Context of Acts 10:45

43Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.” 44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, 47“Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”

Commentaries on Acts 10:45

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 45They of the circumcision - were astonished - Because it was a maxim with them that the Shechinah or Divine influence could not be revealed to any person who dwelt beyond the precincts of the promised land. Nor did any of them believe that the Divine Spirit could be communicated to any Gentile. It is no wonder, therefore, that they were amazed when they saw the Spirit of God so liberally given as it was on this occasion.Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 44-48Verses 44-48 The Holy Ghost fell upon others after they were baptized, to confirm them in the faith; but upon these Gentiles before they were baptized, to show that God does not confine himself to outward signs. The Holy Ghost fell upon those who were neither circumcised nor baptized; it is the Spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing. They magnified God, and spake of Christ and the benefits of redemption. Whatever gift we are endued with, we…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 44-48On the day of Pentecost, Peter told the people that if they stopped sinning, repented, asked forgiveness from God, and received baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, they would "receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (2:38; see also 19:1–7). As Cornelius and his household listened to Peter's message, they received the Holy Spirit just like the Jews had earlier. This event confirmed again that God did not favor one group over another (10:34–35). This event is…Read the comment
