John the Baptist Beheaded

112At that timeG2540 34HerodG2264 5the tetrarchG5068 heardG191 the newsG189 about JesusG2424, 2and saidG3004 to his servantsG3816, “6ThisG3778 is JohnG2491 the BaptistG910; he himself has been raisedG1453 from the deadG3498, and that is whyG1223 miraculousG1411 powersG1411 are at workG1754 in him.”

3For when 7HerodG2264 had JohnG2491 arrestedG2902, he boundG1210 him and putG659 him 8in prisonG5438 becauseG1223 of 9HerodiasG2266, the wifeG1135 of his brotherG80 PhilipG5376. 4For JohnG2491 had been sayingG3004 to him, “10It is not lawfulG1832 for you to haveG2192 her.” 5Although Herod wantedG2309 to putG615 him toG615 deathG615, he fearedG5399 the crowdG3793, becauseG3754 they regardedG2192 11JohnG846 as 12a prophetG4396.

6But when Herod’sG2264 birthdayG1077 cameG1096, the daughterG2364 of 13HerodiasG2266 dancedG3738 14beforeG1722G3319 them and pleasedG700 15HerodG2264, 7soG3606 much thatG3606 he promisedG3670 with an oathG3727 to giveG1325 her whateverG3739G1437 she askedG154. 8And after being promptedG4264 by her motherG3384, she saidG5346, “GiveG1325 me the headG2776 of JohnG2491 the BaptistG910 hereG5602 on a platterG4094.” 9And although he was grievedG3076, the kingG935 commandedG2753 it to be givenG1325 becauseG1223 of his oathsG3727 and 16his dinnerG4873 guestsG4873. 10He sentG3992 word and had JohnG2491 beheadedG607 in the prisonG5438. 11And his headG2776 was broughtG5342 on a platterG4094 and givenG1325 to the girlG2877, and she broughtG5342 it to her motherG3384. 1217John’s disciplesG3101 cameG4334 and tookG142 awayG142 the bodyG4430 and buriedG2290 18it; and they wentG2064 and reportedG518 to JesusG2424.

Five Thousand Men Fed

1319NowG1161 when JesusG2424 heardG191 about John, He withdrewG402 fromG1564 thereG1564 in a boatG4143 to a secludedG2048 placeG5117 by HimselfG2398; and when the 20peopleG3793 heardG191 about this, they followedG190 Him on footG3979 from the citiesG4172. 14When He cameG1831 21ashoreG1831, He 22sawG3708 a largeG4183 crowdG3793, and feltG4697 compassionG4697 for them and 23healedG2323 their sickG732.

15Now when it was eveningG3798, the disciplesG3101 cameG4334 to Him and saidG3004, “ThisG3588 placeG5117 is secludedG2048 and the hourG5610 is alreadyG2235 pastG3928 to eat; sendG630 the crowdsG3793 awayG630, soG2443 thatG2443 they may goG565 into the villagesG2968 and buyG59 foodG1033 for themselvesG1438.” 16But JesusG2424 saidG3004 to them, “They do not needG5532 to goG565; you giveG1325 them something to eatG2068!” 17They saidG3004 to Him, “We haveG2192 nothingG3756 hereG5602 exceptG1487G3361 24fiveG4002 loavesG740 and twoG1417 fishG2486.” 18And He saidG3004, “BringG5342 them hereG5602 to Me.” 19And orderingG2753 the crowdsG3793 to 25sitG347 downG347 on the grassG5528, He tookG2983 the fiveG4002 loavesG740 and the twoG1417 fishG2486, and lookedG308 upG308 towardG1519 heavenG3772. He 26blessedG2127 the food and breakingG2806 the loavesG740, He gaveG1325 them to the disciplesG3101, and the disciplesG3101 gave them to the crowdsG3793. 20And they allG3956 ateG2068 and were satisfiedG5526, and they pickedG142 upG142 whatG3588 was leftG4052 overG4052 of the brokenG2801 piecesG2801: twelveG1427 fullG4134 27basketsG2894. 21There were aboutG5616 fiveG4000 thousandG4000 menG435 who ateG2068, besidesG5565 womenG1135 and childrenG3813.

Jesus Walks on the Water

2228ImmediatelyG2112 afterward He compelledG315 the disciplesG3101 to getG1684 into the boatG4143 and to goG4254 aheadG4254 of Him to the otherG4008 sideG4008, whileG2193 He sentG630 the crowdsG3793 awayG630. 23After He had sentG630 the crowdsG3793 awayG630, 29He wentG305 upG305 on the mountainG3735 by HimselfG2398 to prayG4336; and when it was eveningG3798, He was thereG1563 aloneG3441. 24But the boatG4143 was alreadyG2235 30a longG4183 distanceG4712 from the landG1093, 31batteredG928 by the wavesG2949; for the windG417 was 3233contraryG1727. 25And in 34the 35fourthG5067 watchG5438 of the nightG3571 He cameG2064 to them, walkingG4043 on the seaG2281. 26When the disciplesG3101 sawG3708 Him walkingG4043 on the seaG2281, they were terrifiedG5015, and saidG3004, “It is 36a ghostG5326!” And they criedG2896 outG2896 37in fearG5401. 27But immediatelyG2117 JesusG2424 spokeG2980 to them, sayingG3004, “38TakeG2293 courageG2293, 39it is I; 40do not beG5399 afraidG5399.”

28PeterG4074 respondedG611 and saidG3004 to Him, “LordG2962, ifG1487 41it is You, commandG2753 me to comeG2064 to You on the waterG5204.” 29And He saidG3004, “ComeG2064!” And PeterG4074 gotG2597 outG2597 of the boatG4143 and walkedG4043 on the waterG5204, and cameG2064 towardG4314 JesusG2424. 30But seeingG991 the windG417, he becameG5399 frightenedG5399, and when he beganG757 to sinkG2670, he criedG2896 outG2896, sayingG3004, “LordG2962, saveG4982 me!” 31ImmediatelyG2112 JesusG2424 reachedG1614 outG1614 with His handG5495 and tookG1949 holdG1949 of him, and saidG3004 to him, “42You ofG3640 littleG3640 faithG3640, whyG1519G5101 did you doubtG1365?” 32When they gotG305 into the boatG4143, the windG417 stoppedG2869. 33And thoseG3588 who were in the boatG4143 worshipedG4352 Him, sayingG3004, “You are trulyG230 43God’sG2316 SonG5207!”

3444When they had crossedG1276 overG1276, they cameG2064 to landG1093 at 45GennesaretG1082. 35And when the menG435 of that placeG5117 46recognizedG1921 Him, they sentG649 word into allG3650 that surroundingG4066 regionG4066 and broughtG4374 to Him allG3956 who were sickG2560; 36and they pleadedG3870 with Him that they might justG3441 touchG681 47the 48borderG2899 of His cloakG2440; and allG3745 whoG3745 49touchedG681 it were curedG1295.
