Jesus before Pilate

11EarlyG2117 in the morningG4404 the chiefG749 priestsG749 with the eldersG4245 and scribesG1122 and the wholeG3650 23CouncilG4892, immediatelyG2117 heldG4160 a consultationG4824; and bindingG1210 JesusG2424, they ledG667 Him awayG667 and deliveredG3860 Him to PilateG4091. 24PilateG4091 questionedG1905 Him, “Are You the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” And He answeredG611 him, “It is as you sayG3004.” 3The chiefG749 priestsG749 began to accuseG2723 Him 5harshlyG4183. 4ThenG2532 PilateG4091 questionedG1905 Him againG3825, sayingG3004, “Do You not answerG611? SeeG2396 howG4214 manyG4214 chargesG2723 they bringG2723 againstG2723 You!” 5But JesusG2424 6madeG611 noG3762G3765 furtherG3765 answerG611; soG5620 PilateG4091 was amazedG2296.

67NowG1161 at the feastG1859 he used to releaseG630 for them any oneG1520 prisonerG1198 whomG3739 they requestedG3868. 7The man namedG3004 BarabbasG912 had beenG1510 imprisonedG1210 with the insurrectionistsG4714 whoG3748 had committedG4160 murderG5408 in the insurrectionG4714. 8The crowdG3793 wentG305 up and beganG757 askingG154 him to do as he had been accustomed to doG4160 for them. 9PilateG4091 answeredG611 them, sayingG3004, “Do you wantG2309 me to releaseG630 for you the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” 10For he was awareG1097 that the chiefG749 priestsG749 had handedG3860 Him over becauseG1223 of envyG5355. 11But the chiefG749 priestsG749 stirredG383 up the crowdG3793 8to ask him to releaseG630 BarabbasG912 for them insteadG3123. 12AnsweringG611 againG3825, PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “ThenG3767 whatG5101 shall I doG4160 with Him whomG3739 you callG3004 the KingG935 of the JewsG2453?” 13They shoutedG2896 9backG3825, “CrucifyG4717 Him!” 14But PilateG4091 saidG3004 to them, “WhyG1063, whatG5101 evilG2556 has He doneG4160?” But they shoutedG2896 allG4057 the moreG4057, “CrucifyG4717 Him!” 15WishingG1014 to satisfyG4160G2425 the crowdG3793, PilateG4091 releasedG630 BarabbasG912 for them, and after having JesusG2424 10scourgedG5417, he handedG3860 Him over to be crucifiedG4717.

Jesus Is Mocked

1611The soldiersG4757 tookG520 Him awayG520 into 12the 13palaceG833 (that is, the PraetoriumG4232), and they calledG4779 togetherG4779 the wholeG3650 Roman 1415cohortG4686. 17They dressedG1737 Him up in purpleG4209, and after twistingG4120 a crownG4735 of thornsG174, they putG4060 it on Him; 18and they beganG757 to acclaimG782 Him, “HailG5463, KingG935 of the JewsG2453!” 19They kept beatingG5180 His headG2776 with a 16reedG2563, and spittingG1716 on Him, and kneelingG1119G5087 and bowingG4352 beforeG4352 Him. 20AfterG3753 they had mockedG1702 Him, they tookG1562 the purpleG4209 robeG4209 offG1562 Him and putG1746 His own garmentsG2440 on Him. And they ledG1806 Him out to crucifyG4717 Him.

2117They pressedG29 into serviceG29 a passer-byG3855 comingG2064 from the countryG68, SimonG4613 of CyreneG2956 (the fatherG3962 of AlexanderG223 and 18RufusG4504), to bearG142 His crossG4716.

The Crucifixion

2219ThenG2532 they broughtG5342 Him to the placeG5117 20GolgothaG1115, whichG3739 is translatedG3177, PlaceG5117 of a SkullG2898. 23They tried to giveG1325 Him 21wineG3631 mixedG4669 with myrrhG4669; but He did not takeG2983 it. 24And they crucifiedG4717 Him, and 22dividedG1266 up His garmentsG2440 amongG1266 themselves, castingG906 23lotsG2819 for them to decide 24whatG5101 eachG5101 manG5100 should takeG142. 25It was the 2526thirdG5154 hourG5610 27whenG2532 they crucifiedG4717 Him. 26The inscriptionG1923 of the chargeG156 againstG156 Him 28readG1924, “29THE KINGG935 OF THE JEWSG2453.”

