Acts 17
American Standard Version
1NowG1161 when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they cameG2064 to ThessalonicaG2332, whereG3699 wasG1510 a synagogueG4864 of the JewsG2453: 2and PaulG3972, as his custom was, wentG1525 in unto them, and for threeG5140 sabbathG4521 days reasonedG1256 with them from the scripturesG1124, 3opening and alleging that it behooved the ChristG5547 to sufferG3958, and to riseG450 againG450 from the deadG3498; and that this JesusG2424, whom, said he, I proclaimG2605 unto you, isG1510 the ChristG5547. 4And some of them were persuadedG3982, and consorted with PaulG3972 and SilasG4609; and of the devout GreeksG1672 a greatG4183 multitudeG4128, and of the chief womenG1135 not a fewG3641. 5But the JewsG2453, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certainG5100 vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the cityG4172 on an uproar; and assaulting the houseG3614 of JasonG2394, they soughtG2212 to bringG4254 them forth to the people. 6And when they foundG2147 them not, they dragged JasonG2394 and certainG5100 brethren before the rulers of the cityG4173, cryingG994, These that have turned the worldG3625 upside down are come hither alsoG2532; 7whom JasonG2394 hath received: and these all act contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, sayingG3004 that there isG1510 another kingG935, oneG3739 JesusG2424. 8And they troubledG5015 the multitudeG3793 and the rulers of the cityG4173, when they heardG191 these thingsG3778. 9And when they had takenG2983 security from JasonG2394 and the restG3062, they let them goG630.
10And the brethren immediatelyG2112 sent away PaulG3972 and SilasG4609 by nightG3571 unto Beroea: who when they were comeG3854 thither went into the synagogueG4864 of the JewsG2453. 11NowG1161 these wereG1510 more noble than those in ThessalonicaG2332, in that they receivedG1209 the wordG3056 with all readinessG4288 of mind, examining the scripturesG1124 daily, whether these thingsG3778 wereG1510 soG3779. 12ManyG4183 of them thereforeG3767 believedG4100; alsoG2532 of the Greek womenG1135 of honorable estate, and of menG435, not a fewG3641. 13But whenG5613 the JewsG2453 of ThessalonicaG2332 had knowledge that the wordG3056 of GodG2316 was proclaimedG2605 of PaulG3972 at Beroea alsoG2532, they cameG2064 thither likewise, stirring up and troubling the multitudesG3793. 14And then immediatelyG2112 the brethren sent forthG1821 PaulG3972 to goG4198 as farG2193 as to the seaG2281: and SilasG4609 and TimothyG5095 abode there still. 15But they that conducted PaulG3972 broughtG71 him as farG2193 as AthensG116: and receivingG2983 a commandmentG1785 unto SilasG4609 and TimothyG5095 that they should comeG2064 to him with all speed, they departed.
16NowG1161 while PaulG3972 waited for them at AthensG116, his spiritG4151 wasG1510 provoked within him as he beheld the cityG4172 full of idols. 17So he reasonedG1256 in the synagogueG4864 with the JewsG2453 and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every dayG2250 with them that met him. 18And certainG5100 alsoG2532 of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some saidG3004, What would this babbler sayG3004? others, He seemeth to beG1510 a setter forth of strangeG3581 gods: because he preached JesusG2424 and the resurrectionG386. 19And they took holdG1949 of him, and broughtG71 him unto the Areopagus, sayingG3004, May we knowG1097 what this newG2537 teachingG1322 is, which is spokenG2980 by thee? 20For thou bringest certainG5100 strangeG3579 thingsG3778 to our earsG189: we would knowG1097 thereforeG3767 what these thingsG3778 mean. 21(NowG1161 all the AtheniansG117 and the strangersG3581 sojourning there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tellG3004 or to hearG191 some newG2537 thingG3762.) 22And PaulG3972 stoodG2476 in the midstG3319 of the Areopagus, and saidG5346,
Ye menG435 of Athens, in all thingsG3956 I perceive that ye are very religious. 23For as I passedG1330 along, and observed the objects of your worshipG4574, I foundG2147 alsoG2532 an altar with this inscription, TO AN UNKNOWNG50 GODG2316. What thereforeG3767 ye worshipG4574 in ignorance, this I set forth unto you. 24The GodG2316 that madeG4160 the worldG2889 and all thingsG3778 therein, he, being LordG2962 of heavenG3772 and earthG1093, dwelleth not in templesG3485 madeG4160 with handsG5499; 25neither is he served by men’s handsG5495, as though he needed anythingG5100, seeing he himself giveth to all lifeG2222, and breath, and all thingsG3956; 26and he madeG4160 of oneG1520 every nationG1484 of menG444 to dwellG2730 on all the faceG4383 of the earthG1093, having determined their appointed seasonsG2540, and the bounds of their habitation; 27that they should seekG2212 GodG2316, if haply they might feel after him and findG2147 him, though he is not farG3112 from each oneG1520 of us: 28for in him we liveG2198, and moveG2795, and have our beingG1510; as certainG5100 evenG2532 of your own poets have saidG3004,
29BeingG1510 then the offspringG1085 of GodG2316, we oughtG3784 not to thinkG3543 that the Godhead isG1510 like unto goldG5557, or silverG696, or stoneG3037, graven by art and device of manG444. 30The timesG5550 of ignoranceG52 thereforeG3767 GodG2316 overlooked; but nowG3568 he commandeth menG444 that they should all everywhereG3837 repentG3340: 31inasmuch as he hath appointedG3724 a dayG2250 in which he will judgeG2919 the worldG3625 in righteousnessG1343 by the manG435 whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all menG435, in that he hath raisedG450 him from the deadG3498.
32NowG1161 when they heardG191 of the resurrectionG386 of the deadG3498, some mocked; but others saidG3004, We will hearG191 thee concerningG4012 this yet againG3825. 33ThusG3779 PaulG3972 wentG1831 out from among them. 34But certainG5100 menG435 clave unto him, and believedG4100: among whom alsoG2532 was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a womanG1135 namedG3686 Damaris, and othersG2087 with them.
