Pharisees and Sadducees Test Jesus

2But He repliedἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisG611to them, “When it is eveningὀψίαςopsiasG3798,you sayλέγετε·legeteG3004, ‘It will befairG2105weatherG2105,for the skyοὐρανός.ouranosG3772is redπυρράζειpurrazeiG4449.’

3And in the morningπρωΐ·prōiG4404, ‘There will bea stormχειμών,cheimōnG5494todayσήμερονsēmeronG4594,for the skyοὐρανός.ouranosG3772is redπυρράζειpurrazeiG4449and threateningστυγνάζωνstugnazōnG4768.’You knowγινώσκετεginōsketeG1097howG1097to discernδιακρίνειν,diakrineinG1252theappearanceπρόσωπονprosōponG4383of the skyοὐρανοῦouranouG3772,but are you unableοὐ δύνασθε;ou dunastheG1410 G3756to discernthe signsσημεῖαsēmeiaG4592of the timesκαιρῶνkairōnG2540?

4An evilπονηρὰponēraG4190and adulterousμοιχαλὶςmoichalisG3428generationγενεὰgeneaG1074wantsἐπιζητεῖ·epizēteiG1934asignσημεῖονsēmeionG4592; and so asignσημεῖονsēmeionG4592will not be givenδοθήσεταιdothēsetaiG1325to it, exceptG1508the signσημεῖονsēmeionG4592of JonahἸωνᾶIōnaG2495.”And He leftκαταλιπὼνkatalipōnG2641them and wentG565awayἀπῆλθεν.¶apēlthenG565.

5And the disciplesμαθηταὶmathētaiG3101cameἐλθόντεςelthontesG2064to the otherπέρανperanG4008sideG4008of the sea,but they had forgottenἐπελάθοντοepelathontoG1950to bringλαβεῖν.¶labeinG2983anybreadἄρτουςartousG740.

6And JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidG3004to them,“WatchὁρᾶτεhorateG3708outG3708andbewareπροσέχετεprosecheteG4337of theleavenζύμηςzumēsG2219of thePhariseesΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnG5330and SadduceesΣαδδουκαίων.SaddoukaiōnG4523.”

7They began to discussδιελογίζοντοdielogizontoG1260thisamongἐνenG1722themselvesἑαυτοῖςhe'autoisG1438,sayingλέγοντεςlegontesG3004, “He said thatbecauseὅτιhotiG3754we did not bringἐλάβομεν.¶elabomenG2983anybreadἄρτουςartousG740.”

8But JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424,awareΓνοὺςGnousG1097of this,saidG3004, “You menG3640ofG3640littleὀλιγόπιστοι,oligopistoiG3640faithG3640,whyτίtiG5101are you discussingδιαλογίζεσθεdialogizestheG1260amongἐνenG1722yourselvesἑαυτοῖς,he'autoisG1438the factthat you haveἔχετε;echeteG2192noοὐκoukG3756breadἄρτουςartousG740?

9Do you not yetοὔπωoupōG3768understandνοεῖτεnoeiteG3539norοὐδὲoudeG3761rememberμνημονεύετεmnēmoneueteG3421the fiveπέντεpenteG4002loavesἄρτουςartousG740of the fiveπεντακισχιλίωνpentakischiliōnG4000thousandG4000,and howπόσουςposousG4214manyG4214basketsκοφίνουςkophinousG2894you pickedἐλάβετε;elabeteG2983up?

11HowπῶςpōsG4459is it thatyou do not understandνοεῖτεnoeiteG3539that I did not speakG3004to you aboutπερὶperiG4012breadἄρτωνartōnG740? ButbewareπροσέχετεprosecheteG4337of theleavenζύμηςzumēsG2219of thePhariseesΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnG5330and SadduceesΣαδδουκαίων.¶SaddoukaiōnG4523.”

12ThenΤότεToteG5119they understoodσυνῆκανsunēkanG4920that He did not sayG3004to bewareπροσέχεινprosecheinG4337of theleavenζύμηςzumēsG2219of breadἄρτωνartōnG740,but of the teachingδιδαχῆςdidachēsG1322of thePhariseesΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnG5330and SadduceesΣαδδουκαίων.¶SaddoukaiōnG4523.

