1 Kings Chapter 1
American Standard Version
1Now kingH4428 DavidH1732 was oldH2204 and stricken in years; and they coveredH3680 him with clothesH899, but he gat no heat. 2Wherefore his servantsH5650 saidH559 unto him, Let there beH1961 soughtH1245 for my lordH113 the kingH4428 a youngH5291 virginH1330: and let her standH5975 before the kingH4428, and cherish him; and let her lieH7901 in thy bosomH2436, that my lordH113 the kingH4428 may get heat. 3So they soughtH1245 for a fair damsel throughout all the bordersH1366 of IsraelH3478, and foundH4672 AbishagH49 the ShunammiteH7767, and broughtH935 her to the kingH4428. 4And the damsel wasH1961 veryH3966 fair; and she cherished the kingH4428, and ministered to him; but the kingH4428 knewH3045 her not.
5Then AdonijahH138 the sonH1121 of HaggithH2294 exalted himself, sayingH559, I will be kingH4427: and he prepared him chariotsH7393 and horsemenH6571, and fiftyH2572 menH376 to runH7323 before him. 6And his fatherH1 had not displeased him at any time in sayingH559, WhyH4069 hast thou done so? and he was alsoH1571 a veryH3966 goodly man; and he was bornH3205 after AbsalomH53. 7And he conferred with JoabH3097 the sonH1121 of ZeruiahH6870, and with AbiatharH54 the priestH3548: and they following AdonijahH138 helpedH5826 him. 8But ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and ShimeiH8096, and Rei, and the mightyH1368 menH1368 that belongedH1961 to DavidH1732, were not with AdonijahH138. 9And AdonijahH138 slew sheepH6629 and oxenH1241 and fatlingsH4806 by the stoneH68 of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogelH5883; and he calledH7121 all his brethren, the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, and all the menH376 of JudahH3063, the king’sH4428 servantsH5650: 10but NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141, and the mightyH1368 menH1368, and SolomonH8010 his brotherH251, he calledH7121 not.
11Then NathanH5416 spake unto Bath-sheba the motherH517 of SolomonH8010, sayingH559, Hast thou not heardH8085 that AdonijahH138 the sonH1121 of HaggithH2294 doth reignH4427, and DavidH1732 our lordH113 knoweth it not? 12NowH6258 thereforeH6258 come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counselH6098, that thou mayest saveH4422 thine ownH5315 lifeH5315, and the lifeH5315 of thy sonH1121 SolomonH8010. 13GoH935 and get thee in unto kingH4428 DavidH1732, and sayH559 unto him, Didst not thou, my lordH113, O kingH4428, swearH7650 unto thy handmaid, sayingH559, Assuredly SolomonH8010 thy sonH1121 shall reignH4427 after me, and he shall sitH3427 upon my throneH3678? whyH4069 then doth AdonijahH138 reignH4427? 14Behold, while thou yetH5750 talkest there with the kingH4428, I also will comeH935 in after thee, and confirm thy wordsH1697.
15And Bath-sheba wentH935 in unto the kingH4428 into the chamberH2315: and the kingH4428 was veryH3966 oldH2204; and AbishagH49 the ShunammiteH7767 was ministering unto the kingH4428. 16And Bath-sheba bowedH7812, and did obeisance unto the kingH4428. And the kingH4428 saidH559, What wouldest thou? 17And she saidH559 unto him, My lord, thou swarest by Jehovah thy GodH430 unto thy handmaid, sayingH559, Assuredly SolomonH8010 thy sonH1121 shall reignH4427 after me, and he shall sitH3427 upon my throneH3678. 18And nowH6258, behold, AdonijahH138 reigneth; and thou, my lordH113 the kingH4428, knowest it not: 19and he hath slain oxen and fatlingsH4806 and sheepH6629 in abundanceH7230, and hath calledH7121 all the sonsH1121 of the kingH4428, and AbiatharH54 the priestH3548, and JoabH3097 the captain of the hostH6635; but SolomonH8010 thy servantH5650 hath he not calledH7121. 20And thou, my lordH113 the kingH4428, the eyesH5869 of all IsraelH3478 are upon thee, that thou shouldest tellH5046 them who shall sitH3427 on the throneH3678 of my lordH113 the kingH4428 after him. 21Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lordH113 the kingH4428 shall sleep with his fathersH1, that I and my sonH1121 SolomonH8010 shall beH1961 counted offenders.
22And, lo, while she yetH5750 talked with the kingH4428, NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 cameH935 in. 23And they toldH5046 the kingH4428, sayingH559, Behold, NathanH5416 the prophetH5030. And when he was comeH935 in before the kingH4428, he bowedH7812 himself before the kingH4428 with his faceH6440 to the groundH776. 24And NathanH5416 saidH559, My lordH113, O kingH4428, hast thou saidH559, AdonijahH138 shall reignH4427 after me, and he shall sitH3427 upon my throneH3678? 25For he is goneH3381 down this dayH3117, and hath slain oxen and fatlingsH4806 and sheepH6629 in abundanceH7230, and hath calledH7121 all the king’sH4428 sonsH1121, and the captains of the hostH6635, and AbiatharH54 the priestH3548; and, behold, they are eatingH398 and drinkingH8354 before him, and sayH559, Long liveH2421 kingH4428 AdonijahH138. 26But me, even me thy servantH5650, and ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and thy servantH5650 SolomonH8010, hath he not calledH7121. 27Is this thingH1697 done by my lordH113 the kingH4428, and thou hast not showed unto thy servantsH5650 who should sitH3427 on the throneH3678 of my lordH113 the kingH4428 after him?
