The Unrighteous Steward
1NowG1161 He was alsoG2532 sayingG3004 to the disciplesG3101, “There was a richG4145 manG444 whoG3739 hadG2192 a managerG3623, and thisG3778 manager was 1reportedG1225 to him as 2squanderingG1287 his possessionsG5225. 2And he calledG5455 him and saidG3004 to him, ‘WhatG5101 is thisG3778 I hearG191 aboutG4012 you? GiveG591 an accountingG3056 of your managementG3622, for you canG1410 noG3756 longerG2089 be managerG3621.’ 3The managerG3623 saidG3004 to himselfG1438, ‘WhatG5101 shall I doG4160, sinceG3754 my 3masterG2962 is takingG851 the managementG3622 awayG851 from me? I amG2480 not strongG2480 enoughG2480 to digG4626; I am ashamedG153 to begG1871. 4I knowG1097 whatG5101 I shall doG4160, soG2443 that whenG3752 I am removedG3179 from the managementG3622 people will welcomeG1209 me into their homesG3624.’ 5And he summonedG4341 eachG1538 oneG1520 of his 4master’sG2962 debtorsG5533, and he began sayingG3004 to the firstG4413, ‘HowG4214 muchG4214 do you oweG3784 my masterG2962?’ 6And he saidG3004, ‘A hundredG1540 5measuresG943 of oilG1637.’ And he saidG3004 to him, ‘TakeG1209 your billG1121, and sitG2523 downG2523 quicklyG5030 and writeG1125 fiftyG4004.’ 7ThenG1899 he saidG3004 to anotherG2087, ‘And howG4214 muchG4214 do you oweG3784?’ And he saidG3004, ‘A hundredG1540 6measuresG2884 of wheatG4621.’ He saidG3004 to him, ‘TakeG1209 your billG1121, and writeG1125 eightyG3589.’ 8And his 7masterG2962 praisedG1867 the unrighteousG93 managerG3623 becauseG3754 he had actedG4160 shrewdlyG5430; for the sonsG5207 of 8thisG3778 ageG165 are moreG5429 shrewdG5429 in relationG1519 to their ownG1438 9kindG1074 thanG5228 the 10sonsG5207 of lightG5457. 9And I sayG3004 to you, 11makeG4160 friendsG5384 for yourselvesG1438 by meansG1537 of the 1213wealthG3126 of unrighteousnessG93, soG2443 that whenG3752 it failsG1587, 14they will receiveG1209 you into the eternalG166 dwellingsG4633.
10“15He who is faithfulG4103 in a veryG1646 littleG1646 thingG1646 is faithfulG4103 alsoG2532 in muchG4183; and he who is unrighteousG94 in a veryG1646 littleG1646 thingG1646 is unrighteousG94 alsoG2532 in muchG4183. 11ThereforeG3767 ifG1487 you have not beenG1096 faithfulG4103 in the use of unrighteousG94 1617wealthG3126, whoG5101 will entrustG4100 the trueG228 riches to you? 12And ifG1487 you have not beenG1096 faithfulG4103 in the use of that which is another’sG245, whoG5101 will giveG1325 you that which is your own? 1318NoG3762 19servantG3610 canG1410 serveG1398 twoG1417 mastersG2962; for eitherG2228 he will hateG3404 the oneG1520 and loveG25 the otherG2087, orG2228 elseG2228 he will be devotedG472 to oneG1520 and despiseG2706 the otherG2087. You cannotG1410G3756 serveG1398 GodG2316 and 2021wealthG3126.”
14NowG1161 the PhariseesG5330, who were 22loversG5366 of moneyG5366, were listeningG191 to allG3956 theseG3778 thingsG3778 and 23were scoffingG1592 at Him. 15And He saidG3004 to them, “You are thoseG3588 who 24justifyG1344 yourselvesG1438 25in the sightG1799 of menG444, but 26GodG2316 knowsG1097 your heartsG2588; for that which is highlyG5308 esteemedG5308 amongG1722 menG444 is detestableG946 27in the sightG1799 of GodG2316.