16SimonΣίμωνSimōnG4613PeterΠέτροςPetrosG4074answeredἈποκριθεὶςApokritheisG611, “You are theChristχριστὸςchristosG5547,the SonυἱὸςhuiosG5207ofthe livingζῶντος.¶zōntosG2198GodθεοῦtheouG2316.”

17And JesusἸησοῦςIēsousG2424saidG3004to him,“BlessedμακάριοςmakariosG3107are you,SimonΣίμωνSimōnG4613BarjonaΒαριωνᾶ,BariōnaG920,becauseὅτιhotiG3754fleshσὰρξsarxG4561and bloodαἷμαhaimaG129did not revealἀπεκάλυψένapekalupsenG601thisto you, but My FatherπατήρpatērG3962whoG3588is in heavenοὐρανοῖς.ouranoisG3772.

18And I alsoG2532sayλέγωlegōG3004to you that you arePeterΠέτροςPetrosG4074,and upon thisταύτῃtautēG3778rockπέτρᾳpetraG4073I will buildοἰκοδομήσωoikodomēsōG3618My churchἐκκλησίαν,ekklēsianG1577;and the gatesπύλαιpulaiG4439ofHadesᾅδουhadouG86will not overpowerκατισχύσουσινkatischusousinG2729it.

19I will giveδώσωdōsōG1325youthe keysκλεῖδαςkleidasG2807of the kingdomβασιλείαςbasileiasG932of heavenοὐρανῶν,ouranōnG3772; andwhateverὃ ἐὰνho eanG3739 G1437youbindδήσῃςdēsēsG1210on earthγῆς,gēsG1093shall have been boundδεδεμένονdedemenonG1210in heavenοὐρανοῖς,ouranoisG3772,and whateverὃ ἐὰνho eanG3739 G1437youlooseλύσῃςlusēsG3089on earthγῆς,gēsG1093shall have been loosedλελυμένονlelumenonG3089in heavenοὐρανοῖς.¶ouranoisG3772.”

22And yetPeterΠέτροςPetrosG4074tookG4355Him asideG4355and beganἤρξατοērxatoG757to rebukeἐπιτιμᾶνepitimanG2008Him, sayingλέγων·legōnG3004, “GodG2436forbidG2436it, Lordκύριε·kurieG2962!Thisτοῦτο.¶toutoG3778shall neverοὐ μὴou mēG3756 G3361happenἔσταιestaiG1510to You!”

23But He turnedστραφεὶςstrapheisG4762and saidG3004to PeterΠέτρῳ·PetrōG4074,“GetὕπαγεhupageG5217behindὀπίσωopisōG3694Me,Satanσατανᾶ,satanaG4567!You are a stumblingσκάνδαλονskandalonG4625blockG4625to Me; for you are not settingG5426your mindG5426onG5426God’sθεοῦtheouG2316purposes, but men’sἀνθρώπων.¶anthrōpōnG444.”

25Forwhoeverὃς ἐὰνhos eanG3739 G1437wantsθέλῃthelēG2309to saveσῶσαι,sōsaiG4982hislifeψυχὴνpsuchēnG5590will loseἀπολέσειapoleseiG622it; but whoeverὃς ἂνhos anG3739 G302losesἀπολέσῃapolesēG622hislifeψυχὴνpsuchēnG5590for My sakeἕνεκενhenekenG1752will findεὑρήσειheurēseiG2147it.

26For whatΤίTiG5101goodG5623will it doG5623a personἄνθρωπος,anthrōposG444ifἐὰνeanG1437he gainsκερδήσῃ,kerdēsēG2770the wholeὅλονholonG3650worldκόσμονkosmonG2889, butforfeitsζημιωθῇ;zēmiōthēaG2210his soulψυχὴνpsuchēnG5590?OrἢēG2228whatτίtiG5101will a personἄνθρωποςanthrōposG444giveδώσειdōseiG1325in exchangeἀντάλλαγμαantallagmaG465for his soulψυχῆςpsuchēsG5590?

27For theSonυἱὸςhuiosG5207of ManἀνθρώπουanthrōpouG444isG3195goingG3195toG3195comeἔρχεσθαιerchesthaiG2064in the gloryδόξῃdoxēG1391of His FatherπατρὸςpatrosG3962with His angelsἀγγέλωνangelōnG32, andwill thenτότεtoteG5119repayἀποδώσειapodōseiG591everyG1538personG1538accordingκατὰkataG2596to hisdeedsπρᾶξινpraxinG4234.
