Jesus Teaches in Parables

1On that dayG2250 JesusG2424 had goneG1831 outG1831 of 1the houseG3614 and was sittingG2521 2by the seaG2281. 2And largeG4183 crowdsG3793 gatheredG4863 to Him, soG5620 3He gotG1684 into a boatG4143 and satG2521 downG2521, and the wholeG3956 crowdG3793 was standingG2476 on the beachG123.

3And He toldG2980 them manyG4183 thingsG4183 in 4parablesG3850, sayingG3004, “BeholdG2400, the sowerG4687 wentG1831 outG1831 to sowG4687; 4and as he sowedG4687, someG3739G3303 seeds fellG4098 besideG3844 the roadG3598, and the birdsG4071 cameG2064 and ateG2719 them upG2719. 5OthersG243 fellG4098 on the rockyG4075 places, whereG3699 they did not haveG2192 muchG4183 soilG1093; and they sprangG1816 upG1816 immediatelyG2112, becauseG1223 they hadG2192 noG3361 depthG899 of soilG1093. 6But after the sunG2246 roseG393, they were scorchedG2739; and becauseG1223 they hadG2192 noG3361 rootG4491, they witheredG3583 awayG3583. 7OthersG243 fellG4098 5amongG1909 the thornsG173, and the thornsG173 cameG305 upG305 and chokedG638 them out. 8But othersG243 fellG4098 on the goodG2570 soilG1093 and yieldedG1325 a cropG2590, someG3739G3303 a 6hundredG1540, someG3739 sixtyG1835, and someG3739 thirtyG5144 times as much. 97The one who hasG2192 earsG3775, 8let him hearG191.”

An Explanation for Parables

10And the disciplesG3101 cameG4334 upG4334 and saidG3004 to Him, “WhyG1223G5101 do You speakG2980 to them in parablesG3850?” 11And 9Jesus answeredG611 them, “10To you it has been grantedG1325 to knowG1097 the mysteriesG3466 of the kingdomG932 of heavenG3772, but to them it has not been grantedG1325. 1211For whoeverG3748 hasG2192, to him more shall be givenG1325, and he will haveG4052 anG4052 abundanceG4052; but whoeverG3748 does not haveG2192, evenG2532 whatG3739 he hasG2192 shall be takenG142 awayG142 from him. 13ThereforeG1223G3778 I speakG2980 to them in parablesG3850; becauseG3754 while 12seeingG991 they do not seeG991, and while hearingG191 they do not hearG191, norG3761 do they understandG4920. 14And 13in their case the prophecyG4394 of IsaiahG2268 is being fulfilledG378, which saysG3004, ‘1415You shall keepG189 on listeningG191, 16but shall not understandG4920; And 17you shall keepG991 on lookingG991, 18but shall not perceiveG3708;1519For the heartG2588 of thisG3778 peopleG2992 has becomeG3975 dullG3975, With their earsG3775 they scarcelyG917 hearG191, And they have closedG2576 their eyesG3788, OtherwiseG3379 they might seeG3708 with their eyesG3788, HearG191 with their earsG3775, UnderstandG4920 with their heartG2588, and returnG1994, And I would healG2390 them.’ 1620But blessedG3107 are your eyesG3788, becauseG3754 they seeG991; and your earsG3775, becauseG3754 they hearG191. 17For trulyG281 I sayG3004 to you that 21manyG4183 prophetsG4396 and righteousG1342 peopleG1342 longedG1937 to seeG3708 whatG3739 you seeG991, and did not seeG3708 it, and to hearG191 whatG3739 you hearG191, and did not hearG191 it.

The Sower Explained

18“22ListenG191 thenG3767 to the parableG3850 of the sowerG4687. 19When anyoneG3956 hearsG191 23the 24wordG3056 of the kingdomG932 and does not understandG4920 it, 25the evilG4190 one comesG2064 and snatchesG726 awayG726 whatG3588 has been sownG4687 in his heartG2588. ThisG3778 is the one sownG4687 with seed besideG3844 the roadG3598. 20The one sownG4687 with seed on the rockyG4075 places, thisG3778 is the one who hearsG191 the wordG3056 and immediatelyG2117 receivesG2983 it with joyG5479; 21yetG1161 he hasG2192 noG3756 firm rootG4491 in himselfG1438, but is only temporaryG4340, and when afflictionG2347 orG2228 persecutionG1375 occursG1096 becauseG1223 of the 26wordG3056, immediatelyG2117 he 2728fallsG4624 awayG4624. 22And the one sownG4687 with seed amongG1519 the thornsG173, thisG3778 is the one who hearsG191 the wordG3056, and the anxietyG3308 of 29the 30worldG165 and the 31deceitfulnessG539 of wealthG4149 chokeG4846 the wordG3056, and it 32becomesG1096 unfruitfulG175. 23But the one sownG4687 with seed on the goodG2570 soilG1093, thisG3778 is the one who hearsG191 the wordG3056 and understandsG4920 it, whoG3739 indeedG1211 bearsG2592 fruitG2592 and producesG4160, someG3739G3303 33a hundredG1540, someG3739 sixtyG1835, and someG3739 thirtyG5144 times as much.”

