Jesus’ Authority Questioned

11On oneG1520 of the daysG2250 while 2He was teachingG1321 the peopleG2992 in the templeG2413 and 3preachingG2097 the gospelG2097, the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the scribesG1122 with the eldersG4245 4confrontedG2186 Him, 2and they spokeG3004, sayingG3004 to Him, “TellG3004 us by whatG4169 authorityG1849 You are doingG4160 theseG3778 thingsG3778, orG2228 whoG5101 is the one who gaveG1325 You thisG3778 authorityG1849?” 3Jesus answeredG611 and saidG3004 to them, “I will alsoG2532 askG2065 you a 5questionG3056, and you tellG3004 Me: 4Was the baptismG908 of JohnG2491 from heavenG3772 orG2228 from menG444?” 5They reasonedG4817 amongG4314 themselvesG1438, sayingG3004, “IfG1437 we sayG3004, ‘From heavenG3772,’ He will sayG3004, ‘WhyG1223G5101 did you not believeG4100 him?’ 6But ifG1437 we sayG3004, ‘From menG444,’ allG537 the peopleG2992 will stoneG2642 us to deathG2642, for they are convincedG3982 that JohnG2491 was a 6prophetG4396.” 7SoG2532 they answeredG611 that they did not knowG3609 whereG4159 it came from. 8And JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “NorG3761 7will I tellG3004 you by whatG4169 authorityG1849 I doG4160 theseG3778 thingsG3778.”

Parable of the Vine-growers

98And He beganG757 to tellG3004 the peopleG2992 thisG3778 parableG3850: “A manG444 plantedG5452 a vineyardG290 and rentedG1554 it out to 9vine-growersG1092, and wentG589 on a journeyG589 for a longG2425 timeG5550. 10At the harvest timeG2540 he sentG649 a slaveG1401 to the vine-growersG1092, soG2443 that they would giveG1325 him some of the produceG2590 of the vineyardG290; but the vine-growersG1092 beatG1194 him and sentG1821 him awayG1821 empty-handedG2756. 11And he proceededG4369 to sendG3992 anotherG2087 slaveG1401; and they beatG1194 him alsoG2548 and treatedG818 him shamefullyG818 and sentG1821 him awayG1821 empty-handedG2756. 12And he proceededG4369 to sendG3992 a thirdG5154; and thisG3778 oneG3778 alsoG2532 they woundedG5135 and castG1544 out. 13The 10ownerG2962 of the vineyardG290 saidG3004, ‘WhatG5101 shall I doG4160? I will sendG3992 my belovedG27 sonG5207; perhapsG2481 they will 11respectG1788 him.’ 14But when the vine-growersG1092 sawG3708 him, they reasonedG1260 with oneG240 anotherG240, sayingG3004, ‘ThisG3778 is the heirG2818; let us killG615 him soG2443 that the inheritanceG2817 will be oursG1473.’ 15SoG2532 they threwG1544 him out of the vineyardG290 and killedG615 him. WhatG5101, thenG3767, will the 12ownerG2962 of the vineyardG290 doG4160 to them? 16He will comeG2064 and 13destroyG622 theseG3778 vine-growersG1092 and will giveG1325 the vineyardG290 to othersG243.” WhenG1161 they heardG191 it, they saidG3004, “14May it neverG3361 be!” 17But 15Jesus lookedG1689 at them and saidG3004, “WhatG5101 thenG3767 is thisG3778 that is writtenG1125: ‘16The stoneG3037 whichG3739 the buildersG3618 rejectedG593, ThisG3778 becameG1096 17the chiefG2776 cornerG1137 stone’? 1818EveryoneG3956 who fallsG4098 on that stoneG3037 will be brokenG4917 to piecesG4917; but on whomeverG3739G302 it fallsG4098, it will scatterG3039 him likeG3039 dustG3039.”

