1 Samuel 1

1Now there was a certain manH376 of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill-country of EphraimH669, and his nameH8034 was ElkanahH511, the sonH1121 of JerohamH3395, the sonH1121 of ElihuH453, the sonH1121 of Tohu, the sonH1121 of ZuphH6689, an Ephraimite: 2and he had twoH8147 wivesH802; the nameH8034 of the oneH259 was HannahH2584, and the nameH8034 of the other PeninnahH6444: and PeninnahH6444 had childrenH3206, but HannahH2584 had no childrenH3206. 3And this manH376 wentH5927 up out of his cityH5892 from year to year to worship and to sacrificeH2076 unto Jehovah of hostsH6635 in ShilohH7887. And the twoH8147 sonsH1121 of EliH5941, HophniH2652 and PhinehasH6372, priestsH3548 unto Jehovah, were there. 4And when the dayH3117 came that ElkanahH511 sacrificedH2076, he gaveH5414 to PeninnahH6444 his wifeH802, and to all her sonsH1121 and her daughtersH1323, portionsH4490: 5but unto HannahH2584 he gaveH5414 a double portionH4490; for he lovedH157 HannahH2584, but Jehovah had shutH5462 up her wombH7358. 6And her rival provokedH3707 her sore, to make her fret, because Jehovah had shutH5462 up her wombH7358. 7And as he did soH3651 yearH8141 by yearH8141, when she wentH5927 up to the houseH1004 of Jehovah, so she provokedH3707 her; thereforeH3651 she weptH1058, and did not eatH398. 8And ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 saidH559 unto her, HannahH2584, whyH4100 weepest thou? and whyH4100 eatest thou not? and whyH4100 is thy heartH3824 grieved? am not I betterH2896 to thee than tenH6235 sonsH1121?

9So HannahH2584 roseH6965 up after they had eatenH398 in ShilohH7887, and after they had drunkH8354. Now EliH5941 the priestH3548 was sittingH3427 upon his seatH3678 by the door-post of the templeH1964 of Jehovah. 10And she was in bitternessH4751 of soulH5315, and prayedH6419 unto Jehovah, and weptH1058 sore. 11And she vowedH5087 a vowH5088, and saidH559, O Jehovah of hostsH6635, if thou wilt indeed lookH7200 on the affliction of thy handmaid, and rememberH2142 me, and not forgetH7911 thy handmaid, but wilt giveH5414 unto thy handmaid a man-child, then I will giveH5414 him unto Jehovah all the daysH3117 of his life, and there shall no razor comeH5927 upon his headH7218.

12And it came to pass, as she continued prayingH6419 before Jehovah, that EliH5941 marked her mouthH6310. 13Now HannahH2584, she spake in her heartH3820; onlyH7535 her lipsH8193 moved, but her voiceH6963 was not heardH8085: therefore EliH5941 thought she had been drunkenH7910. 14And EliH5941 saidH559 unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put awayH5493 thy wineH3196 from thee. 15And HannahH2584 answered and saidH559, No, my lord, I am a womanH802 of a sorrowful spiritH7307: I have drunkH8354 neither wineH3196 nor strongH7941 drinkH8354, but I pouredH8210 out my soulH5315 before Jehovah. 16Count not thy handmaid for a wicked woman; for out of the abundanceH7230 of my complaintH7879 and my provocation have I spokenH1696 hitherto. 17Then EliH5941 answered and saidH559, Go in peaceH7965; and the GodH430 of IsraelH3478 grant thy petitionH7596 that thou hast askedH7592 of him. 18And she saidH559, Let thy handmaid findH4672 favorH2580 in thy sight. So the womanH802 went her wayH1870, and did eatH398; and her countenance wasH1961 no more sad.

19And they roseH7925 up in the morningH1242 earlyH7925, and worshipped before Jehovah, and returnedH7725, and cameH935 to their houseH1004 to RamahH7414. And ElkanahH511 knewH3045 HannahH2584 his wifeH802; and Jehovah rememberedH2142 her; 20and it came to pass, when the time was come about, that HannahH2584 conceivedH2029, and bare a sonH1121; and she calledH7121 his nameH8034 SamuelH8050, saying, Because I have askedH7592 him of Jehovah.

21And the manH376 ElkanahH511, and all his houseH1004, wentH5927 up to offerH5927 unto Jehovah the yearly sacrificeH2077, and his vowH5088. 22But HannahH2584 wentH935 not up; for she saidH559 unto her husbandH376, I will not goH935 up until the child be weanedH1580; and then I will bringH935 him, that he may appearH7200 before Jehovah, and there abide for everH5769. 23And ElkanahH511 her husbandH376 saidH559 unto her, Do what seemeth thee goodH2896; tarry until thou have weanedH1580 him; onlyH389 Jehovah establishH6965 his wordH1697. So the womanH802 tarried and gave her sonH1121 suckH3243, until she weanedH1580 him. 24And whenH834 she had weanedH1580 him, she took him up with her, with threeH7969 bullocks, and oneH259 ephahH374 of meal, and a bottle of wineH3196, and broughtH935 him unto the houseH1004 of Jehovah in ShilohH7887: and the child was youngH5288. 25And they slew the bullock, and broughtH935 the child to EliH5941. 26And she saidH559, Oh, my lord, as thy soulH5315 liveth, my lord, I am the womanH802 that stoodH5324 by thee hereH2088, prayingH6419 unto Jehovah. 27For this child I prayedH6419; and Jehovah hath givenH5414 me my petitionH7596 which I askedH7592 of him: 28therefore alsoH1571 I have granted him to Jehovah; as long as he liveth he is granted to Jehovah. And he worshipped Jehovah there.
