John 19

(Isaiah 50:4–11; Matthew 27:27–31; Mark 15:16–20; Luke 22:63–65)

1ThenG3767 PilateG4091 tookG2983 JesusG2424 andG2532 had Him floggedG3146. 2TheG3588 soldiersG4757 twisted togetherG4120 a crownG4735 ofG1537 thornsG173, set it onG2007 HisG846 headG2776, andG2532 dressedG4016 HimG846 in a purpleG4210 robeG2440. 3AndG2532 they went upG2064 toG4314 Him again and againG846, sayingG2036, “HailG5463, KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453!” andG2532 slapping Him in the faceG1325G846G4475.

4Once againG3825 PilateG4091 cameG1831 outG1854 andG2532 saidG3004 toG846 the Jews, “LookG2400, I am bringingG71 HimG846 outG1854 to youG4771 toG2443 let you knowG1097 thatG3754 I findG2147 noG3762 basis for a chargeG156 againstG1722 HimG846.” 5When JesusG2424 cameG1831 outG1854 wearingG5409 theG3588 crownG4735 of thornsG174 andG2532 theG3588 purpleG4210 robeG2440, Pilate saidG3004 to themG846, “Here is theG3588 manG444!”

6

As soon asG3753 theG3588 chief priestsG749 andG2532 officersG5257 sawG3708 HimG846, they shoutedG2905G3004, “CrucifyG4717 Him! CrucifyG4717 Him!”

“You takeG2983 HimG846 andG2532 crucifyG4717 Him,” PilateG4091 repliedG3004G846, “forG1063 IG1473 findG2147 noG3756 basis for a chargeG156 againstG1722 HimG846.”

7“WeG1473 haveG2192 a lawG3551,” answeredG611 theG3588 JewsG2453, “andG2532 according toG2596 that lawG3551 He mustG3784 dieG599, becauseG3754 He declaredG4160 Himself to beG1438 the SonG5207 of GodG2316.”

8

WhenG3753 PilateG4091 heardG191 thisG3778 statementG3056, he was even more afraidG3123G5399, 9andG2532 he wentG1525 backG3825 intoG1519 theG3588 PraetoriumG4232. “WhereG4159 areG1510 You fromG4771?” he askedG3004.

ButG1161 JesusG2424 gave noG3756G1325G846 answerG612.

10SoG3767 PilateG4091 saidG3004 to HimG846, “Do You refuse to speakG3756G2980 to meG1473? Do You not knowG3756G1492 thatG3754 I haveG2192 authorityG1849 to releaseG630 YouG4771 andG2532 authorityG2192G1849 to crucifyG4717 YouG4771?”

11JesusG2424 answeredG611, “You would haveG2192 noG3756 authorityG1849 overG3762G2596 MeG1473 ifG1487 it wereG1510 notG3361 givenG1325 to youG4771 from aboveG509. ThereforeG1223 theG3588 one who handed Me overG3860G1473 to youG4771 is guilty ofG2192 greaterG3173 sinG266.”

12From then onG1537G3778, PilateG4091 triedG2212 to releaseG630 HimG846, butG1161 theG3588 JewsG2453 kept shoutingG2905G3004, “IfG1437 you releaseG630 thisG3778 man, you areG1510 noG3756 friendG5384 of CaesarG2541. AnyoneG3956 whoG3588 declaresG4160 himselfG1438 a kingG935 is defyingG483 CaesarG2541.”

13When PilateG4091 heardG191 theseG3778 wordsG3056, he broughtG71 JesusG2424 outG1854 andG2532 satG2523 onG1909 the judgment seatG968 atG1519 a placeG5117 calledG3004 the Stone PavementG3038, which in HebrewG14471 is GabbathaG1042. 14It wasG1510 the day of PreparationG3904 for theG3588 PassoverG3957, aboutG5613 the sixthG1623 hourG5610.2 AndG2532 Pilate saidG3004 to theG3588 JewsG2453, “Here isG2400 yourG4771 KingG935!”

15At thisG3767, they shoutedG2905, “AwayG142 with HimG1565! AwayG142 with Him! CrucifyG4717 HimG846!”