Tribute to Caesar

19The scribesG1122 and the chiefG749 priestsG749 19triedG2212 to layG1911 handsG5495 on Him that veryG846 hourG5610, and they fearedG5399 the peopleG2992; for they understoodG1097 that He spokeG3004 thisG3778 parableG3850 againstG4314 them. 2020SoG5620 they watchedG3906 Him, and sentG649 spiesG1455 who 21pretendedG5271 to be righteousG1342, in orderG2443 22that they might 23catchG1949 Him in some statementG3056, soG5620 that they could deliverG3860 Him to the ruleG746 and the authorityG1849 of 24the governorG2232. 21They questionedG1905 Him, sayingG3004, “TeacherG1320, we knowG3609 that You speakG3004 and teachG1321 correctlyG3723, and You 25are not partialG2983G4383 to any, but teachG1321 the wayG3598 of GodG2316 in truthG225. 22Is it 26lawfulG1832 for us 27to payG1325 taxesG5411 to CaesarG2541, orG2228 not?” 23But He detectedG2657 their trickeryG3834 and saidG3004 to them, 24“ShowG1166 Me a 28denariusG1220. WhoseG5101 29likenessG1504 and inscriptionG1923 does it haveG2192?” They saidG3004, “Caesar’sG2541.” 25And He saidG3004 to them, “ThenG5106 30renderG591 to CaesarG2541 the things that are Caesar’sG2541, and to GodG2316 the things that are God’sG2316.” 26And they were unableG3756G2480 to 3132catchG1949 Him in a sayingG4487 in the presenceG1727 of the peopleG2992; and beingG2296 amazedG2296 at His answerG612, they becameG4601 silentG4601.

Is There a Resurrection?

2733NowG1161 there cameG4334 to Him someG5100 of the 34SadduceesG4523 (who sayG483 that there is noG3361 resurrectionG386), 28and they questionedG1905 Him, sayingG3004, “TeacherG1320, MosesG3475 wroteG1125 for us that 35ifG1437 a man’sG5100 brotherG80 diesG599, havingG2192 a wifeG1135, and he is childlessG815, his brotherG80 should 36marryG2983 the wifeG1135 and raiseG1817 up childrenG4690 to his brotherG80. 29NowG3767 there were sevenG2033 brothersG80; and the firstG4413 tookG2983 a wifeG1135 and diedG599 childlessG815; 30and the secondG1208 31and the thirdG5154 37marriedG2983 her; and in the sameG5615 wayG5615 38allG3588 sevenG2033 39diedG599, leavingG2641 noG3756 childrenG5043. 32FinallyG5306 the womanG1135 diedG599 alsoG2532. 33In the resurrectionG386 thereforeG3767, whichG5101 one’sG846 wifeG1135 will she be? For 40allG3588 sevenG2033 41hadG2192 married her.”

34JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “The sonsG5207 of 42thisG3778 ageG165 marryG1060 and are givenG1061 in marriageG1061, 35but thoseG3588 who are consideredG2661 worthyG2661 to attainG5177 to 43that ageG165 and the resurrectionG386 from the deadG3498, neitherG3777 marryG1060 norG3777 are givenG1061 in marriageG1061; 36for they cannotG1410G3761 evenG3761 dieG599 anymoreG2089, becauseG1063 they are likeG2465 angelsG2465, and are 44sonsG5207 of GodG2316, beingG1510 sonsG5207 of the resurrectionG386. 37But that the deadG3498 are raisedG1453, evenG2532 MosesG3475 showedG3377, in 45the passage about the burning bushG942, whereG5613 he callsG3004 the LordG2962 46the GodG2316 of AbrahamG11, and the GodG2316 of IsaacG2464, and the GodG2316 of JacobG2384. 3847NowG1161 He is not the GodG2316 of the deadG3498 but of the livingG2198; for 48allG3956 liveG2198 to Him.” 39SomeG5100 of the scribesG1122 answeredG611 and saidG3004, “TeacherG1320, You have spokenG3004 wellG2573.” 40For 49they did not haveG5111 courageG5111 to questionG1905 Him anyG3765 longerG3765 about anythingG3762.

4150ThenG2532 He saidG3004 to them, “HowG4459 is it that they sayG3004 51the ChristG5547 is 52David’sG1160 sonG5207? 42For DavidG1160 himselfG846 saysG3004 in the bookG976 of PsalmsG5568, ‘53The LordG2962 saidG3004 to my LordG2962, “SitG2521 at My rightG1188 handG1188,4354UntilG2193 I makeG5087 Your enemiesG2190 a footstoolG5286 for Your feetG4228.”’ 44ThereforeG3767 DavidG1160 callsG2564 Him ‘LordG2962,’ and howG4459 is He his sonG5207?”

4555And while allG3956 the peopleG2992 were listeningG191, He saidG3004 to the disciplesG3101, 46“BewareG4337 of the scribesG1122, 56who likeG2309 to walkG4043 aroundG4043 in longG4749 robesG4749, and loveG5368 respectful greetingsG783 in the marketG58 placesG58, and chiefG4410 seatsG4410 in the synagoguesG4864 and placesG4411 of honorG4411 at banquetsG1173, 47whoG3739 devourG2719 widows’G5503 housesG3614, and for appearance’sG4392 sakeG4392 offerG4336 longG3117 prayersG4336. TheseG3778 will receiveG2983 greaterG4053 condemnationG2917.”