16“28The LawG3551 and the ProphetsG4396 were proclaimed untilG3360 JohnG2491; sinceG575 that timeG5119 29the gospelG2097 of the kingdomG932 of GodG2316 30has been preachedG2097, and everyoneG3956 is forcingG971 his wayG971 into it. 1731But it is easierG2123 for heavenG3772 and earthG1093 to passG3928 awayG3928 thanG2228 for oneG1520 32strokeG2762 of a letterG2762 of the LawG3551 to failG4098.
18“33EveryoneG3956 who 34divorcesG630 his wifeG1135 and marriesG1060 anotherG2087 commitsG3431 adulteryG3431, and he who marriesG1060 one who is 35divorcedG630 from a husbandG435 commitsG3431 adulteryG3431.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19“NowG1161 there was a richG4145 manG444, and he habitually dressedG1737 in purpleG4209 and fineG1040 linenG1040, joyouslyG2165 livingG2165 in splendorG2988 everyG2596 dayG2250. 20And a poorG4434 manG4434 namedG3686 LazarusG2976 36was laidG906 at his gateG4440, coveredG1669 with soresG1669, 21and longingG1937 to be fedG5526 with the crumbs which were fallingG4098 from the richG4145 man’sG4145 tableG5132; besidesG235, evenG2532 the dogsG2965 were comingG2064 and lickingG1952 his soresG1668. 22NowG1161 the poorG4434 manG4434 diedG599 and was carriedG667 awayG667 by the angelsG32 to 37Abraham’sG11 bosomG2859; and the richG4145 manG4145 alsoG2532 diedG599 and was buriedG2290. 23In 38HadesG86 he liftedG1869 up his eyesG3788, beingG5225 in tormentG931, and sawG3708 AbrahamG11 farG3113 awayG575G3113 and LazarusG2976 in his bosomG2859. 24And he criedG5455 out and saidG3004, ‘39FatherG3962 AbrahamG11, haveG1653 mercyG1653 on me, and sendG3992 LazarusG2976 soG2443 that he may dipG911 the tipG206 of his fingerG1147 in waterG5204 and coolG2711 off my tongueG1100, for I amG3600 in agonyG3600 in 40thisG3778 flameG5395.’ 25But AbrahamG11 saidG3004, ‘ChildG5043, rememberG3403 that 41duringG1722 your lifeG2222 you receivedG618 your goodG18 thingsG18, and likewiseG3668 LazarusG2976 badG2556 thingsG2556; but nowG3568 he is being comfortedG3870 hereG5602, and you are in agonyG3600. 26And 42besidesG1722 allG3956 thisG3778, betweenG3342 us and you there is a greatG3173 chasmG5490 fixedG4741, soG3704 that thoseG3588 who wishG2309 to comeG1224 overG1224 from hereG1759 to you will not be ableG1410, and that noneG3366 may crossG1276 overG1276 from thereG1564 to us.’ 27And he saidG3004, ‘ThenG3767 I begG2065 you, fatherG3962, that you sendG3992 him to my father’sG3962 houseG3624-- 28for I haveG2192 fiveG4002 brothersG80--in orderG3704 that he may 43warnG1263 them, soG2443 that they will not alsoG2532 comeG2064 to thisG3778 placeG5117 of tormentG931.’ 29But AbrahamG11 saidG3004, ‘They haveG2192 44MosesG3475 and the ProphetsG4396; let them hearG191 them.’ 30But he saidG3004, ‘NoG3780, 45fatherG3962 AbrahamG11, but ifG1437 someoneG5100 goesG4198 to them from the deadG3498, they will repentG3340!’ 31But he saidG3004 to him, ‘IfG1487 they do not listenG191 to MosesG3475 and the ProphetsG4396, they will not be persuadedG3982 evenG3761 ifG1437 someoneG5100 risesG450 from the deadG3498.’”