“Shall I crucifyG4717 yourG4771 KingG935?” PilateG4091 askedG3004G846.

“We haveG2192 noG3756 kingG935 butG1487G3361 CaesarG2541,” repliedG611 theG3588 chief priestsG749.

The Crucifixion

(Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:32–44; Mark 15:21–32; Luke 23:26–43)

16ThenG3767G5119 Pilate handed Jesus overG3860G846 toG2443 be crucifiedG4717, and the soldiers tookG3880 Him awayG2424. 17CarryingG941 His ownG1438 crossG4716, He went outG1831 toG1519 The PlaceG3588G3004G5117 of the SkullG2898, whichG3739 in HebrewG1447 is calledG3004 GolgothaG1115.

18There they crucifiedG4717 HimG846, andG2532 withG3326 HimG846 twoG1417 othersG243, one on each sideG1782G2532, with JesusG2424 in the middleG3319.

19

PilateG4091 alsoG2532 had a noticeG1125G5102 postedG5087 onG1909 theG3588 crossG4716. It readG1510G1125:

JESUSG2424 OFG3588 NAZARETHG3480,

THEG3588 KINGG935 OF THEG3588 JEWSG2453.

20

ManyG4183 of theG3588 JewsG2453 readG314 thisG3778 signG5102, becauseG3754 theG3588 placeG5117 whereG3699 JesusG2424 was crucifiedG4717 wasG1510 nearG1451 theG3588 cityG4172, andG2532 it wasG1510 writtenG1125 in HebrewG1447, LatinG4515, and GreekG1676. 21SoG3767 theG3588 chief priestsG749 of theG3588 JewsG2453 saidG2036 to PilateG4091, “Do notG3361 writeG1125, ‘TheG3588 KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453,’ but onlyG235 thatG3754 HeG1565 saidG2036, ‘I amG1510 the KingG935 of theG3588 JewsG2453.’”

22

PilateG4091 answeredG611, “WhatG3739 I have writtenG1125, I have writtenG1125.”

23

WhenG3753 theG3588 soldiersG4757 had crucifiedG4717 JesusG2424, they dividedG2983G2532G4160 HisG846 garmentsG2440 into fourG5064 partsG3313, one for eachG1538 soldierG4757, with theG3588 tunicG5509 remaining. It wasG1510 seamlessG729, wovenG5307 in one pieceG3650G1223 fromG1537 top to bottomG509. 24SoG3767 they saidG2036 toG4314 one anotherG240, “Let us not tear itG3361G4977G846. InsteadG235, let us cast lotsG2975 to seeG4012 whoG5101 will get itG846.” This was toG2443 fulfillG4137 theG3588 ScriptureG1124G3588G3004:

“They dividedG1266 MyG1473 garmentsG2440 among themG1438,andG2532 castG906 lotsG2819 forG1909 MyG1473 clothingG2441.”3

SoG3767 thatG3778 is what theG3588 soldiersG4757 didG3303G4160.

25NearG3844 theG3588 crossG4716 of JesusG2424 stoodG2476 HisG846 motherG3384 andG2532 her sisterG79, as well as MaryG3137 theG3588 wife of ClopasG2832 andG2532 MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094. 26When JesusG2424 sawG3708 His motherG3384 andG2532 theG3588 discipleG3101 whomG3739 He lovedG25 standing nearbyG3936, He saidG3004 toG3588 His motherG3384, “WomanG1135, hereG2400 is yourG4771 sonG5207.” 27ThenG1534 He saidG3004 to theG3588 discipleG3101, “HereG2400 is yourG4771 motherG3384.” SoG2532 fromG575 thatG1565 hourG5610, this discipleG3101 tookG2983 herG846 intoG1519 his home.

