Matthew 14
American Standard Version
1At that seasonG2540 HerodG2264 the tetrarch heardG191 the reportG189 concerning JesusG2424, 2and saidG3004 unto his servantsG3816, This isG1510 JohnG2491 the BaptistG910; he isG1510 risenG1453 from the deadG3498; and therefore do these powersG1411 workG1754 in him. 3For HerodG2264 had laid holdG2902 on JohnG2491, and boundG1210 him, and putG659 him in prisonG5438 for the sakeG1223 of HerodiasG2266, his brotherG80 Philip’s wifeG1135. 4For JohnG2491 saidG3004 unto him, It is not lawfulG1832 for thee to have her. 5And whenG5613 he would have putG615 him to deathG615, he fearedG5399 the multitudeG3793, because they counted him as a prophetG4396. 6But when Herod’s birthdayG1077 cameG1096, the daughterG2364 of HerodiasG2266 dancedG3738 in the midstG3319, and pleasedG700 HerodG2264. 7Whereupon he promised with an oathG3727 to giveG1325 her whatsoever she should askG154. 8And she, being put forward by her motherG3384, saith, GiveG1325 me hereG5602 on a platterG4094 the headG2776 of JohnG2491 the BaptistG910. 9And the kingG935 was grievedG3076; but for the sakeG1223 of his oathsG3727, and of them that sat at meat with him, he commandedG2753 it to be givenG1325; 10and he sentG3992 and beheadedG607 JohnG2491 in the prisonG5438. 11And his headG2776 was broughtG5342 on a platterG4094, and givenG1325 to the damsel: and she broughtG5342 it to her motherG3384. 12And his disciplesG3101 cameG2064, and tookG142 up the corpse, and buriedG2290 him; and they went and toldG518 JesusG2424.
13NowG1161 when JesusG2424 heardG191it, he withdrew from thence in a boatG4143, to a desert placeG5117 apart: and when the multitudesG3793 heardG191 thereof, they followedG190 him on foot from the citiesG4172. 14And he cameG1831 forthG1831, and sawG3708 a greatG4183 multitudeG3793, and he had compassionG4697 on them, and healedG2323 their sickG732. 15And when evenG2532 wasG1510 comeG1096, the disciplesG3101 cameG4334 to him, sayingG3004, The placeG5117 isG1510 desert, and the timeG5610 isG1510 alreadyG2235 past; sendG630 the multitudesG3793 awayG565, that they may goG565 into the villagesG2968, and buyG59 themselves foodG1033. 16But JesusG2424 saidG3004 unto them, They have no needG5532 to goG565 awayG565; giveG1325 ye them to eatG2068. 17And they sayG3004 unto him, We have hereG5602 but fiveG4002 loavesG740, and twoG1417 fishes. 18And he saidG3004, BringG5342 them hither to me. 19And he commandedG2753 the multitudesG3793 to sit down on the grassG5528; and he tookG2983 the fiveG4002 loavesG740, and the twoG1417 fishes, and lookingG308 up to heavenG3772, he blessedG2127, and brake and gaveG1325 the loavesG740 to the disciplesG3101, and the disciplesG3101 to the multitudesG3793. 20And they all ateG2068, and were filledG5526: and they tookG142 up that which remained over of the broken pieces, twelveG1427 baskets fullG4134. 21And they that did eatG2068 wereG1510 about fiveG4000 thousandG4000 menG435, besides womenG1135 and childrenG3813.
22And straightway he constrained the disciplesG3101 to enter into the boatG4143, and to goG4254 before him unto the otherG4008 sideG4008, till he should sendG630 the multitudesG3793 awayG630. 23And after he had sentG630 the multitudesG3793 awayG630, he wentG305 up into the mountainG3735 apart to prayG4336: and when evenG2532 wasG1510 comeG1096, he wasG1510 there aloneG3441. 24But the boatG4143 wasG1510 nowG1161 in the midstG3319 of the seaG2281, distressed by the waves; for the windG417 wasG1510 contraryG1727. 25And in the fourth watchG5438 of the nightG3571 he cameG2064 unto them, walkingG4043 upon the seaG2281. 26And when the disciplesG3101 sawG3708 him walkingG4043 on the seaG2281, they wereG1510 troubledG5015, sayingG3004, It isG1510 a ghostG5326; and they criedG2896 out for fearG5401. 27But straightway JesusG2424 spake unto them, sayingG3004, BeG1510 of good cheer; it isG1510 I; beG1510 not afraidG5399. 28And PeterG4074 answeredG611 him and saidG3004, LordG2962, if it beG1510 thou, bid me comeG2064 unto thee upon the watersG5204. 29And he saidG3004, ComeG2064. And PeterG4074 went downG2597 from the boatG4143, and walkedG4043 upon the watersG5204 to comeG2064 to JesusG2424. 30But when he sawG991 the windG417, he was afraidG5399; and beginningG757 to sink, he criedG2896 out, sayingG3004, LordG2962, saveG4982 me. 31And immediatelyG2112 JesusG2424 stretchedG1614 forth his handG5495, and took holdG1949 of him, and saith unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32And when they were goneG305 up into the boatG4143, the windG417 ceased. 33And they that wereG1510 in the boatG4143 worshipped him, sayingG3004, Of a truth thou art the SonG5207 of GodG2316.
34And when they had crossed over, they cameG2064 to the landG1093, unto GennesaretG1082. 35And when the menG435 of that placeG5117 knewG1921 him, they sentG649 into all that regionG4066 round about, and broughtG4374 unto him all that were sickG2560; 36and they besought him that they might onlyG3440 touchG681 the border of his garmentG2440: and as manyG3745 as touchedG681 were made whole.