Weeds among Wheat

24Jesus presentedG3908 anotherG243 parableG3850 to them, sayingG3004, “34The kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 35isG3666 likeG3666 a manG444 who sowedG4687 goodG2570 seedG4690 in his fieldG68. 25But whileG1722 his menG444 were sleepingG2518, his enemyG2190 cameG2064 and sowedG1986 36weedsG2215 amongG303G3319 the wheatG4621, and leftG565. 26And whenG3753 the 37wheatG5528 sproutedG985 and producedG4160 grainG2590, thenG5119 the weedsG2215 alsoG2532 becameG5316 evidentG5316. 27And the slavesG1401 of the landownerG3617 cameG4334 and saidG3004 to him, ‘SirG2962, did you not sowG4687 goodG2570 seedG4690 in your fieldG68? 38HowG4159 thenG3767 does it haveG2192 weedsG2215?’ 28And he saidG5346 to them, ‘39An enemyG2190G444 has doneG4160 thisG3778!’ The slavesG1401 saidG3004 to him, ‘Do you wantG2309 us, thenG3767, to goG565 and gatherG4816 them upG4816?’ 29But he saidG5346, ‘NoG3756; while you are gatheringG4816 upG4816 the weedsG2215, you may uprootG1610 the wheatG4621 with them. 30AllowG863 bothG297 to growG4885 togetherG4885 untilG2193 the harvestG2326; and at the timeG2540 of the harvestG2326 I will sayG3004 to the reapersG2327, “FirstG4413 gatherG4816 upG4816 the weedsG2215 and bindG1210 them in bundlesG1197 to burnG2618 them; but 40gatherG4863 the wheatG4621 into my barnG596.”’”

The Mustard Seed

31He presentedG3908 anotherG243 parableG3850 to them, sayingG3004, “41The kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 is likeG3664 42a mustardG4615 seedG2848, whichG3739 a personG444 tookG2983 and sowedG4687 in his fieldG68; 32and thisG3739 is smallerG3398 than allG3956 the other seedsG4690, but whenG3752 it is fully grownG837, it is largerG3173 than the gardenG3001 plantsG3001 and becomesG1096 a treeG1186, soG5620 thatG5620 43the birdsG4071 of the skyG3772 comeG2064 and nestG2681 in its branchesG2798.”

The Leaven

33He spokeG2980 anotherG243 parableG3850 to them: “44The kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 is likeG3664 45leavenG2219, whichG3739 a womanG1135 tookG2983 and hidG1470 in 46threeG5140 47sataG4568 of flourG224 untilG2193 it was allG3650 leavenedG2220.”

34AllG3956 theseG3778 thingsG3778 JesusG2424 spokeG2980 to the crowdsG3793 in parablesG3850, and He did not speakG2980 anythingG3762 to them 48withoutG5565 a parableG3850. 35This was soG3704 thatG3704 whatG3588 was spokenG3004 throughG1223 the prophetG4396 would be 49fulfilledG4137: “50I will openG455 My mouthG4750 in parablesG3850; I will proclaimG2044 thingsG2928 hiddenG2928 sinceG575 the foundationG2602 of the worldG2889.”