The Death of Jesus

(Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:45–56; Mark 15:33–41; Luke 23:44–49)

28AfterG3326 thisG3778, knowingG1492 thatG3754 everythingG3956 had now been accomplishedG2235G5055, and toG2443 fulfillG5048 theG3588 ScriptureG1124, JesusG2424 saidG3004, “I am thirstyG1372.”4 29A jarG4632 ofG3324 sour wineG36905 was sittingG2749 there. SoG3767 they soakedG3324 a spongeG4699 in the wineG3690, put it onG4060 a stalk of hyssopG5301, and liftedG4374 itG846 toG3588 His mouthG4750.6 30WhenG3753 JesusG2424 had receivedG2983 theG3588 sour wineG3690, He saidG2036, “It is finishedG5055.” AndG2532 bowingG2827 His headG2776, He yielded upG3860 His spiritG4151.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

(Zechariah 12:10–14)

31It wasG1510 the day of PreparationG3904, and the next dayG2250 wasG1510 a HighG3173 SabbathG4521. In order thatG2443 theG3588 bodiesG4983 would not remainG3361G3306 onG1909 theG3588 crossG4716 duringG1722 theG3588 SabbathG4521, theG3588 JewsG2453 askedG2065 PilateG4091 to haveG2443 theG3588 legsG4628 brokenG2608 andG2532 the bodies removedG142. 32SoG3767 theG3588 soldiersG4757 cameG2064 andG2532 brokeG2608 theG3588 legsG4628 of theG3588 firstG4413 man whoG3588 had been crucified withG4957 Jesus, andG2532 those of theG3588 otherG243.

33ButG1161 whenG5613 they cameG2064 toG1909 JesusG2424 and saw thatG3708 HeG846 was alreadyG2235 deadG2348, they did not breakG3756G2608 HisG846 legsG4628. 34InsteadG235, oneG1520 of theG3588 soldiersG4757 piercedG3572 HisG846 sideG4125 with a spearG3057, andG2532 immediatelyG2112 bloodG129 andG2532 waterG5204 flowed outG1831. 35TheG3588 one who sawG3708 it has testified to thisG3140, andG2532 hisG846 testimonyG3141 isG1510 trueG228. HeG1565 knowsG1492 thatG3754 he is tellingG3004 the truthG227, so thatG2443 youG4771 alsoG2532 may believeG4100.

36NowG1063 these thingsG3778 happenedG1096 so thatG2443 theG3588 ScriptureG1124 would be fulfilledG4137: “Not oneG3756 of HisG846 bonesG3747 will be brokenG4937.”7 37AndG2532G3825, as anotherG2087 ScriptureG1124 saysG3004: “They will lookG3708 onG1519 theG3739 One they have piercedG1574.”8

The Burial of Jesus

(Isaiah 53:9–12; Matthew 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; Luke 23:50–56)

38AfterwardG1161G3326G3778, JosephG2501 ofG575 ArimatheaG707, who wasG1510 a discipleG3101 of JesusG2424 (butG1161 secretlyG2928 forG1223 fearG5401 of theG3588 JewsG2453), askedG2065 PilateG4091 toG2443 let him removeG142 theG3588 bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. PilateG4091 gave him permissionG2010, soG3767 he cameG2064 andG2532 removedG142 HisG846 bodyG4983. 39NicodemusG3530, whoG3588 had previously comeG2064G3588G4413 toG4314 Jesus at nightG3571, alsoG2532 broughtG2064G5342 a mixtureG3395 of myrrhG4666 andG2532 aloesG250, aboutG5613 seventy-five poundsG1540G3046.9 40SoG3767 they tookG2983 theG3588 bodyG4983 of JesusG2424 andG2532 wrappedG1210 itG846 in linen clothsG3608 withG3326 theG3588 spicesG759, according toG2531G1510 the JewishG3588G2453 burialG1779 customG1485.

41NowG1161 there wasG1510 a gardenG2779 inG1722 theG3588 placeG5117 whereG3699 Jesus was crucifiedG4717, andG2532 inG1722 theG3588 gardenG2779 a newG2537 tombG3419 inG1722 whichG3739 no oneG3762 had yet beenG1510G3764 laidG5087. 42AndG3767 because it wasG1223 theG3588 JewishG3588G2453 day of PreparationG3904 and theG3588 tombG3419 wasG1510 nearbyG1451, they placedG5087 JesusG2424 thereG1563.
