he spokeG2980 to our fathersG3962,) to AbrahamG11 and to his seedG4690 for ever. 56And MaryG3137 abode with her about threeG5140 monthsG3376, and returnedG5290 to her houseG3624. 57But the timeG5550 was fulfilled for ElizabethG1665 that she should bring forthG5088, and she gave birthG5088 to a sonG5207. 58And her neighbours and kinsfolk heardG191 that [the] LordG2962 had magnifiedG3170 his mercyG1656 with her, and they rejoiced with her. 59And it cameG2064 to passG1096 on the eighthG3590 dayG2250 they cameG2064 to circumciseG4059 the childG3813, and they calledG2564 it after the nameG3686 of his fatherG3962, Zacharias. 60And his motherG3384 answeringG611 saidG3004, No; but he shall be calledG2564 JohnG2491. 61And they saidG3004 to her, There isG1510 no oneG3762 among thy kinsfolk who isG1510 calledG2564 by this nameG3686. 62And they made signs to his fatherG3962 as to what he might wishG2309 it to be calledG2564. 63And having askedG154 for a writing-table, he wroteG1125 sayingG3004, JohnG2491 isG1510 his nameG3686. And they all wonderedG2296. 64And his mouthG4750 was openedG455 immediatelyG3916, and his tongueG1100, and he spake, blessingG2127 11GodG2316. 65And fearG5401 cameG1096 upon all who dwelt round about them; and in the wholeG3650 hill-country of Judaea all these thingsG3778 were the subject of conversation. 66And all who heardG191 them laidG5087 them up in their heartG2588, sayingG3004, What then will this childG3813 beG1510? And [the] Lord's handG5495 wasG1510 with him. 67And Zacharias his fatherG3962 was filledG4130 with [the] HolyG40 SpiritG4151, and prophesiedG4395, sayingG3004, 68Blessed be [the] LordG2962 the 12GodG2316 of IsraelG2474, because he has visited and wrought redemptionG3085 for his peopleG2992, 69and raisedG1453 up a hornG2768 of deliverance for us in the houseG3624 of DavidG1138 his servantG3816; 70as he spokeG2980 by [the] mouthG4750 of his holyG40 prophetsG4396, who have been since the world began; 71deliverance from our enemiesG2190 and out of the handG5495 of all who hateG3404 us; 72to fulfil mercyG1656 with our fathersG3962 and rememberG3403 his holyG40 covenantG1242, 73[the] oathG3727 which he sworeG3660 to AbrahamG11 our fatherG3962, 74to give us, that, saved out of the handG5495 of our enemiesG2190, we should serveG3000 him without fearG870 75in piety and righteousnessG1343 before him all our daysG2250. 76And thou, childG3813, shalt be calledG2564 [the] prophetG4396 of [the] HighestG5310; for thou shalt goG4313 before the faceG4383 of [the] LordG2962 to makeG2090 readyG2090 his waysG3598; 77to giveG1325 knowledgeG1108 of deliverance to his peopleG2992 by [the] remission of their sinsG266 78on accountG1223 of [the] bowels of mercyG1656 of our 13GodG2316; wherein [the] dayspring from on highG5311 has visited us, 79to shine upon them who were sittingG2521 in darknessG4655 and in [the] shadowG4639 of deathG2288, to guide our feetG4228 into [the] wayG3598 of peaceG1515. 80— And the childG3813 grewG837 and wasG1510 strengthenedG2901 in spiritG4151; and he wasG1510 in the deserts until the dayG2250 of his shewing to IsraelG2474.
