Ruth Chapter 1
American Standard Version
1And it came to pass in the daysH3117 when the judgesH8199 judgedH8199, that there wasH1961 a famineH7458 in the landH776. And a certain manH376 of Beth-lehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of MoabH4124, he, and his wifeH802, and his twoH8147 sonsH1121. 2And the nameH8034 of the manH376 was ElimelechH458, and the nameH8034 of his wifeH802 NaomiH5281, and the nameH8034 of his twoH8147 sonsH1121 MahlonH4248 and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem-judah. And they cameH935 into the countryH7704 of MoabH4124, and continued there. 3And ElimelechH458, Naomi’s husbandH376, diedH4191; and she was leftH7604, and her twoH8147 sonsH1121. 4And they tookH5375 them wivesH802 of the womenH802 of Moab; the nameH8034 of the oneH259 was OrpahH6204, and the nameH8034 of the other RuthH7327: and they dweltH3427 there about tenH6235 yearsH8141. 5And MahlonH4248 and Chilion diedH4191 both of them; and the womanH802 was leftH7604 of her twoH8147 childrenH3206 and of her husbandH376.
6Then she aroseH6965 with her daughters-in-law, that she might returnH7725 from the countryH7704 of MoabH4124: for she had heardH8085 in the countryH7704 of MoabH4124 how that Jehovah had visitedH6485 his peopleH5971 in givingH5414 them breadH3899. 7And she wentH3318 forthH3318 out of the placeH4725 whereH834 she wasH1961, and her twoH8147 daughters-in-law with her; and they wentH3318 on the wayH1870 to returnH7725 unto the landH776 of JudahH3063. 8And NaomiH5281 saidH559 unto her twoH8147 daughters-in-law, GoH7725, returnH7725 each of you to her mother’sH517 houseH1004: Jehovah deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the deadH4191, and with me. 9Jehovah grant you that ye may findH4672 restH4496, each of you in the houseH1004 of her husbandH376. Then she kissedH5401 them, and they liftedH5375 up their voiceH6963, and weptH1058. 10And they saidH559 unto her, Nay, but we will returnH7725 with thee unto thy peopleH5971. 11And NaomiH5281 saidH559, TurnH7725 againH5750, my daughtersH1323: whyH4100 will ye goH7725 with me? have I yetH5750 sonsH1121 in my womb, that they may beH1961 your husbandsH376? 12TurnH7725 again, my daughtersH1323, goH7725 your way; for I amH1961 too old to have a husbandH376. If I should sayH559, I have hopeH8615, if I should even have a husbandH376 to-night, and should alsoH1571 bearH3205 sonsH1121; 13would ye therefore tarry till they were grownH1431? would ye therefore stay from having husbandsH376? nay, my daughtersH1323, for it grieveth me much for your sakes, for the handH3027 of Jehovah is goneH3318 forthH3318 against me. 14And they liftedH5375 up their voiceH6963, and weptH1058 againH5750: and OrpahH6204 kissedH5401 her mother-in-law, but RuthH7327 clave unto her.
15And she saidH559, Behold, thy sister-in-law is goneH7725 backH7725 unto her peopleH5971, and unto her godH430: returnH7725 thou after thy sister-in-law. 16And RuthH7327 saidH559, EntreatH6293 me not to leaveH5800 thee, and to returnH7725 from following after thee, for whither thou goest, I will goH7725; and whereH834 thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy peopleH5971 shall be my peopleH5971, and thy GodH430 my GodH430; 17whereH834 thou diest, will I dieH4191, and there will I be buriedH6912: Jehovah do so to me, and more also, if aught but deathH4191 part thee and me. 18And when she sawH7200 that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left off speakingH1696 unto her.
19So they twoH8147 wentH935 until they cameH935 to Beth-lehem. And it cameH935 to pass, when they wereH1961 comeH935 to Beth-lehem, that all the cityH5892 wasH1961 moved about them, and the women saidH559, Is this NaomiH5281? 20And she saidH559 unto them, CallH7121 me not NaomiH5281, callH7121 me Mara; for the AlmightyH7706 hath dealt veryH3966 bitterly with me. 21I wentH1980 out fullH4392, and Jehovah hath broughtH7725 me home again emptyH7387; whyH4100 callH7121 ye me NaomiH5281, seeing Jehovah hath testified against me, and the AlmightyH7706 hath afflicted me? 22So NaomiH5281 returnedH7725, and RuthH7327 the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returnedH7725 out of the countryH7704 of MoabH4124: and they cameH935 to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barleyH8184 harvestH7105.
