Luke 20
American Standard Version
1And it cameG1096 to passG1096, on oneG1520 of the daysG2250, as he was teachingG1321 the peopleG2992 in the temple, and preaching the gospel, there cameG1096 upon him the chiefG749 priestsG749 and the scribesG1122 with the eldersG4245; 2and they spake, sayingG3004 unto him, TellG3004 us: By what authorityG1849 doest thou these thingsG3778? or who isG1510 he that gaveG1325 thee this authorityG1849? 3And he answeredG611 and saidG3004 unto them, I alsoG2532 will askG2065 you a question; and tellG3004 me: 4The baptismG908 of JohnG2491, wasG1510 it from heavenG3772, or from menG444? 5And they reasoned with themselves, sayingG3004, If we shall sayG3004, From heavenG3772; he will sayG3004, WhyG5101 did ye not believeG4100 him? 6But if we shall sayG3004, From menG444; all the peopleG2992 will stone us: for they areG1510 persuadedG3982 that JohnG2491 wasG1510 a prophetG4396. 7And they answeredG611, that they knew not whence it was. 8And JesusG2424 saidG3004 unto them, Neither tellG3004 I you by what authorityG1849 I do these thingsG3778.
9And he beganG757 to speakG3004 unto the peopleG2992 this parableG3850: A manG444 plantedG5452 a vineyardG290, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long timeG5550. 10And at the seasonG2540 he sentG649 unto the husbandmen a servantG1401, that they should giveG1325 him of the fruitG2590 of the vineyardG290: but the husbandmen beatG1194 him, and sentG649 him awayG1821 emptyG2756. 11And he sentG3992 yet another servantG1401: and him alsoG2532 they beatG1194, and handled him shamefully, and sentG3992 him awayG1821 emptyG2756. 12And he sentG3992 yet a thirdG5154: and him alsoG2532 they woundedG5135, and castG1544 him forth. 13And the lordG2962 of the vineyardG290 saidG3004, What shall I do? I will sendG3992 my belovedG27 sonG5207; it may be they will reverence him. 14But when the husbandmen sawG3708 him, they reasonedG1260 oneG240 with another, sayingG3004, This isG1510 the heirG2818; let us killG615 him, that the inheritanceG2817 may beG1510 ours. 15And they castG1544 him forth out of the vineyardG290, and killedG615 him. What thereforeG3767 will the lordG2962 of the vineyardG290 do unto them? 16He will comeG2064 and destroyG622 these husbandmen, and will giveG1325 the vineyardG290 unto othersG243. And when they heardG191 it, they saidG3004, God forbid. 17But he lookedG1689 upon them, and saidG3004, What thenG3767 isG1510 this that isG1510 writtenG1125,
18Every oneG3739 that falleth on that stoneG3037 shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fallG4098, it will scatter him as dust.
19And the scribesG1122 and the chiefG749 priestsG749 soughtG2212 to lay handsG5495 on him in that very hourG5610; and they fearedG5399 the peopleG2992: for they perceived that he spake this parableG3850 against them. 20And they watchedG3906 him, and sentG649 forthG649 spies, who feigned themselves to beG1510 righteousG1342, that they might take holdG1949 of his speechG3056, soG2443 as to deliverG3860 him up to the ruleG746 and to the authorityG1849 of the governorG2232. 21And they askedG1905 him, sayingG3004, TeacherG1320, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightlyG3723, and acceptest not the person of any, but of a truthG225 teachest the wayG3598 of GodG2316: 22Is it lawfulG1832 for us to giveG1325 tribute unto Cæsar, or not? 23But he perceived their craftinessG3834, and saidG3004 unto them, 24ShowG1166 me a denariusG1220. Whose imageG1504 and superscription hath it? And they saidG3004, Cæsar’s. 25And he saidG3004 unto them, Then renderG591 unto Cæsar the things that are Cæsar’s, and unto GodG2316 the things that are God’s. 26And they were not ableG2480 to take holdG1949 of the saying before the peopleG2992: and they marvelled at his answerG612, and held their peace.
27And there cameG4334 to him certainG5100 of the SadduceesG4523, they that say that there isG1510 no resurrectionG386; 28and they asked him, sayingG3004, TeacherG1320, MosesG3475 wroteG1125 unto us, that if a man’s brotherG80 dieG599, having a wifeG1135, and he beG1510 childlessG815, his brotherG80 should takeG2983 the wifeG1135, and raiseG1817 up seedG4690 unto his brotherG80. 29There wereG1510 thereforeG3767 sevenG2033 brethren: and the firstG4413 tookG2983 a wifeG1135, and diedG599 childlessG815; 30and the secondG1208: 31and the thirdG5154 tookG2983 her; and likewiseG5615 the sevenG2033 alsoG2532 leftG2641 no childrenG5043, and diedG599. 32Afterward the womanG1135 alsoG2532 diedG599. 33In the resurrectionG386 thereforeG3767 whose wifeG1135 of them shall she be? for the sevenG2033 had her to wifeG1135. 34And JesusG2424 saidG3004 unto them, The sonsG5207 of this world marryG1060, and are given in marriage: 35but they that are accounted worthyG2661 to attain to that world, and the resurrectionG386 from the deadG3498, neither marryG1060, nor are given in marriage: 36for neither can they dieG599 any moreG2089: for they areG1510 equal unto the angels; and areG1510 sonsG5207 of GodG2316, beingG1510 sonsG5207 of the resurrectionG386. 37But that the deadG3498 are raisedG1453, evenG2532 MosesG3475 showed, in the place concerning the BushG942, whenG5613 he calleth the LordG2962 the GodG2316 of AbrahamG11, and the GodG2316 of IsaacG2464, and the GodG2316 of JacobG2384. 38NowG1161 he isG1510 not the GodG2316 of the deadG3498, but of the livingG2198: for all liveG2198 unto him. 39And certainG5100 of the scribesG1122 answeringG611 saidG3004, TeacherG1320, thou hast wellG2573 saidG3004. 40For they durst not any more askG1905 him any questionG1905.
41And he saidG3004 unto them, HowG4459 sayG3004 they that the ChristG5547 isG1510 David’s sonG5207? 42For DavidG1138 himself saith in the bookG976 of PsalmsG5568,
44DavidG1138 thereforeG3767 calleth him LordG2962, and howG4459 isG1510 he his sonG5207?
45And in the hearingG191 of all the peopleG2992 he saidG3004 unto his disciplesG3101, 46BewareG4337 of the scribesG1122, who desireG2309 to walkG4043 in long robesG4749, and loveG5368 salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seatsG4410 in the synagoguesG4864, and chief places at feasts; 47who devourG2719 widows’G5503 housesG3614, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receiveG2983 greater condemnationG2917.
