Nahum Chapter 1

American Standard Version

1The burdenH4853 of NinevehH5210. The bookH5612 of the visionH2377 of Nahum the Elkoshite.

2Jehovah is a jealousH7072 GodH410 and avengeth; Jehovah avengeth and is full of wrathH2534; Jehovah taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrathH2534 for his enemiesH341. 3Jehovah is slow to angerH639, and greatH1419 in powerH3581, and will by no means clear the guilty: Jehovah hath his wayH1870 in the whirlwind and in the stormH8183, and the cloudsH6051 are the dustH80 of his feetH7272. 4He rebuketh the seaH3220, and maketh it dryH3001, and drieth up all the riversH5104: BashanH1316 languisheth, and CarmelH3760; and the flower of LebanonH3844 languisheth. 5The mountainsH2022 quakeH7493 at him, and the hillsH1389 meltH4127; and the earthH776 is upheaved at his presenceH6440, yea, the worldH8398, and all that dwellH3427 therein. 6Who can standH5975 before his indignationH2195? and who can abide in the fierceness of his angerH639? his wrathH2534 is pouredH5413 out like fireH784, and the rocksH6697 are brokenH5422 asunder by him. 7Jehovah is goodH2896, a strongholdH4581 in the dayH3117 of troubleH6869; and he knoweth them that takeH2620 refugeH2620 in him. 8But with an over-running floodH7858 he will makeH6213 a full end of her placeH4725, and will pursueH7291 his enemiesH341 into darknessH2822.

9What do ye devise against Jehovah? he will makeH6213 a full end; affliction shall not riseH6965 up the second timeH6471. 10For entangled like thorns, and drunken as with their drinkH5435, they are consumedH398 utterly as dryH3002 stubbleH7179. 11There is oneH4480 goneH3318 forthH3318 out of thee, that deviseth evilH7451 against Jehovah, that counselleth wickednessH7451. 12ThusH3541 saith Jehovah: Though they be in fullH8003 strength, and likewise manyH7227, even soH3651 shall they be cutH1494 down, and he shall passH5674 away. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflictH6031 thee no more. 13And nowH6258 will I breakH7665 his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.

14And Jehovah hath given commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy nameH8034 be sownH2232: out of the houseH1004 of thy godsH430 will I cutH3772 off the graven imageH6459 and the molten imageH6459; I will makeH7760 thy graveH6913; for thou art vile.

15Behold, upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! Keep thy feasts, O Judah, perform thy vows; for the wicked one shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