The Weeds Explained

36ThenG5119 He leftG863 the crowdsG3793 and wentG2064 into 51the houseG3614. And His disciplesG3101 cameG4334 to Him and saidG3004, “52ExplainG1285 to us the parableG3850 of the 53weedsG2215 of the fieldG68.” 37And He saidG3004, “The one who sowsG4687 the goodG2570 seedG4690 is 54the SonG5207 of ManG444, 38and the fieldG68 is the worldG2889; and as for the goodG2570 seedG4690, theseG3778 are 55the sonsG5207 of the kingdomG932; and the weedsG2215 are 56the sonsG5207 of 57the evilG4190 one; 39and the enemyG2190 who sowedG4687 them is the devilG1228, and the harvestG2326 is 58the 59endG4930 of the ageG165; and the reapersG2327 are angelsG32. 40SoG3779 justG5618 as the weedsG2215 are gatheredG4816 upG4816 and burnedG2618 with fireG4442, soG3779 shall it be at 60the 61endG4930 of the ageG165. 4162The SonG5207 of ManG444 63will sendG649 forthG649 His angelsG32, and they will gatherG4816 out of His kingdomG932 64allG3956 65stumblingG4625 blocksG4625, and thoseG3588 who commitG4160 lawlessnessG458, 42and they 66will throwG906 them into the furnaceG2575 of fireG4442; in that placeG1563 67there will be weepingG2805 and gnashingG1030 of teethG3599. 4368ThenG5119 the righteousG1342 will shineG1584 forthG1584 likeG5613 the sunG2246 in the kingdomG932 of their FatherG3962. 69The one who hasG2192 earsG3775, 70let him hearG191.

Hidden Treasure

44“71The kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 is likeG3664 a treasureG2344 hiddenG2928 in the fieldG68, whichG3739 a manG444 foundG2147 and hidG2928 again; and from 72joyG5479 over it he goesG5217 and 73sellsG4453 everythingG3745 that he hasG2192, and buysG59 that fieldG68.

A Costly Pearl

45“AgainG3825, 74the kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 is likeG3664 a merchantG1713 seekingG2212 fineG2570 pearlsG3135, 46and upon findingG2147 oneG1520 pearlG3135 of greatG4186 valueG4186, he wentG565 and soldG4097 everythingG3956 that he hadG2192 and boughtG59 it.

A Dragnet

47“AgainG3825, 75the kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 is likeG3664 a dragnetG4522 that was castG906 into the seaG2281 and gatheredG4863 fish of everyG3956 kindG1085; 48and whenG3753 it was filledG4137, they pulledG307 it upG307 on the beachG123; and they satG2523 downG2523 and gatheredG4816 the goodG2570 fish into containersG32, but the badG4550 they threwG906 awayG1854. 49SoG3779 it will be at 76the 77endG4930 of the ageG165: the angelsG32 will comeG1831 forthG1831 and removeG873 the wickedG4190 from amongG3319 the righteousG1342, 50and they 78will throwG906 them into the furnaceG2575 of fireG4442; inG1563 thatG1563 placeG1563 79there will be weepingG2805 and gnashingG1030 of teethG3599.

51“Have you understoodG4920 allG3956 theseG3778 thingsG3778?” They saidG3004 to Him, “YesG3483.” 52And 80Jesus saidG3004 to them, “ThereforeG1223G3778 everyG3956 scribeG1122 who has becomeG3100 aG3100 discipleG3100 of the kingdomG932 of heavenG3772 is likeG3664 a headG3617 ofG3617 aG3617 householdG3617, whoG3748 bringsG1544 outG1544 of his treasureG2344 newG2537 thingsG2537 and oldG3820.”

Jesus Revisits Nazareth

5381WhenG3753 JesusG2424 had finishedG5055 theseG3778 parablesG3850, He departedG3332 fromG1564 thereG1564. 54And 82He cameG2064 to 83His hometownG3968 and 84began teachingG1321 them in their synagogueG4864, withG5620 theG5620 resultG5620 thatG5620 85they were astonishedG1605, and saidG3004, “WhereG4159 did thisG3778 manG3778 acquire thisG3778 wisdomG4678 and these 86miraculousG1411 powersG1411? 55Is thisG3778 not the carpenter’sG5045 sonG5207? Is 87His motherG3384 not calledG3004 MaryG3137, and His 88brothersG80, JamesG2385, JosephG2501, SimonG4613, and JudasG2455? 56And 89His sistersG79, are they not allG3956 with us? WhereG4159 thenG3767 did thisG3778 ManG3778 acquire allG3956 theseG3778 thingsG3778?” 57And they tookG4624 90offenseG4624 at Him. But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “91A prophetG4396 is not dishonoredG820 exceptG1487G1508 in his 92hometownG3968 and in his own householdG3614.” 58And He did not doG4160 manyG4183 93miraclesG1411 thereG1563 becauseG1223 of their unbeliefG570.
