Acts 12
Darby Bible
1At that timeG2540 HerodG2264 the kingG935 laidG1911 his handsG5495 on some of those of the assemblyG1577 to do them hurt, 2and slew JamesG2385, the brotherG80 of JohnG2491, with the swordG3162. 3And seeingG3708 that it wasG1510 pleasingG701 to the JewsG2453, he went on to take PeterG4074 alsoG2532: (and they wereG1510 the daysG2250 of unleavenedG106 bread:) 4whom having seizedG4084 he putG5087 in prisonG5438, having deliveredG3860 him to fourG5064 quaternions of soldiersG4757 to keepG5442, purposing after the passoverG3957 to bringG321 him out to the peopleG2992. 5PeterG4074 thereforeG3767 wasG1510 keptG5083 in the prisonG5438; but unceasing prayerG4335 wasG1510 made by the assemblyG1577 to 1GodG2316 concerningG4012 him. 6And whenG3753 HerodG2264 wasG1510 going to bringG4254 him forth, that nightG3571 PeterG4074 wasG1510 sleepingG2837 between twoG1417 soldiersG4757, boundG1210 with twoG1417 chainsG254, and guardsG5441 before the doorG2374 keptG5083 the prisonG5438. 7And lo, an angelG32 of [the] LordG2962 cameG2186 there, and a lightG5457 shoneG2989 in the prison: and having smitten the sideG4125 of PeterG4074, he roused him up, sayingG3004, RiseG450 up quickly. And his chainsG254 fell off his handsG5495. 8And the angelG32 saidG3004 to him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandalsG4547. And he did so. And he saysG3004 to him, Cast thine upper garmentG2440 about thee and followG190 me. 9And goingG1831 forthG1831 he followedG190 [him] and did not know that what wasG1510 happeningG1096 by means of the angelG32 wasG1510 real, but supposed he sawG1492 a visionG3705. 10And having passedG1330 through a firstG4413 and secondG1208 guard, they cameG2064 to the ironG4603 gateG4439 which leads into the cityG4172, which openedG455 to them of itself; and goingG1330 forthG1831 they wentG1831 down oneG1520 streetG4505, and immediatelyG2112 the angelG32 left him. 11And PeterG4074, being comeG1096 to himself, saidG3004, NowG3568 I know certainly that [the] LordG2962 has sent forthG1821 his angelG32 and has taken me out of the handG5495 of HerodG2264 and all the expectationG4329 of the peopleG2992 of the JewsG2453. 12And having become clearly conscious [in himself], he cameG2064 to the houseG3614 of MaryG3137, the motherG3384 of JohnG2491 who wasG1510 surnamed MarkG3138, whereG3757 wereG1510 manyG2425 gathered togetherG4867 and prayingG4336. 13And when he had knockedG2925 at the doorG2374 of the entry, a maid cameG4334 to listen, by nameG3686 Rhoda; 14and having recognised the voiceG5456 of PeterG4074, through joyG5479 did not openG455 the entry, but running in, reportedG518 that PeterG4074 was standingG2476 before the entry. 15And they saidG3004 to her, Thou art mad. But she maintained that it wasG1510 soG3779. And they saidG3004, It isG1510 his angelG32. 16But PeterG4074 continuedG1961 knockingG2925: and having openedG455, they sawG3708 him and were astonished. 17And having made a sign to them with his handG5495 to be silentG4601, he related [to them] howG4459 the LordG2962 had brought him out of prisonG5438; and he saidG3004, ReportG518 these thingsG3778 to JamesG2385 and to the brethren. And he wentG1831 out and wentG1831 to another placeG5117. 18And when it wasG1510 dayG2250 there wasG1510 no smallG3641 disturbanceG5017 among the soldiersG4757, what thenG1161 wasG1510 becomeG1096 of PeterG4074. 19And HerodG2264 having soughtG1934 him and not foundG2147 him, having examined the guardsG5441, commandedG2753 [them] to be executed. And he went downG2718 from Judaea to CaesareaG2542 and stayedG1304 [there]. 20And he wasG1510 in bitter hostility with [the] Tyrians and Sidonians; but they came to him with oneG3661 accordG3661, and, having gained Blastus the king's chamberlain, sought peaceG1515, because their countryG5561 wasG1510 nourishedG5142 by the king's. 21And on a set dayG2250, clothed in royalG937 apparelG2066 and sittingG2523 on the elevated seatG968 [of honour], HerodG2264 made a public oration to them. 22And the people cried out, A 2god's voiceG5456 and not a man's. 23And immediatelyG3916 an angelG32 of [the] LordG2962 smote him, because he did not giveG1325 the gloryG1391 to 3GodG2316, and he expired, eaten of worms. 24But the wordG3056 of 4GodG2316 grewG837 and spread itself. 25And BarnabasG921 and SaulG4569 returnedG5290 from JerusalemG2419, having fulfilled the serviceG1248 [entrusted to them], takingG4838 alsoG2532 with them JohnG2491, surnamed MarkG3138.