27They crucifiedG4717 twoG1417 robbersG3027 with Him, oneG1520 on His rightG1188 and oneG1520 on His leftG2176. 28[30And the ScriptureG1124 was fulfilledG4137 which saysG3004, “And He was numberedG3049 with transgressorsG459.”] 29ThoseG3588 passingG3899 by were 31hurlingG987 abuseG987 at Him, 32waggingG2795 their headsG2776, and sayingG3004, “HaG3758! You who are going to 33destroyG2647 the templeG3485 and rebuildG3618 it in threeG5140 daysG2250, 30saveG4982 YourselfG4572, and comeG2597 downG2597 from the crossG4716!” 31In the sameG3668 wayG3668 the chiefG749 priestsG749 alsoG2532, along with the scribesG1122, were mockingG1702 Him amongG4314 themselvesG240 and sayingG3004, “34He savedG4982 othersG243; 35He cannotG1410G3756 saveG4982 HimselfG1438. 32Let this ChristG5547, 36the KingG935 of IsraelG2474, nowG3568 comeG2597 downG2597 from the crossG4716, soG2443 that we may seeG3708 and believeG4100!” 37ThoseG3588 who were crucifiedG4957 with Him were alsoG2532 insultingG3679 Him.

3338When the 3940sixthG1623 hourG5610 cameG1096, darknessG4655 41fellG1096 overG1909 the wholeG3650 landG1093 untilG2193 the 4243ninthG1729 hourG5610. 34At the 44ninthG1729 hourG5610 JesusG2424 criedG994 out with a loudG3173 voiceG5456, “45EloiG1682, EloiG1682, lamaG2982 sabachthaniG4518?” whichG3739 is translatedG3177, “My GodG2316, My GodG2316, whyG1519G5101 have You forsakenG1459 Me?” 35When someG5100 of the bystandersG3936 heardG191 it, they began sayingG3004, “BeholdG2396, He is callingG5455 for ElijahG2243.” 36SomeoneG5100 ranG5143 and filledG1072 a spongeG4699 with sourG3690 wineG3690, putG4060 it on a reedG2563, and gaveG4222 Him a drinkG4222, sayingG3004, “46LetG863 us seeG3708 whetherG1487 ElijahG2243 will comeG2064 to takeG2507 Him downG2507.” 3747And JesusG2424 utteredG863 a loudG3173 cryG5456, and breathedG1606 His lastG1606. 3848And the veilG2665 of the templeG3485 was tornG4977 in twoG1417 from topG509 to bottomG2736. 3949When the centurionG2760, who was standingG3936 50rightG1727 in frontG1727 of Him, sawG3708 51the wayG3779 He breathedG1606 His lastG1606, he saidG3004, “TrulyG230 thisG3778 manG444 was 52the SonG5207 of GodG2316!”

4053There were alsoG2532 some womenG1135 lookingG2334 on from a distanceG3113, amongG1722 whomG3739 were MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094, and MaryG3137 the motherG3384 of 54JamesG2385 55the 56LessG3398 and JosesG2500, and 57SalomeG4539. 41WhenG3753 He was in GalileeG1056, they used to followG190 Him and 5859ministerG1247 to Him; and there were manyG4183 otherG243 womenG243 who cameG4872 up with Him to JerusalemG2414.

Jesus Is Buried

4260When eveningG3798 had alreadyG2235 comeG1096, becauseG1893 it was 61the preparationG3904 dayG3904, that is, the dayG4315 beforeG4315 the SabbathG4315, 43JosephG2501 of ArimatheaG707 cameG2064, a 62prominentG2158 memberG1010 of the CouncilG1010, whoG3739 himselfG846 was 63waitingG4327 for the kingdomG932 of GodG2316; and he 64gatheredG5111 up courageG5111 and wentG1525 in beforeG4314 PilateG4091, and askedG154 for the bodyG4983 of JesusG2424. 44PilateG4091 wonderedG2296 ifG1487 He was deadG2348 by thisG2235 timeG2235, and summoningG4341 the centurionG2760, he questionedG1905 him as to whetherG1487 He was alreadyG2235 deadG599. 45And ascertainingG1097 this from 65the centurionG2760, he grantedG1433 the bodyG4430 to JosephG2501. 46Joseph boughtG59 a linenG4616 clothG4616, tookG2507 Him downG2507, wrappedG1750 Him in the linenG4616 clothG4616 and laidG2698 Him in a tombG3418 whichG3739 had beenG1510 hewnG2998 out in the rockG4073; and he rolledG4351 a stoneG3037 againstG1909 the entranceG2374 of the tombG3419. 4766MaryG3137 MagdaleneG3094 and MaryG3137 the mother of JosesG2500 were lookingG2334 on to see whereG4226 He was laidG5087.
