Genesis 34
Darby Bible
1And DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of LeahH3812, whom she had borneH3205 to JacobH3290, wentH3318 out to seeH7200 the daughtersH1323 of the landH776. 2And when ShechemH7927, the sonH1121 of HamorH2544 the HiviteH2340, the princeH5387 of the country, sawH7200 her, he tookH3947 her, and layH7901 with her, and humbled her. 3And his soulH5315 fastened on DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of JacobH3290, and he lovedH157 the maiden, and spokeH1696 consolingly to the maiden. 4And ShechemH7927 spoke to his fatherH1 HamorH2544, sayingH559, TakeH3947 me this girlH3207 as wifeH802. 5And JacobH3290 heardH8085 that he had defiledH2930 DinahH1783 his daughterH1323; but his sonsH1121 wereH1961 with his cattle in the fieldsH7704, and JacobH3290 said nothing until they cameH935. 6And HamorH2544 the fatherH1 of ShechemH7927 cameH3318 out to JacobH3290, to speakH1696 to him. 7And the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935 from the fieldsH7704 when they heardH8085 [it]; and the menH376 were grieved, and they were veryH3966 angryH2734, because he had wrought what was disgracefulH5039 in IsraelH3478, in lyingH7901 with Jacob's daughterH1323, which thing ought not to be done. 8And HamorH2544 spokeH1696 to them, sayingH559, My sonH1121 Shechem's soulH5315 cleaves to your daughterH1323: I pray you, giveH5414 her to him as wifeH802. 9And makeH5414 marriages with us: giveH5414 your daughtersH1323 to us, and takeH3947 our daughtersH1323 to you. 10And dwellH3427 with us, and the landH776 shall beH1961 before you: dwellH3427 and trade in it, and get yourselves possessionsH270 in it. 11And ShechemH7927 saidH559 to her fatherH1 and to her brethren, Let me findH4672 favour in your eyesH5869; and what ye shall sayH559 to me I will giveH5414. 12Impose on me veryH3966 muchH7235 as dowry and giftH4976, and I will giveH5414 according as ye shall sayH559 to me; but giveH5414 me the maiden as wifeH802. 13And the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 answeredH6030 ShechemH7927 and HamorH2544 his fatherH1 deceitfully, and spokeH1696 — because he had defiledH2930 DinahH1783 their sisterH269 — 14and saidH559 to them, We cannot do this, to giveH5414 our sisterH269 to oneH376 that is uncircumcised; for that [were] a reproachH2781 to us. 15But onlyH389 in this will we consent to you, if ye will beH1961 as we, that every maleH2145 of you beH1961 circumcisedH4135; 16then will we giveH5414 our daughtersH1323 to you, and takeH3947 your daughtersH1323 to us, and we will dwellH3427 with you, and beH1961 oneH259 peopleH5971. 17But if ye do not hearken to us, to be circumcisedH4135, then will we takeH3947 our daughterH1323 and goH1980 away. 18And their wordsH1697 were goodH3190 in the eyesH5869 of HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927, Hamor's sonH1121. 19And the youthH5288 did not delayH309 to do this, because he had delightH2654 in Jacob's daughterH1323. And he was honourable above all in the houseH1004 of his fatherH1. 20And HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 cameH935 to the gateH8179 of their cityH5892, and spokeH1696 to the menH376 of their cityH5892, sayingH559, 21These menH376 are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwellH3427 in the landH776, and trade in it. And the landH776 — behold, it is of wideH7342 extent before them. We will takeH3947 their daughtersH1323 as wivesH802, and giveH5414 them our daughtersH1323. 22But onlyH389 in this will the menH376 consent to us to dwellH3427 with us, to beH1961 oneH259 peopleH5971 — if every maleH2145 among us beH1961 circumcisedH4135, just as they are circumcisedH4135. 23Their cattleH929, and their possessions, and every beast of theirs, shall they not be ours? onlyH389 let us consent to them, and they will dwellH3427 with us. 24And all that wentH3318 out at the gateH8179 of his cityH5892 hearkened to HamorH2544 and to ShechemH7927 his sonH1121; and every maleH2145 was circumcisedH4135 — all that wentH3318 out at the gateH8179 of his cityH5892. 25And it cameH935 to pass on the thirdH7992 dayH3117, when they wereH1961 sore, that twoH8147 of the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290, SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Dinah's brethren, tookH3947 each his swordH2719, and cameH935 upon the cityH5892 boldly, and slewH2026 all the malesH2145. 26And HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 they slewH2026 with the edge of the swordH2719; and tookH3947 DinahH1783 out of Shechem's houseH1004; and wentH3318 out. 27The sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935 upon the slainH2491, and plunderedH962 the cityH5892, because they had defiledH2930 their sisterH269. 28Their sheepH6629, and their oxenH1241, and their asses, and what [was] in the cityH5892, and what [was] in the fieldH7704 they tookH3947; 29and all their goods, and all their littleH2945 onesH2945, and their wivesH802 tookH7617 they captiveH7617, and plunderedH962 them, and all that was in the housesH1004. 30And JacobH3290 saidH559 to SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Ye have troubledH5916 me, in that ye make me odiousH887 among the inhabitantsH3427 of the landH776 — among the CanaanitesH3669 and the Perizzites; and I am few men in numberH4557, and they will gatherH622 themselves against me and smite me, and I shall be destroyedH8045, I and my houseH1004. 31And they saidH559, Should people deal with our sisterH269 as with a harlot?
