Mark 7

Followers of Tradition

11The PhariseesG5330 and someG5100 of the scribesG1122 gatheredG4863 aroundG4314 Him when they had comeG2064 2from JerusalemG2414, 2and had seenG3708 that someG5100 of His disciplesG3101 were eatingG2068 their breadG740 with 3impureG2839 handsG5495, that is, unwashedG449. 3(For the PhariseesG5330 and allG3956 the JewsG2453 do not eatG2068 unlessG1437G3361 they 4carefullyG4435 washG3538 their handsG5495, thus observingG2902 the 5traditionsG3862 of the eldersG4245; 4and when they come from the marketG58 placeG58, they do not eatG2068 unlessG1437G3361 they 6cleanseG4472 themselves; and there are manyG4183 otherG243 thingsG4183 whichG3739 they have receivedG3880 in order to observeG2902, such as the 7washingG909 of 8cupsG4221 and pitchersG3582 and copperG5473 potsG5473.) 5The PhariseesG5330 and the scribesG1122 askedG1905 Him, “WhyG1223G5101 do Your disciplesG3101 not walkG4043 accordingG2596 to the 9traditionG3862 of the eldersG4245, but eatG2068 their breadG740 with 10impureG2839 handsG5495?” 6And He saidG3004 to them, “RightlyG2573 did IsaiahG2268 prophesyG4395 of you hypocritesG5273, as it is writtenG1125: ‘11ThisG3778 peopleG2992 honorsG5091 Me with their lipsG5491, But their heartG2588 is farG4206 awayG568G4206 from Me.712But in vainG3155 do they worshipG4576 Me, TeachingG1321 as doctrinesG1319 the preceptsG1778 of menG444.’ 8NeglectingG863 the commandmentG1785 of GodG2316, you holdG2902 to the 13traditionG3862 of menG444.”

9He was alsoG2532 sayingG3004 to them, “You are expertsG2573 at settingG114 asideG114 the commandmentG1785 of GodG2316 in orderG2443 to keepG5083 your 14traditionG3862. 10For MosesG3475 saidG3004, ‘15HonorG5091 your fatherG3962 and your motherG3384’; and, ‘16He who speaksG2551 evilG2551 of fatherG3962 orG2228 motherG3384, is to 17be putG5053 to deathG2288’; 11but you sayG3004, ‘IfG1437 a manG444 saysG3004 to his fatherG3962 orG2228 his motherG3384, whateverG3739G1437 I haveG1473 that would helpG5623 you is 18CorbanG2878 (that is to say, 19givenG1435 to God),’ 12you noG3765 longerG3765 permitG863 him to doG4160 anythingG3762 for his fatherG3962 orG2228 his motherG3384; 13thus invalidatingG208 the wordG3056 of GodG2316 by your 20traditionG3862 whichG3739 you have handedG3860 downG3860; and you doG4160 manyG4183 thingsG4183 suchG3946 as that.”

The Heart of Man

14After He calledG4341 the crowdG3793 to Him againG3825, He began sayingG3004 to them, “ListenG191 to Me, allG3956 of you, and understandG4920: 15there is nothingG3762 outsideG1855 the manG444 which canG1410 defileG2840 him if it goesG1531 into him; but the things which proceedG1607 out of the manG444 are what defileG2840 the manG444. 16[21IfG1487 anyoneG5100 hasG2192 earsG3775 to hearG191, let him hearG191.”]

17WhenG3753 He had leftG575 the crowdG3793 and enteredG1525 22the houseG3624, 23His disciplesG3101 questionedG1905 Him about the parableG3850. 18And He saidG3004 to them, “Are you soG3779 lackingG801 in understandingG801 alsoG2532? Do you not understandG3539 that whateverG3956 goesG1531 into the manG444 from outsideG1855 cannotG1410G3756 defileG2840 him, 19becauseG3754 it does not goG1531 into his heartG2588, but into his stomachG2836, and 24is eliminatedG1519G856G1607?” (Thus He declaredG2511 25allG3956 foodsG1033 26cleanG2511.) 20And He was sayingG3004, “27That which proceedsG1607 out of the manG444, that is what defilesG2840 the manG444. 21For from withinG2081, out of the heartG2588 of menG444, proceedG1607 the evilG2556 thoughtsG1261, 28fornicationsG4202, theftsG2829, murdersG5408, adulteriesG3430, 22deedsG4124 of covetingG4124 and wickednessG4189, as well as deceitG1388, sensualityG766, 2930envyG3788G4190, slanderG988, 31prideG5243 and foolishnessG877. 23AllG3956 theseG3778 evilG4190 thingsG4190 proceedG1607 from withinG2081 and defileG2840 the manG444.”

The Syrophoenician Woman

2432Jesus gotG450 up and wentG565 awayG565 from thereG1564 to the regionG3725 of 33TyreG518434. And when He had enteredG1525 a houseG3614, He wantedG2309 noG3762 oneG3762 to knowG1097 of it; 35yetG2532 He couldG1410 not escapeG2990 noticeG2990. 25But after hearingG191 of Him, a womanG1135 whoseG3739 littleG2365 daughterG2365 hadG2192 an uncleanG169 spiritG4151 immediatelyG2117 cameG2064 and fellG4363 at His feetG4228. 26NowG1161 the womanG1135 was a 36GentileG1674, of the SyrophoenicianG4949 raceG1085. And she kept askingG2065 Him to castG1544 the demonG1140 out of her daughterG2364. 27And He was sayingG3004 to her, “LetG863 the childrenG5043 be satisfiedG5526 firstG4413, for it is not 37goodG2570 to takeG2983 the children’sG5043 breadG740 and throwG906 it to the dogsG2952.” 28But she answeredG611 and saidG3004 to Him, “YesG3483, LordG2962, but evenG2532 the dogsG2952 underG5270 the tableG5132 feedG2068 on the children’sG3813 crumbsG5589.” 29And He saidG3004 to her, “BecauseG1223 of thisG3778 38answerG3056 goG5217; the demonG1140 has goneG1831 out of your daughterG2364.” 30And goingG565 backG565 to her homeG3624, she foundG2147 the childG3813 39lyingG906 on the bedG2825, the demonG1140 having leftG1831.

3140AgainG3825 He wentG1831 out from the regionG3725 of 41TyreG5184, and cameG2064 throughG1223 SidonG4605 to 42the SeaG2281 of GalileeG1056, withinG303G3319 the regionG3725 of 43DecapolisG1179. 32They broughtG5342 to Him oneG2974 whoG2974 was deafG2974 and spokeG3424 with difficultyG3424, and they imploredG3870 Him to 44layG2007 His handG5495 on him. 3345Jesus tookG618 him asideG618 from the crowdG3793, by himselfG2398, and putG906 His fingersG1147 into his earsG3775, and after 46spittingG4429, He touchedG681 his tongueG1100 with the saliva; 34and lookingG308 up to heavenG3772 with a deepG4727 47sighG4727, He saidG3004 to him, “EphphathaG2188!” that is, “Be openedG1272!” 35And his earsG189 were openedG455, and the 48impedimentG1199 of his tongueG1100 49was removedG3089, and he began speakingG2980 plainlyG3723. 36And 50He gaveG1291 them ordersG1291 not to tellG3004 anyoneG3367; but the moreG3745 He orderedG1291 them, the moreG3123 widelyG4053 they 51continued to proclaimG2784 it. 37They were utterlyG5249 astonishedG1605, sayingG3004, “He has doneG4160 allG3956 thingsG3956 wellG2573; He makesG4160 evenG2532 the deafG2974 to hearG191 and the muteG216 to speakG2980.”