28Then kingH4428 DavidH1732 answered and saidH559, CallH7121 to me Bath-sheba. And she cameH935 into the king’sH4428 presenceH6440, and stoodH5975 before the kingH4428. 29And the kingH4428 sware, and saidH559, As Jehovah liveth, who hath redeemedH6299 my soulH5315 out of all adversity, 30verily as I sware unto thee by Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, sayingH559, Assuredly SolomonH8010 thy sonH1121 shall reignH4427 after me, and he shall sitH3427 upon my throneH3678 in my stead; verily soH3651 will I do this dayH3117. 31Then Bath-sheba bowedH7812 with her faceH639 to the earthH776, and did obeisance to the kingH4428, and saidH559, Let my lordH113 kingH4428 DavidH1732 liveH2421 for everH5769.
32And kingH4428 DavidH1732 saidH559, CallH7121 to me ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077. And they cameH935 before the kingH4428. 33And the kingH4428 saidH559 unto them, TakeH3947 with you the servantsH5650 of your lordH113, and causeH7392 SolomonH8010 my sonH1121 to rideH7392 upon mine own muleH6506, and bringH3381 him downH3381 to GihonH1521: 34and let ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 anointH4886 him there kingH4428 over IsraelH3478; and blowH8628 ye the trumpetH7782, and sayH559, Long liveH2421 kingH4428 SolomonH8010. 35Then ye shall comeH935 up after him, and he shall comeH935 and sitH3427 upon my throneH3678; for he shall beH1961 kingH4427 in my stead; and I have appointedH6680 him to beH1961 princeH5057 over IsraelH3478 and over JudahH3063. 36And BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 answered the kingH4428, and saidH559, AmenH543: Jehovah, the GodH430 of my lord the kingH4428, sayH559 soH3651 too. 37As Jehovah hath beenH1961 with my lord the kingH4428, even soH3651 beH1961 he with SolomonH8010, and makeH1431 his throneH3678 greaterH1431 than the throneH3678 of my lord kingH4428 DavidH1732.
38So ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, wentH3381 downH3381, and caused SolomonH8010 to rideH7392 upon kingH4428 David’s muleH6506, and broughtH3381 him to GihonH1521. 39And ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 tookH3947 the hornH7161 of oilH8081 out of the TentH168, and anointedH4886 SolomonH8010. And they blewH8628 the trumpetH7782; and all the peopleH5971 saidH559, Long liveH2421 kingH4428 SolomonH8010. 40And all the peopleH5971 cameH5927 up after him, and the peopleH5971 piped with pipes, and rejoiced with greatH1419 joyH8057, so that the earthH776 rent with the soundH6963 of them.
41And AdonijahH138 and all the guests that were with him heardH8085 it as they had made an endH3615 of eatingH398. And whenH834 JoabH3097 heardH8085 the soundH6963 of the trumpetH7782, he saidH559, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproarH1993? 42While he yetH5750 spake, behold, JonathanH3129 the sonH1121 of AbiatharH54 the priestH3548 cameH935: and AdonijahH138 saidH559, ComeH935 in; for thou art a worthy manH376, and bringest goodH2896 tidings. 43And JonathanH3129 answered and saidH559 to AdonijahH138, Verily our lordH113 kingH4428 DavidH1732 hath made SolomonH8010 kingH4428: 44and the kingH4428 hath sentH7971 with him ZadokH6659 the priestH3548, and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030, and BenaiahH1141 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to rideH7392 upon the king’sH4428 muleH6506; 45and ZadokH6659 the priestH3548 and NathanH5416 the prophetH5030 have anointedH4886 him kingH4428 in GihonH1521; and they are comeH5927 up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heardH8085. 46And alsoH1571 SolomonH8010 sitteth on the throneH3678 of the kingdom. 47And moreover the king’sH4428 servantsH5650 cameH935 to blessH1288 our lordH113 kingH4428 DavidH1732, sayingH559, Thy GodH430 makeH1431 the nameH8034 of SolomonH8010 betterH3190 than thy nameH8034, and makeH1431 his throneH3678 greaterH1431 than thy throneH3678: and the kingH4428 bowedH7812 himself upon the bedH4904. 48And alsoH1571 thusH3602 saidH559 the kingH4428, BlessedH1288 be Jehovah, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478, who hath givenH5414 oneH834 to sitH3427 on my throneH3678 this dayH3117, mine eyesH5869 even seeingH7200 it.
49And all the guests of AdonijahH138 were afraid, and roseH6965 up, and went every manH376 his wayH1870. 50And AdonijahH138 fearedH3372 because of SolomonH8010; and he aroseH6965, and went, and caught holdH2388 on the hornsH7161 of the altarH4196. 51And it was toldH5046 SolomonH8010, sayingH559, Behold, AdonijahH138 feareth kingH4428 SolomonH8010; for, lo, he hath laid holdH270 on the hornsH7161 of the altarH4196, sayingH559, Let kingH4428 SolomonH8010 swearH7650 unto me first that he will not slay his servantH5650 with the swordH2719. 52And SolomonH8010 saidH559, If he shall show himself a worthy man, there shall not a hairH8185 of him fallH5307 to the earthH776; but if wickednessH7451 beH1961 foundH4672 in him, he shall dieH4191. 53So kingH4428 SolomonH8010 sentH7971, and they broughtH935 him downH3381 from the altarH4196. And he cameH935 and did obeisance to kingH4428 SolomonH8010; and SolomonH8010 saidH559 unto him, GoH935 to thy houseH1004.
